IRS business expense for my Buddy

Post by climbguy »

I purchase my Buddy for the primary purpose of traveling to clients.

The scooter is in my name, but I need to expense mileage driven over 2013.

The IRS currently states one can expense $0.555 per mile, but I believe that implies a car is used.

How do other people out there handles this for their Buddy? Being able to use $0.555 would be great, I just want to make sure it won't get me into trouble.

The IRS normally uses the same automobile mileage rate for business expenses as the GSA mileage reimbursement rate. That is 56 cents per mile in 2014. The GSA also establishes a motorcycle mileage rate, which is 53 cents per mile in 2014. The link below says that the IRS does not establish a motorcycle rate so you must use the actual expense method. ( a nuisance, and doesn't seem fair - but who said the IRS is fair  )

Better check with a tax accountant (or attorney) on this question.

My employer offers a flat mileage-reimbursement for job-related travel, and they officially don't care what kind of vehicle you use to get there. But that has about as much relevance to the IRS as our company's casual-Fridays policy.

I've used scooters for business purposes for years. The mileage allowance is the same no matter what vehicle is used.

Be sure to keep records in accordance with IRS requirements. This year it is $.56/mile
