Typical bunch of jerks that think the city's their own personal playground, and f-all to everyone else. Ran into the same type of crap Saturday night coming home from a reunion on Long Island. Bumper to bumper near Kennedy Airport and about 20 of these fools decided to lane split (illegal in NY) both sides of the center lane - 40-50 MPH and loud enough to blow out eardrums. You wanna play badass biker? Go hit the track. At least you won't back up 5 miles of traffic when it's time to hose you off the pavement. This kind of rider gets no sympathy from me at all. Judgemental? You bet.

Actually, the guy who got squashed wasn't the one who did the brake check. It was one of the ones who surrounded the car during the initial confrontation. In any event, this should serve as a lesson to all drivers and riders about what you can expect when you choose to act like a thug.
If no contact was made, then be smart, back off, and don't escalate. If contact was made, pull over, call the cops, and control your temper. Nobody gets hurt, everyone gets to go home.

Read thru some of the comments and watched a couple other videos of this same 'biker gang' pulling similar stunts; one where a cabbie "avoids a Biker Beatdown because some undercover cops show up" (video posters words), and another on Jalopnik involving a Prius driver being harassed.
The attitudes, the injuries, the - well, pretty much everything about it - is a damned shame, all the way around... :/

i was not there, did not do it, and claim no responsibility. i could laugh, and so could others. but it would not change a thing about what happened, or who did it
this wasn't done for laughs, and i wouldn't laugh about it. or even think to
but i'm not too serious or sensitive, either. this happened very far away from me and i am fine today

i wonder why YOU think anyone is getting a laugh, though?

what troubles me is that all riders are perceived as subhuman, worthless and members of violent motorcycle gang simply because they were riding in a large group. What I am wondering is what this driver would have done if he was not around motorcycles but instead stuck in traffic and rear ended a car. Was he going to plow over the other car and drivers and than claim crazy NY drivers were threatening his ass? If someone cuts me off - I fall back from them as far as I can to avoid trouble. I've driven in NY...once. I parked my car and used subway to get around. car stayed parked until we left very early in am to avoid traffic. Next visit I took a Greyhound. I am not an aggressive driver and it was a scary experience. The riders were not doing anything different than what NY drivers usually do, except they were riding not driving. What bothered me most is amount of venom spewed by readers towards riders. What if this driver did not have his baby and wife with him? What would have been his excuse for vehicular homicide?

