Speed Limits map

Hey all,

So I just stumbled upon this map that I figured could be useful for us scooterists (quicker than Street View at any rate). It shows the speed limits in mph for all major roads in a given area. I haven't really explored its functionality and I can't fully attest to its accuracy, but it looks like it could be a very useful tool:

It's rather incomplete for my area. Just several major roads are colored, but seemingly at random, and plenty of majorer ones aren't.

It's completely useless for my area - Sun City, AZ and environs. Shows nothing but greyed out streets and roads, even the major ones, but one small street is colored green indicating traffic lights! Big deal.

Sorry folks, I guess it's not that great if you aren't in a larger metropolitan area. As I said, I hadn't really taken the time to explore it, just took a quick glance at my city and it looked like it covered all the major roads. So maybe only helpful if you're in a fairly big city I guess.

Yeah... Kansas City just isn't big enough... only three major highways out of the 30 something are labelled. will be interesting to see it pan out in the future though... it looks like it may be built on the same technology as apple's maps in iOS... so I'm not going to hold my breath. Google Earth already provides some fairly solid speed information on roads. You can even street view most roads to get signage confirmation.

If you can hear your GPS it should buzz you when you exceed speed limit. Mine is pretty obnoxious about it

I've just turned that feature off......

Incomplete or not, as it is in my area as well, it just shows the major 'commuter roads' I'd think it is somewhat helpful to those new to, or unfamiliar to an area looking for 'scooter friendly' ways to get around. Maybe this is just a start, something like this can catch on and be improved upon.
I like the idea.

I'm in a fairly big city.

The site has almost no info about New York City either. Evidently it's "crowd-sourced" data (the only explanation for why it's so hit-or-miss), so it's only as useful as the amount of interest from people in your area supplying them with information.

Denver shows mostly nada. What it does show is wrong - there are no 75 mph speed limit roads through the heart of Denver.

A good idea. They should allow people to submit speed limits. I'd contribute!

They're also apparently using Google or Bing and not providing a link or credit, which is probably not allowed.

I would contribute. With all the riders in Austin we would have it mapped out in no time.
