Buddy 170i questions, 2 of them

Post by Wolfhound »

Breaking in the 170i and noticing 2 things: 1. When I turn it off there is a
fan like sound that slowly fades out. A clicking that winds down is a better
way to describe it. 2. Taking off from a full stop there is a momentary
hesitation before the CVT kicks in and when stopping there in a momentary
free wheeling before a full stop. Any idea what these two are?
Not a prob, just curious. I love this scoot!! : :D

That wind down clicking noise is normal and is the sound the hot metal makes when it's cooling down. Not sure about the free wheeling before a full stop but that momentary hesitation or lag if you will before the CVT kicks in seems to go with the breed. I too noticed it when I did my test ride at the dealers but it's less than a second and I soon got used to it. Perhaps the free wheeling and the CVT lag are somehow linked and if the free wheeling is happening with my 170i it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal as I'm just not noticing anything. I'm too busy just plain enjoying the ride!!

The free wheeling before a stop is normal with a cvt as the clutch disengages when the rpm falls below 2500rpm or so. Cvt hesitation will get better as the belt gets stickier all sound normal to me...

What you two are saying makes sense. I have owned 5 scoots with CVT trannies, 2 Chinese and 3 Taiwanese and this is the first one that has ever
displayed either trait. They never displayed the lag, a better term than mine,
so as you say must go with the breed. I was not worried about either one,
just curious. All my others were 150s or a 250. And of course we are dealing with a modified GY6 engine which might explain the difference. Thank you. :?

Are you hearing the fuel pump priming?

Mine does the freewheeling thing too, but I haven't at all noticed any lag at take-off. In fact, my perspective is that it seems incredibly responsive and when I'm next to cars in other lanes, I'm usually the first vehicle to pull out.

All centrifugal clutches operate in this way. The delay on startup is usually very short when you increase rpms quickly. The delay when slowing down is typically more noticeable. What you actually feel is engine braking followed by free wheeling after the clutch releases. I have owned 6 different bikes with this clutch design and all have had this characteristic - admittedly the feel is more pronounced on some than others. I suspect you just hadn't noticed it before on other bikes, but now that you are watching for it - the sensation becomes more obvious.

Dooglas, that may well be. On the 17oi I am being a lot more observant as
I am breaking it in. I do tend to hit the throttle when I take off but have
not hot rodded this one so far.