With all due respect, you are kidding, right? You may have driven in NYC once - I drove there daily for years. While the pace is hectic and maneuvering room is minimal (all the more reason not to act like a pack of wolves), surrounding another vehicle, slashing its tires and trying to pull the driver out are NOT what NY drivers usually do, regardless of what you might have heard. You should reserve your anger for the riders, not because they're riders, but because they're punks and THEIR ACTIONS make everyone on two wheels look bad. Also, since there were no fatalities there was no homicide.Stormswift wrote:what troubles me is that all riders are perceived as subhuman, worthless and members of violent motorcycle gang simply because they were riding in a large group. I am not kidding. I am describing NY driving from a perspective of someone who is not from NY for quite some time and not used to that kind of aggressive driving. Would I want to drive next to 200+ bikers? No. I would slow down, let them pass if someone cut me off I would stop. If I got on the road with that many bikes I would immediately look for a way to get off and avoid driving with a group that size around me. I would not have them in front of me and I would be getting out of their way as soon as safely possible. Running over another human being on purpose is not an option for a human. Now a wild animal that is caught in a trap might chew off its leg that is in the trap to get away. Human beings are not supposed to act like animals. There was another white van in that video. Why was it not being harassed and only this SUV was targeted? Riders let the other vehicle pass. I also did not see too may "gang" colors so I am not sure where the idea of a motorcycle gang came form unless public perceives any group of bikers as being part of a gang. In that case we all should be very careful out there when we ride in a group.charlie55 wrote:With all due respect, you are kidding, right? i have reviewed the tape further, evening news style. and i have concluded the SUV driver had it coming. coward, comes to mind. i have this opinion only after looking at a report which included language such as "pack of bikers" and "chasing down," etc.
but the dude RAN OVER parked bikes and riders. RAN OVER THEM as all waited!! most likely for authorities to arrive and take care of matters. an accident had occurred, even if ONE of the riders fault, and this guy wasn't just going to drive away. other motorcyclists decided to keep him there
oh, which made him FEAR FOR HIS LIFE. because of public perception about riders this would seem reasonable to some. i mean forget the fact that if you, i, or many others had been in the same situation we would react differently. as a fellow rider i don't fear other riders but this guy..."omg THEY ARE GOING TO KILL US!!" he FLED the scene of an accident, causing more harm then they could ever to him with a motorcycle
i have a feeling this guy muscled his way into the group and when they tried to slow him and use some caution he hit one and....ooops! f-d up now, right buddy? can't say for sure, but he feared for his life maybe because he did f-up?
i can't say for sure but i do know one thing. and that is only a coward who understands little about people would run over innocents, much less their bikes
people like this should never leave the house, never unlock thier car doors, or maybe even look out a window. its a big world out there, and those SCARY motorcycles are EVERYWHERE
surrounded? WE are SURROUNDED by cars everyday and don't hit the panic button. why should a bunch of bikes on the road panic....anyone?
stay home, corwards. and know this. riders have a right to the road as much as anybody. be us one in numbers or riding in a group of 100. respect our space, and our lane. and don't run over motorcyclists just because you're a chickens***
this is ALL just based on the spin i have gotten from the news. BUT i did see a PARKED SUV and PARKED bikes. and the SUV take off at a HIGH RATE of speed, running over humans and bikes. he did not "creep." but without warning he FLOORED it and ran over innocent human beings
not so unbelievable after all imho. you might get your ass beat

This stood out to me as well. I wonder - what was the 'trigger' incident which made this particular SUV guy get 'noticed' in the first place?Stormswift wrote:There was another white van in that video. Why was it not being harassed and only this SUV was targeted? Riders let the other vehicle pass.

Source - BostonGlobe.com, about the rider who was run over:
Though Mieses is a Massachusetts resident, he has never had a valid Massachusetts driver’s license for a passenger vehicle and has never applied for a motorcycle license, the Registry of Motor Vehicles said.
Registry records show that Mieses applied for a learner’s permit in 1999 and 2000, but that he never obtained a full license because he failed to pay fines imposed after he was ticketed for speeding in Lawrence in 1999. His last contact with the Registry was in 2001, when he obtained an identification card, registry records show.
Since 1999, he has been ticketed by police 16 times, in Lawrence, Methuen, Roxbury, Andover, and New Hampshire, according to registry records.
In June, the Registry notified the National Driver Register that Mieses was a habitual traffic offender whose right to drive in Massachusetts was revoked until 2017, records show.

Okay, let me get this straight. A group of motorcyclists were heading to midtown Manhattan for an annual disruptive event. A motorcycle pulls in front of a car, slows down abruptly and gets tapped by the car. 50+ other cyclists surround the car, clearly intimidating. The car flees the scene, and hits another cyclist who just happens to not have either a motorcycle or auto drivers licence, has multiple driving offences and has his privilege to drive in his home state revoked for many years. I think the SUV driver absolutely had it coming. Just a group of docile law abiding citizens on two wheels out for a Sunday ride. They should sue for harassment.

