Goodbye My Little Buddy

Post by NeoGenesisMax »

It's official. I traded in my Buddy 50 for a Like 200i. I fully intend to keep coming to this forum simply because it's the most informative and has the best people of any forum I've visited. I couldn't resist the 200i when it was only a few hundred more then what I paid for my Buddy. The Buddy 125 was slightly more expensive and didn't have fuel injection the other nice features of this Kymco. I've noticed that many of you have other scooters that aren't Genuine so please don't run me off with torches and pitch forks. lol.

How many of you have a Like 200i? I know I've seen at least two others on here.

I originally thought the like was a total dog, but it was a 50. the 200i seems to be decent. I rode one belonging to a friend a bit and it was fine.

He has a short but fast commute, and seems to enjoy it very much. He isn't the smallest guy around.

The dealership I bought it said they are seriously considering stopping selling 50cc 4 strokes. They are just to slow and dangerous, most people don't like them. I didn't that's why my first was the buddy. The Kymco 50s I rode back them all seemed slower and weaker than the buddy 50

Hello,
Just about to complete 3000 miles on my LIKE 200i since purchasing this April.
I really like it - using it daily (rain or shine) for my commute to work on city streets. Works great for me when I keep it 40MPH or below - not comfortable above that - but that's just me. Many LIKE'ers ride WOT all the time.
For the rains, I was advised to put on a set of Michelin City Grips - which I did and like them in the wet. Also, installed an NGK Iridium plug with good results- and did a major rebuild on the seat. I am 6'3" and 260 lbs and the stock seat was a killer after @ 40 mins riding. Running Honda Pro Hypoid gear oil and Amsoil Scooter specific 10W-40 Synthetic. Doing my own servicing - which is basically just the oils and checking the valve lash. Pretty easy to do once you learn how to get the front panel off.
Love the EFI, disc brakes and dual shocks and the ease of self/servicing. Scoot has been dead reliable - even after riding in a couple of major down-pours. The acceleration from stop lights in traffic continues to impress this big guy rider!
I think you will enjoy your new Kymco - and it certainly is a bargain for so much scooter! (Oh yes, I added a pair of long stemmed Italian mirrors to see behind my big shoulders)
PS: I very carefully followed the break-in instructions/limits per the manual for the first 1000 miles. Seems to have paid off - uses no oil between changes. Runs like a top! Seeing 80>84 MPG with each stop for BP 93 octane.

Where did you get the mirrors. These don't reach out as much as I'd prefer. Lucky I'm a bit short. It's as if the scooter was made exactly for my build. I find it very comfortable. Night and day difference between this and my old Big Ruckus clone.

Hi NeoGenesisMax!

I've had my Like200i for about a month now. I bought him when my Jeep died, so he's my daily commuter...40 miles per day up and down the beautiful coast of San Diego. So far so good. I got 70 mpg when I checked. Now I just keep a container of gas in my garage because it sucks going to the gas station every other day. This has worked out wonderfully.

While I don't have the same problem with the seat at others, I do want to get a different seat for it where I can scoot back a little more. I've had him (his name is Heinz) up to 64 mph at the fastest so far. If was zooming down Torrey Pines hill.

Keep us updated and please put some pics on here!! Yay!

Looking good OldScoot!!! I love your bumper! Where did you get it?? I'm going to attempt my first oil change this weekend. Once I read how to do it, it just seemed silly to pay someone $60 to open a valve and drain it. What about the bolts check though? Do I just go around the scoot with a wrench looking for bolts??

Take care!

I really like the Like. I was seriously considering getting one. I ended up finding an Aprilia Scarabeo 200 instead. Better egos for me and more HP.

After getting, I sat on a like again and found the seat height was too low for me relative to the floorboards.

I still think it's a beautiful bike. Enjoy!!!

Congrats on the Scarabeo! Beautiful scoots! My dealer doesn't carry them - but really like the big wheeled scoots.

