Buddy Idling - Back Wheel Supposed to Spin?

Post by bruce13 »

My new Buddy starts up like a champ. I noticed today that once it started, the back wheel was spinning really fast and the engine was idling fast. After about 2 mins. into the warm up, the engine slowed down and the back wheel stopped spinning. By back wheel spinning, I mean that I had the bike up on the stand so it could warm up.

Is this normal or should I bring it in?

Oh sure, that's very common among CVT scooters. Since there is no true neutral gear, the back wheel will spin if the engine is idling fast enough to engage the centrifugal clutch. This is one of the reasons you should start a cold Buddy engine while it is up on the centerstand. I noticed my own Kermit doing that yesterday after I had changed the gear oil after finishing break in.

You can turn the carb's idle screw adjustment counter clockwise and turn your idle rpm's down to where it doesn't stall at a cold idle and I bet the wheel spin goes away. This will also enable you to start your scoot wear free when not on the center stand.

Nice Instructions

Thanks. Nice instructions. Now the Bike seems fine, so I probably won't adjust it yet. Probably the bike was hot?

It's not unusual for it to idle a bit high then settle down.

It's supposed to while warming up, 600 miles later on my bike, it doesnt spin at all anymore and idle is the same as it was when bought brand new. I think it's a break in thing. Just let the bike warm up for 2-3 minutes before each ride or else the back wheel will be really hard to back up on.
