[NSR] MacBook Pro

Post by Rob »

I just checked back and I originally started a thread (in July 2012) along these lines soliciting opinions about the MacBook Pro before I purchased. Well, being my usual over-analytical, procrastinating self .... I finally pulled the trigger and purchased this:

I'd actually planned to wait until next year, but my company is, at the end of this year, yanking a 1 time benefit to reimburse employees 50% (up to $500) on the purchase of a PC. So I jumped in now.

I've only had it a couple of days, and so far, so good ... although for a long time user of Windows OS's, this will definitely take some getting used to.

I suppose with an iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro, I'm now firmly in Apple's back pocket. :D Hopefully this won't initiate one of those tedious Windows vs Apple wars.

Original thread for those interested:

It's a well-engineered, fast machine with good software. I'm guessing you'll like it. (And for what it's worth, the Macs are Apple's least-locked-down product, so you haven't substantially enslaved yourself with this step. :) )

Congratulations on your MacBook Pro! The retina screen looks jaw-droppingly great, doesn't it? Wow. Also, with the solid-state hard drive, the Pro is fast. That's a really great machine that should keep you happy for years. Again, congratulations! :D

The display is outstanding. Some of the things I've looked at just blow me away! And you're absolutely correct, the SD drive is really quick. 11 seconds from the time I hit the power button until the system is up. The only downside is I no longer have time for my cup of coffee while I'm waiting for my system to start up.

I'm going to have to watch some of the Mac "how to" videos, head to the Apple forums and probably buy a manual or two (there are so many, it's just a matter of finding a good one .... sometimes I really miss my local Borders store).

I'm coming up to speed fairly quickly, but miss some of my Windows basics (or haven't discovered their Mac equivalent) .... such as the backspace key, the delete key seem to functioning more as the backspace key on my old system, trying to open up multiple, simultaneous Safari windows, eliminating the password requirement for boot up, etc. Lots of small things at this point.

But what a great machine.

Yeah, the Delete key deletes to the left, like the Backspace key (in the same location) on Windows computers. To delete to the right, hold down the "fn" key and press Delete. ("Backspace" is a holdover from IBM typewriter keyboards, which the IBM PC inherited.)
trying to open up multiple, simultaneous Safari windows,
Command-N. For most of the usual keyboard shortcuts, substitute the Command key for Ctrl: e.g. Command-S to save, Command-C to copy. (This is a holdover from the 1970s Apples, while using the Ctrl key was inherited from IBM mainframes.)
eliminating the password requirement for boot up, etc.
Go into System Preferences, Users & Groups, click the Lock to unlock the settings, then select Login Options.

Thanks for the tips! I discovered a "how to" vid on the apple forum that addresses the conversion habits from the Windows to OS X environments. As soon as I get a little more free time (i.e., after Christmas), I have to start getting serious about learning this machine.

Well, the Surface (RT version though) has been in my thoughts lately.