First let me say thank you for all the positivity. It's been refreshing.

I've had it just over twenty four hours and have done over 100 miles. I am the most anal person when it comes to breaking it in so don't think I've ran the shit out of it. I have just ridden it frequently and let it sit and cool after about fifteen minutes of riding. The rear tire is just starting to break in but the front is lagging a bit. It keeps me cautious when turning. I am just about ready to buy more gas too. I assume the MPG will go up as the motor properly seats. Also I drive in a way that would seem strang but that's just because I am making sure to vary my speed to help the breaking in process. I'm sure that affects the MPG as well. It would seem that for most people the main complaints about this scoot is that it is called a 200 even thought it's a 163, the seat room, and the ecu limited top speed. I'm fine with all of those things. LOL I'd be lying if I said I haven't been representing it as a 200 to my friends.

This whole fuel injection thing is a trip. I had no idea how it affects things. I seems to decelerate quicker. Seems to engage the clutch sooner and allows the bike to roll to a stop out of gear, my buddy didn't seem to do that until I had stopped for a second or too. Ive noticed one or two other small and not so small things and love it. Like this morning it took all of like two seconds after it started to adjust the idle to what it needed to be for the cool humid morning air. I have done my best to keep it under half throttle and have hit fifty before I realized I need to back off, lol too used to the buddy running wot or damn near all the time and knew I wouldn't be speeding.

My biggest surprise so far (besides the speed when I first test rode it) is the speedo. I was riding down a road with a 25 speed limit and it has a speed camera and speed read out. They matched perfectly. When I ride at 40 on a 45 mph road I match the speed of most everyone. I'll gps it when i'm more used to riding it and the tires are broken in more. This one seems to be very accurate on it's speed readings up through the forties though.

Thanks. The crash bars are one of the few genuine Kymco accessories for the LIKE in the USA. Go to www.kymcousa.com , search LIKE 200i, click on accessories - see the cowl and the front fender chrome crash bars. I ordered mine from www.moxiescooters.com in Texas. I did an install DIY on kymcoforum.com. and you can find a free download for the LIKE manual there. Helps with engine and gear oil changes, and the adjustment of the 2 valves.
And, yes, have a seat next to your scoot and check the screws and nuts.....I found nothing loose on my LIKE.
My dealer wanted $376 for the 600 mile service. Valves, oils and nut-check.
This inspired me to buy the cyclepedia service manual for my LIKE (@$40, lifetime) and learn to do my own servicing - keeping records and receipts and photos of the servicing. I like servicing it - have done 6 engine oil changes, 4 gear oil changes and 3 or 4 valve adjustments in my 3000 miles. It is an easy scoot to service. Just be careful not to over-fill the oils or over tighten the drain plugs (snug is good - 'tight' is NOT needed!). Takes right at 6 Fl ounces of gear oil, and 4/5ths of a quart of engine oil (see owner's manual for refill amounts , not the capacity - just the re-fill , some stays in there after you drain)
Having a blast with it - and getting ready to try some snow riding here in Ohio! 3.5 miles to work - not too far.

Italian mirrors I found on eBay. Seem to be very good quality - and helps me keep an eye on the squirrels behind me! They have a 10mm stem, rather than flimsy 8mm on some - cuts down on the vibrations in the glass.

Also need the adapter bits to fit it to the LIKE , @$5 for the pair.

Riding your like around San Diego ??!- you're killing me here!
I'm trying to sort out snow tires for my LIKE and you're riding in southern California.
I hope you feel at least a little bit guilty!
Torrey Pines ?! There's a golf course there, somewhere.
Torey Pines ---I hope you run over a pine cone, get a flat Kenda and have to push your scoot all the way home!
Naw, that's great. It's better to be lucky than good looking. I'm very good looking in my snow suit.
Pictures of your scooter route, please. NOT of you - you're so lucky you gotta be funny looking!

