Suggested maintenance for Buddy 50?

Post by Yorkiemom »

My little tangerine 50 is about to roll over 4000 miles...I have never done a thing except add gas and oil. Anything else she needs? I have the transmission oil changed in my 170i every other oil change...but assuming the 50 doesn't need this???

Have you ever changed the gear oil? The initial change should usually be done between 500-600 miles to get all of the left over factory gunk out of it. After that people's opinions differ, but some suggest changing every 1500-2000ish miles.

Other than that I'd check your muffler guard bolts (they tend to rattle a little loose sometimes), check your spark plug, tighten up your rear drum brake, check out your front brake pads. Oh, and obviously check your tire pressure if that not something that you already do monthly! :D

You should do your gear oil every 4k. Other items on your two stroke is spark plug and air filter. Be sure your tires are inflated properly. They can be 10 lbs low and still look fine. Top off the two stroke oil reservoir.

THANK YOU!

Thank you both. I had the 500 mile service completed at my dealer...but I have not had the gear oil changed again yet. I will get her in as soon as is possible...not putting as many miles on her due to riding the 170i to work now because I am now teaching far enough away that the 50 wasn't enough speed. I have tightened the muffler cover screws a couple of times...and am DILIGENT about tire pressure. I also own a couple of motorcycles and it's something I am very cautious about. I will take a peek at the brakes and see about tightening the drum...haven't done that before but sounds pretty simple. Thanks again. Ride safe.

You can do the gear oil very easily if you can tighten the bolts on your muffler. Its basically, loosen bolt, drain, tighten bolt, fill gear oil. I use a large syringe to measure 90cc's and then just shoot it in the fill hole. 10 minutes easy.

Thank you...I just might give it a try...I used to change the oil in my car until they put everything out of reach for normal tools!!! Surely I can do that...just have to locate where the gear oil goes!! I should also probably be changing my own oil in the 170i, but I have never gotten the courage to tinker much with my bikes...for fear of screwing something up! :-)