This is what I believe happened as deduced from a lot of reading and watching the video several times- It's still unclear to me if the true initial problem wasn't captured.
Apparently what started the problem was the SUV merging into the group of riders where some felt it was an unsafe merge. There's some accounts that the merge lane ended and the SUV had no where to go. This is unconfirmed.
It appears that stemming from that incedent, some of the riders shared their displeasure with the SUV driver. As motorcycle rideres, we know all too well how often cars carelessness almost takes us out so I at least understand the emotion but I can't justify anything beyond that.
At that point, one of the bikes (operated by cruz I believe), got directly in front of the SUV and while looking back, abruptly hit his brakes -which lead to the SUV contacting the bike- causing the the whole mass to stop- blocking all traffic - SUV in the middle.
Some dismounted to help cruz while others approached the SUV, hit the SUV, caused damage and attempted to incapacitate it by slashing at the tire(s). It appears the SUV sounded it's horn then fled -running over some bikes and bikers that were in front of it. The SUV was chased down and the rest is pretty apparent.
My take-
this probably started out as a simple problem of circumstance- a large group of riders trying to stay together on a busy road (that they didn't have a (gathering)permit doesn't bother me -if any of them couldn't legally ride- that does bother me) but I can see where a merge lane ending might cause the resultant "closeness" and tension. I don't really see fault yet... but here's where the problems of MOB metallity start. One (or a few) testosterone enboldened idiot(s) decide to flex their might. They act stupdily and cause the first real contact. I reject that all in the group were idiots, but there's always the few that ruin it for everyone. Unfortunately, the guy that got the most hurt -maybe even paralyzed- seemed like he was trying to help Cruz- the guy who did the brake check and got bumped. At this point- the SUV was stopped so clearly- he wasn't intent on running anyone over.
My guess is some other idiots caused the SUV driver to so fear for his and his family's safety - by getting even more heated (after the contact that one of their group created) that the SUV driver felt he needed to take extreme measures to get out of there. Something that given the circumstances, I can completely understand and support... seemingly so do the authorities.
The SUV driver does not appear to be getting charged - I agree with this.
Cruz- is getting charged- I agree with this.
The other rider in the group that turned himself in- is not getting charged and if this is the guy seen using his helmet to break the SUV window- I have no idea how they're justifying that.
Sad and needless- it gives motorcyclists a bad name and caused way more devestation than just a little courtesy could have completely avoided. My lesson- we all know that one idiot in our group. We need to either not ride with him of take responsibility for reigning them in- lest his mistakes may become our problems.

I"m still in wondering who IS MORE AT FAULT in a court of law in this case. I've seen video of it and clearly he was break checked. A rather stupid thing to do on a motor bike btw. Then the motor bikes decide to suround the SUV. They should have known better as that would scare the driver of the SUV. Even more so with his familiy with him. To me it was the classic "fight or flight" nature in all of us that caused the most harm. The driver, in his mind, believed he was going to be harmed so he ran and unfortunately over a rider which in turn angered the other riders and they assulted him. As a rider I cannot condone what they did as they clearly were out to do illegal showboating on the roads. A real rider would at least gone off the main roads to try such stunts if at all. It's a bit like a tagger going to times square and trying to tag up the place in broad daylight hoping they don't get caught....In other words the riders brought this on themselves.

I've watched the video several times and have failed to see where the riders began attacking the car after the initial incident. I 100% believe that the rider that got bumped was at fault, but I don't see any reason for the driver of the Range Rover to mow down a bunch of people to get away. Now if they were at that point already trying to yank him out of the car, I can't say I wouldn't do the same thing. There has to be mutual respect between drivers and bikers. On the highway any licensed driver has a right to be there. The guy in the Range Rover was not in the left lane and had no obligation to get out of the way of passing motorcycles. If you don't want to deal with traffic, find somewhere else to play.

Refer to foxnews.com and drudgereport.com for the rest of the story. The Hells Angels former leader sides with the driver. The rider who was hit and had his back broken is a repeat offender riding on a revoked drivers license
and no motorcycle license. It is a sad story any way you cut it but from what I read I would have to put the bulk of the blame on the bikers in this case. And it gives all of us a bad name.

You may want to skip some of the news outlets and watch what was really going on.
Over on adventure rider there are some great threads.
Had it been me I would have taken out as many of these thug/societal nuisances as possible. Not just one.
The real kicker, where were the police who usually always are frequenting forums and such to find where the action is or respond to the hundreds of calls for this group as they tormented the streets.