Yep, the speedo on the Like is damn near perfect. I broke out my gps, and top speed of 64 is about 60 actual. Close enough for me.

In the 9k miles i've put on mine my top speed has dropped to around 60. It's time for another new spark plug and a belt/roller change.

Some reminders for a new Like owner.
Fill your tank till gas just reaches the top of the bar, no more. My dealer (a power sports place, not a scooter shop) sent me home with a topped off tank, the second I pulled up to my house 1 mile away I was pouring gas through my puke tubes.
If your rear starts squeaking when braking or going over bumps... oil the rubber stopper on your center stand. (took me a few hours to figure that one out).
Check the screws holding on the gray plate on your exhaust, they can loosen every few hundred miles.
You don't have a true oil filter, only a screen, I change every 1k miles to be on the safe side.
Your stock tires are petty good and sticky once broken in, you can really tear into some corners with them. My front still has 1/2 tread at 9k miles, my rear should have lasted to 6-7k if I didn't have to plug it, and if the plug didn't fail.

Beef,

You are just the best!!! Thanks so much for the info! I'm not at 550 miles as of this morning! Goign to change my oil this weekend (fingers crossed) and go over Heinz (my Like) with a wrench looking for lose bolts! Sound about right? How do I know when the tires are "broken in"? It's getting ready to be rainy season and I have to admit that I'm nervous. My Like is my only mode of transportation.

After 500 miles, I'm sure you're tires are broken in, all it takes is enough riding to take off the original "smooth" outside of the tire from when it was molded. Once the mold hairs (whatever they're called) are gone you're pretty good to go. Just take it easy in the rain regardless.

They aren't sold new anymore in the states that I know. Jumped on this one when I found it on CL.

Are you Stig on the Kymco forum? If so, I read lots of your posts while looking for a bike!

So I've read that people have a twenty four hour or military style clock on their Like, mine's normal twelve hour. For some reason it also had Month and Date on it. But no trip?

Random thought.... I had two 80s cars and they both told me my mpg while driving and my average. This was a wondrous feature. I play games trying to get the high score on mpg. I realize they took that out of cars because over twenty years later and we still make cars that get worse mpg than an 86 Chrysler New Yorker. I regularly hit over 40 mpg on flat highway on cruise control. I said all that stuff to get to this point. Why don't scooter makers put this feature on their instrument cluster? Seems like most scooter riders like to get amazing mpg and like to brag about their mpg. I wanna see my current mpg and my average.

BTW the tires are finally starting to feel broken in but i'm still cautious. I'm at about 130 miles on the OD. I do find it interesting that the manual says to keep it under half throttle and I've seen just over 50 mph doing that. Hope i'm not pushing it too hard. I only held that speed for about a mile before I slowed down though.

My thoughts exactly! They were able put the odometer, 2 trip meters, volt meter, air temp and time on the Scarabeo, why couldn't they add MPG? It's not hard to figure out, but that would have been nice to have.

Boy, you sure kept for 50 clean!!!! Saw it yesterday, and was almost tempted to buy it. I haven't seen a used 50 that clean EVER! Kind of cool that we only live about 2 miles apart too..... I'm sure I will see you around somewhere, sometime.....Congrats on the new ride.... oh, and yeah, I Love how a lot of the new cars are touting their mileage, and my 99 Saturn, with 100,000 miles on it will still get 45mpg highway, at 70 with A/C and cruise on, as long as I can just go and not have to start stop....

I too would like to see the actual mpg or at least have a trip re-set. Something to help calculate the mpg would be great. I got mine at 70.4. The break in for the Like is hard! I have to get places and keeping at 1/2 throttle? Craziness. I'm not at 550 miles on my Like. He's fun and I hope I'm breaking him in properly but it's so hard to tell.

