HELP!!!! Locked my keys in the pet carrier...

Post by groovedirk »

Just got my Blur (06) and drove it to work. Maybe because I skipped lunch, maybe because it's a new scooter, but for whatever reason I wasn't paying attention and realized only 2 seconds AFTER closing the pet carrier that my keys weren't in the ignition. I just gotten the scooter so BOTH keys were on the same keychain. I must have dropped them with my gloves.

Dirk:

I work near Grand and Racine (couple blocks east), but I didn't ride today and I don't have my key.

I believe if you XXXXXXXXXXX, you can XXXXXXXXX, and it'll pop open, but if you just wanna wait until tomorrow, you can try mine. I doubt that any key will work, but it's worth a try.

fixed!!!!

Well with no help from my dealer's tech (who thought I would have to "drill" out the lock) or Scooterworks (who wouldn't lend me a key for an hour because I didn't buy the bike there...notwithstanding the 1500 I've spent on service and accessories in the last year) I got the pet carrier open.

Illnoise's suggestion of XXXXXXXXXXX did the trick.

Seriously folks everyone with a Blur should know and learn how to do it and everyone with a Blur should NOT put anything of value in there...I'm off to get my Givi topcase this weekend.

And my keys now reside on two seperate key chains so if I ever lose/lock/etc my key again I have a spare.

The worst few hours I've had in a while but it's over.

A topcase isn't much safer, if at all, it can be pried off pretty easily.

So SCOOTERWORKS actually told you any Blur key would work? If that's true, that's much scarier than the XXXXXXXXX trick!

Glad to hear it worked out, to be honest I didn't know if the XXXXXX trick would work, I'd just read somewhere that it might, ha. Thanks, guinea pig. :)

I know of some similar security "holes" in other models of scoots, but sometimes keep stuff in my pet carrier so will keep them to myself. I'll just say that these "tricks" or similar ones are not limited to Blurs and not limited to Genuines. ;)

Ya know, since the issue was resolved, perhaps it would be best to delete this thread completely so that this "trick" is limited to just those of us that saw the thread, and not readily available to any negative influences on the internet that may happen across it in the future...

Just a thought as a matter of security.

Just to be clear, Scooterworks did NOT confirm that the Blur key would work. They just wouldn't lend it to me to find out. Given the threads about the Buddy keys working to open the pet carrier, I just figured it was a safe bet the Blur keys would do the same. But I can't confirm it.

I'm torn about the XXXXXX trick. On one hand I agree we don't want scooter thieves knowing about it, but do they really troll around here looking for info. There are probably faster, easier ways to get into the pet carrier than XXXXXXX. But I also feel like owners SHOULD get that info. Obviously the dealers aren't telling them so it's up to us...I almost think it should be in the manual.

What does everyone else think??

I'm cool either way. We could leave the thread but delete the relevant information and if anyone else ever asks, we can PM them the solution after somehow making them prove they're a Blur owner.

I think maybe the Buddy thread you saw said that the TOPBOXES only have a few key patterns, I think the set locks are matched to the ignition key. I could be wrong though. We'll try it out sooner or later. I'm betting it doesn't work.

And, hey, yeah, dang, I cheated myself out of free records. And I just got a new turntable! I suck.

You are still welcome to drop by some time and we can check to see if the key DOES open the pet carrier, just for future reference. I'm sure I could rustle up some promos and/or give you a deal on some records/CDs. 'Specially if YOU brought some beers (or sodas, depending on the timing of your visit). :)

I'm fine with editing out the specifics of the post. Maybe just put that there is a way to open the pet carrier without having to call Roadside Assist, towing it to your dealer or drilling a hole in the ignition...PM the moderator for details.

I tried my wife's Buddy keys in my Blur.
The key fits into the lock fine, but won't turn left or right when pushed in, and won't open the pet carrier or gas cap.

I think it's Buddy keys work in other Buddys and MAYBE Blur Keys work in other Blurs, but it's definitely NOT Buddys in Blurs and vice versa. :)

Make sense?

Dirk, I was just thinking, if nothing else, you should edit your OP to conceal your place of business, no point in telling the world where there's a blur parked everyday.

Join the ChiScootEvents yahoogroup for events listings. It's moderated so you only get event listings and no chatter. Don't think there's anything big in town for a while, but people post improptu rides all the time. Slaughterhouse on Labor Day weekend is the big Chicago rally.

I just remembered this thread as I was doing some maintenance today and thought I'd try it out and take some photos. It worked for me, too, it's very quick and easy, so I actually just went back and deleted the details from my and dirk's posts, the more I think about it, that shouldn't be public knowledge.

If future generations lock their keys in their scooter and come across this thread, they can PM me and I can give 'em instructions, and photos, even, but I'll make them answer some Blur trivia questions first or something, ha.

I think we all now realize how un-secure the pet carrier is, and topboxes are probably LESS secure, so consider the risks when leaving valuables in either.

Yeah, I usually take my gold bars with me rather than trust locking them in the scoot. :D

I know that the key trick does NOT always work with a buddy.

I have 2 of them and found out that one will open both scoots, but when I tried it at the scooter shop it didn't open any more of them.

The other scoot will only open its own pet carrier not both.

The key trick does not work on the Blur either. I finally met up with Illnoise and we tried his key in mine and it didn't do a thing. So at least you don't have to worry about someone just sticking another Blur key in and popping open your pet carrier. Someone has to get his (or her hands) dirty with some tools to get it open which would be VERY obvious to anyone around.

You still might want to keep that GPS/Ipod/Gold bar with you or in a very sturdy locked topcase however.