JHScoot wrote:i have reviewed the tape further, evening news style. and i have concluded the SUV driver had it coming. coward, comes to mind. i have this opinion only after looking at a report which included language such as "pack of bikers" and "chasing down," etc.
but the dude RAN OVER parked bikes and riders.
Unfortunately, there WERE cops present: http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?secti ... id=9274018

The posts I read about this on other sites just brings up untold rage. Ive been nearly killed several times by cars. You're in a car what do you have to fear? He came up on a group of bikers and decided to join them? Hmm dumb idea. Why would anybody do that. Hmm I see about thirty motorcycles I'll force my way into the middle of them. The biker that brake checked did get what was coming to him though. Other than that the comments I read seem to say that it's ok to kill or try to kill somebody just because they are on a bike. Wow, I'm glad I don't know these assholes. I wish I hadn't read any of this. It all angers up the blood. To be honest I'm upset with the original poster for stressing me out. lol. I think I'll start carrying a gun on me when I ride. Next time a car tries to run me off the road or nearly kills me I'll repay the favor. As I watched this video I agreed with the bikers chasing him. He ran over people. If I sat and saw somebody possibly kill some people and run away, I'd go after him too. I saw a guy hit a car with his and then try to run and he was chased down. Everyone was ok with this. But if he tries to run away and kill people it's not ok? AAAA I wish I hadn't read this.

This was a bunch of bikers who thought the rules of the road did not apply to them. If this all started because some of the bikers didn't like the way the SUV merged onto the highway, its most likely because they weren't allowing anyone to merge onto the highway. There are six other videos posted by the guy with the helmet cam. You can view them here- http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/the-fo ... 1435594427 . These guys were running red lights, driving on the sidewalk and driving between cars in the on coming lane. Cruz is definitely guilty of road rage for pulling the brake check, he should be glad the SUV driver didnt slam on his brakes when he did that, there may have been a bunch of bikers running into the ass-end of that SUV. As far as who is right or wrong, you would have to put yourself in both of there shoes and think about what you would have done.

Well these videos should put the matter to rest. ATV's on the Expressway??, Half of them not dressed properly, none of them riding correctly. They were lucky that they did not get taken out by an 18 wheeler or two. Try that in Atlanta traffic and Grady Hospital would not be able to handle the casualties.
After seeing these there is no question in my mind as to where the blame lies. It is a no brainer.

He should have just forgone the instinct to survive or protect his family.Stormswift wrote:I just wonder, how many of us would want to be stuck on a lifeboat with that SUV driver if a week away form land and enough water for only one.....
I would be amongst people like him of strong will then being amongst the weak who succumb to adversity.

PS, just so that I am clear: this was total mayhem and it should not have been Police is supposed to control what goes on in the roadways If there were cops there riding with that group than police should have known the rout and the destination and had clearly marked police cars driving with the riders. I do not approve of senseless violence, not from the bikers who kicked the drivers ass and not from the driver who panicked and thinks presence of wife and kid excuses using his vehicle as a weapon. What bothers me the most about this entire thing is that our society excuses violence in any form, especially such graphic violence. I am also extremely upset with the way media presented this situation from scratch, using inflammatory language such as "biker gang" without any proof. That there were plenty unsavory characters riding that day is no doubt. That this driver may have avoided getting his ass kicked had he not taken off and run over a person is also a question. That one middle aged bystander was able to intervene and stop the beating is also very telling : it was very likely a diffusible situation had the driver not panicked. The reason he panicked is because he is a bigot when it comes to anyone on 2 wheels, just as the media. To him any more then an individual rider equals motorcycle gang. Unfortunately that seems to be general view of the public and that also means that by reporting this incident in a way that it has been reported the door in now wide open for any loon to run over a rider and than claim self-defense. As for the lifeboat scenario - the reason I brought it up is that observing individual's reaction in crisis is a good predictor of what they will do next time. I really do not think this driver would have done anything different had his wife and kid not been in the car with him

Hmm, an army of motorcyclists acting like lunatics and the average non-rider is supposed to think they are sane and capable of sound and better judgement?
You know nothing of the driver to pass judgment on his character.
Have you seen the videos of this group riding down sidewalks at 40+ mph, blocking intersections so there group can continue through, beating on the vehicles trying to get from point a to b doing as they are supposed to?
Stormswift, you scare me more than the Range Rover driver.