Yeah I regularly wax, etc.. I would really completely detail my buddy onec every two months and always kept it washed. I even quick detailed in between serious detailing it. Ray and Dave agreed my Buddy looked better coming back for.the first service then when it left the show room floor and looked better than what was in the show room. BTW im at 175 miles now. I just waxed the Kymco and got a better look at the paint job and panels. There are small imperfections (about five i think) but they are so minor that I honestly believe only I could pick them out. So I'm fine with it. Did they put the black out kit on my old buddy? And do you remember what they were asking for it?

Because then you'd be watching the MPG gauge rather than the road... and thats why I've nearly been creamed by dozens of Prius drivers.

I have had my Like going on 15 months and 6,000 miles. It's been a great scooter. It runs better with each passing mile. MPG averages 80, top speed around 63 with a GPS check of 60. Do check the air cleaner box mounting bolts. One of mine came loose. Got a replacement and used Loctite blue as a preventative measure. The clock has its quirks. Some months the hour of 12 shows as 00. The date is all over the board. Some days it's correct, other days it can advance a day or two or jump a full months. For the entire month of September the date showed as 00:1-30. If I leave it alone it self corrects, but it could be a full 30 days before it does so. To aide in the removal of the front panel to perform valve adjustments and replace spark plug, I use plumbers grease (silicone) on the tabs to prevent binding.

Welp, I'm just over 200 miles now. I also noticed thaf when i set my clock thag for a split second it showed 00 instead of 12 on my clock. I tried to.get it to.do it again and couldnt get it to do it again. Im on my third tank of gas.

Does anyone else have trouble putting gas in it? The bar just under the gas cap seems to make gas splash up and out in small droplets. I have to fiddle with it for a bit to.find an angle to put the nozzle in so this wont happen.

If you don't have those vapor recovery sleeves in your state it's pretty easy, I just aim the nozzle behind the bar, or in front. I've never had any issues.

The clock has a mind of its own. Set the time and date and forget about the stupid thing. After 15 months I've learned to ignore it.

Here in Cali we have those vapor recovery boots. As such I have to pull back on the boot when filling as the filler neck is not long enough. I slightly angle the nozzle towards the front of the scooter to minimize splashing. I also slowly fill the tank. What I have found is that if you overfill the tank into the neck that you can shake the scooter and the level of fuel will drop clearing the neck. The tank seems to trap air. I always shake my scooter a little when I think its full. I find I can add a bit more fuel that way.

What purpose does that bar serve? Is it simply there to let you know where to fill to?

Yes, don't go above the bar. The buddy has a similar design but it's a ring w/ little holes.

And i've never had a issue with my clock, it's always been correct. It did go out on a ride once, when I noticed it it tapped it with my knuckles and it came back on, it's never done that since.

well I found out last night that the owner's manual on the kymco is just as ass backwards as the buddy's. It specifically says that the first service is at 600 miles. But when you go to the scheduled maintenance it say the first is at 200 miles. HMMMMMM, if people frak this up it's Kymco's fault. I'm reminded of my buddy's owner's manual that said there were three motor sizes for the buddy, 50, 125, 150, and 170. Guess they can't count. I'm glad I went ahead and changed the oil. The oil that was in there was completely spent and it would have been bad to wait until 600 miles. I didn't check the valves or anything else, just drained the old crud and put in new 10w-40, it calls for 15w-40 but good luck finding it.

Hey what did you folks with Like's do? Did you wait to 600 or did you service it at 200? My shop's closed and my scoot is my daily transportation so I felt it was best to at the least change my oil. BTW that drain plug was a bitch to get off.

I purchased my Like with 2k miles on it. So first service was already taken care of, which in turn saved me even more money. And being as the like doesn't have a true oil filter, just a screen, I change mine ever 1k 1.5k miles, the book recommends every 1.2k miles. I'd say after your first two changes, switch to synthetic just to be on the safe side. As for the valves, I checked them every 2k miles, it took mine till about 8k miles till the valves needed adjusting.

