Today's Questions Lessons Learned

Post by riancurtis »

Today i went to eat with some friends. the following is a horrible horrible story.
Pulled up to restaurant and got stoked as hell about locking my new buddy with my new Kryptonite NY Noose. Parked. Pulled out the chain lock and separated the lock. Then I wrapped the chain around the place I was chaining it to. This is when it got ugly. Somehow when I separated the lock I placed the the keyed end back under my seat with my keys still in it. As I went down to hook the other end of the chain I burned the hell out of my leg on the muffler, jumped back and in doing so leaned onto the seat and closed it with my keys inside. With my skin visibly bubbling on the muffler and my keys locked in my compartment I called my grandmother like I was a 12 year old and she brought me the spare. My leg was not so bad but my pride was.

After she got there, I decided to go to Walmart immediately and get a spare made. Got it. Paid for it. Does not work. I also bought a small digital clock cause my ONE COMPLAINT with the buddy is that I dont know what time it is. It is not working well either.
Trial and error. Trial and error.

So some questions for my new friends here:
1) What have you all done to make extra keys? Does it have to be done through a dealership?
2) What kind of clocks do you have mounted or otherwise on the Buddy? I really do need to do something to tell the time

Lessons learned:
1) My leg hurts
2) NEVER PUT YOUR KEY IN YOUR SEAT COMPARTMENT EVEN IF IT IS WIDE OPEN
3) Kryptonite New York Noose only works when you are able to lock it.
4) My Memaw is SUPER nice.

****update******
this post helped. I sometimes dont find things until after

I think there's a way to pop the seat open if you take the front panel off the bike. If not, you're stuck going to the dealer, and I don't think they can order you replacement keys without the little brown tag that is probably on your keychain under your seat. If you LOSE your keys and don't have the code, you have to replace your ignition, but I'd have to figure there has to be a way to open the seat that's easier than replacing the ignition.

Here's a fun experiment. take your (only) scooter key (or put both of them on the same keychain) and stand on a street, about 50 feet from a manhole with a 1" diameter hole, just big enough for your keychain to fall into. Make sure that the manhole sits over a rushing torrent of nasty sewer water, at least knee deep and full of rats. Then throw your key(s) in any direction, and watch them magically get sucked towards the manhole and skid across the street, balance right on the edge of the hole just long enough for you to run towards them, then as you reach out to pick them up, watch them fall in the hole. You can go down there with a metal detector, electromagnets, and a rat-proof suit, but you'll never find 'em.

Then go to the dealer and order six spare keys, and put one in a safety deposit box, one in your sock drawer, one at work, one in your car, and leave one with your dealer. You won't be able to lose your regular key if you try. You can drop it into a wood chipper and five minutes later, you'll find it in the side pocket of your cargo pants. In one thousand years, all six of those spare keys will be right where you left them.

Here's a link to a post about clocks...

I ALSO CALL MY GRANDMA "MEMAW"!!! Mr. Green I've never known anyone else that calls there's that... They're always like, WHO? I thought it was a common grammy nickname.

P.S. they sell Buddy key blanks (I think Scooterworks has them). You may have to buy one from them and then have it cut...

To solve the clock problem, I picked this up at Farm 'N' Fleet (yes, I live in the sticks) for about $7.

It comes with velcro, but I used straight 3M double sided tape.

I don't know what farm & fleet is  , but Pepboys has them too! Just as cheap... I was considering that as an option too. Where did you mount it? How do you like it?

Ooops, I lied. I did use the velcro patch, but I'm thinking it may get switched to the 3M in future. I flipped the swing-bracket it is one so it's upside down from the way it would be used in a car and mounted it under the speedo on the black part. I'll get a pic later today.

Here's a place online.

Just google "Bell clock-compass-thermometer" and you should get a slew of options.

My buddy came with 2 keys, I locked mine in by accident once far from home, no phone to call. My little genuine key fob was caught on the seat so I tried pulling it out, the chain then got stuck and broke, so I had my key fob in hand, but no keys!

I had to FORCE the set up which was less than a centimeter, and force my fingers in there, and grab my keys, my hand still hurts, but I didnt harm the buddy, just my own hands, and my key fob :(

Lucky the key didnt fall down to the actual storage area.

WHAT ABOUT THIS?

Today i was riding (have rode about 100 miles today) at a steady 50 mph.
All of the sudden my freaking scooter just wont accelerate. The engine was still running but i just could not accelerate. I pulled over really quick and killed the engine. Sure enough I started the engine back and it all worked fine. Weird

AND THIS....

my seat does not pop up anymore. When I unlock it I have to pull it up - if i unlock and then take the key out and THEN try to open the seat compartment - no dice. Not sure why. It is only 5 days old

Anyone else have these problems?

Cruising that fast on a engine that isnt broken in probably did that.

Seat latch problem is common, read the tutorial in the tech section on how to fix it in 5 minutes.

Adjust the cable on the back of the lock cylinder behind the front panel

Sorry about the leg. Times like these require a really really huge primal scream. Suddenly, all is brighter. :D :D

Hope the leg heals quickly.
Don't listen, go ahead and pick at it.
You know you want to.
The scab is irresistable.
Yes, that's it, touch it, now push on it a bit.
Does it seem like maybe its hard enough to pick off and not bleed?
Go ahead, give it a little pick right there on the edge.
Yep, see, it's ok. A little more.
OHHH, NO! YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO PULL THE WHOLE THING UP!! NOW ITS BLEEDING ALL OVER THE PLACE!
OK,ok, calm down.
Just leave it alone and it will scab over in a while.
No, you'll have to wait until at least until tomorrow to pick it again. :(
Well, maybe not.

Burns are nasty, hope you're over it soon. Grab an aloe leaf from the plant and rub the juice on the burn. It will be almost healed in a day.

ssshh. don't tell anyone, <g> but its been rumored that the buddy key will work on any buddy. so, if you're riding with someone or know someone with a buddy, ask to use their key to pop open your seat.

Bb, I'm really looking forward to the video of that!

To the OP - Yep, it's official, you had a bad day. On the bright side, you now have a really great scooter story to tell and you'll probably end up with a nice scar on your leg that you can show when you tell the story for years to come. And, judging from your post above, it appears that you managed to hang on to your sense of humor though the whole thing. From what I can tell, you're our kinda guy.

Welcome to Modern Buddy.

the key from my wife's '06 will pop the seat on my '08, but won't start it.

Kinda makes me wonder if all you need to do to open the seat is push and turn with anything handy... screwdriver, ball-point pen, stick, etc...

I feel your pain brotha. I laid down my brand-new, less than 300-miles on the clock black '08 on the way home in the rain today. Effe'd up a few panels, headlight bezel, bent the front brake lever and I think bent the handlebars too.

Well, at least we know the headlight bezels are readily available. Seriously, I hope you weren't injured. From your post it sounds mostly like a dinged Buddy and another war story I'm looking forward to hearing in person one of these days...