Ok, where is the screen? I couldn't find it in the manual. I'm not too worried about the valves. Do you have any advice on performing the check? I've never done one but believe I am capable.

You'll find the drain/screen bolt on the bottom of the engine near the dip stick.

To check the valves requires removing the seat and storage tub and the removal of the front engine compartment panel. When you remove the seat and storage tub you'll notice several plastic tabs holding the panel in place in addition to the two screws you'll notice near the chromed vents. Use a Popsicle stick or similar shape tool to release the tabs. I find applying a little plumbers grease helps. Also remove the battery covers makes removing the front panel easier. Once the panel is removed you'll have easy access to the valve cover.

You can buy 15w40 at advance/oreillys or Walmart. I like delo 400 or rotella. Either are excellent oil. I usually buy a gallon. I change my oil every couple of months due to the performance parts on my scoot.

This video for an oil change on a Super 8 shows exactly where the screen is. I'd go ahead and change again.

nice acquisition...I like the Kymco Like 200's, but there isn't a Kymco dealer within 45 minutes riding time from my house; that complicates things when I would require service, repairs, and inspections

I made it to the dealer today. He showed where the screen is. I changed my oil again today at 425 miles. I found two tiny metal shavings in the screen. I had made a mistake in using car motor oil. He told me I need to use motorcycle specific oil and should change it asap. So I did. I only put about five miles on that last oil, oh well live and learn. I would recommend to anyone with the same scoot to get a longer funnel than what I had. Mine had to be bent to fit. My dealer also told me that it's ok that I missed the 200 mile service and that he had a man come in for his first service at over 900 and was just fine. I still prefer to play things on the safer side. Also STILL NO LUCK FINDING 15w-40. It isn't at O'riley either. I went with Castrol 4t Motorcycle 10w-40. I was surprised at how lighter the color was of this oil. More of a light blond rather than a gold.

The manual specs 15w40 in sd spec. Sd spec was superseded in the 70s. Most any car or diesel oil will meet the spec. I would recommend 10w40 over the 15w40 if the scooter will be started under 30f temps considering we're headed into winter. I don't understand why they said it required motorcycle oil seeing as there is no gearbox or clutch sharing the crankcase.

I always prefer motorcycle oil. I think the break down is better then conventional automotive oil. Even without a tranny or clutch, the shear points of motorcycle oil are better. I'm sure they are used to people waiting way to long to change oil too, and figuring the breakdown with conventional oil is greater.
I've used everything through the years in motorcycles, of course when I started there weren't motorcycle specific oils, we just used good oils. I've even used outboard motor oil in two strokes before, and regular Castrol and Valvoline in lots of bikes. I used Castrol GTX in my BMW's for over a combined 300,000 miles with no problems what so ever.
We sell a lot of Rotella to motorcycle riders. I know a lot of riders that use Rotella 15-40 Diesel, and have never heard a complaint...

I too use motorcycle oil. Our local scooter dealer is also a BMW motorcycle dealership. The oil they use and I continue to use now that I do my own service is BMW 5w/40 synthetic. Be careful that you use or exceed the API recommendation in the manual. I have found a couple off brand oil that don't meet Kymco API requirement.

API? Whats that. This is sad i went to automotive classes in college and dont know what that means. The manual suggestes several viscosities and 10w-40 was one. It gets cold here and I ride all year long because i work just under 20 miles away and I would use at least two gallons of gas driving the firebird to and from work. And i prefer to go to and from work three or four time on a gallon and a half.

API stands for American Petroleum Institute. API sets industry standards for passenger and commercial vehicles. These standards are recognized and developed in conjunction with car and lubricant manufacturers. The letters next to API refer to the quality level of vehicle motor oil. The current highest available standard is SN. CF is a diesel engine or commercial vehicle standard and the highest current one is CJ-4. For more information go to the API website: www.api.org.

I don't have the Kymco manual in front of me, but I believe the API rating is SJ for the Like.
