Insurance--How many have theft coverage?

Post by Eireann »

Just wondering how many out there have theft coverage, and what provider they use. I'm with Geico, and they told me they don't do theft coverage for my area (east side of LA) for motorcycles/scooters. The other company I checked with--the name escapes me--did have coverage, but it would have been almost $700 a year, which seemed totally outrageous to me. I went with Geico, but don't have theft. Anyone have similar experiences? If you do have theft coverage and are in an area considered high risk, who is your provider?

I have full coverage, including theft, for about $250 a year

I have full coverage (the same that I've got on my car) and it's $12 a month.

Who are your providers? I was in a rush to get my scooter insured, and apparently didn't shop around enough. My yearly rate without theft is $320 or thereabouts.

Sorry to hear about that absurd rate. I'm with Geico, and have full coverage, including comprehensive (which includes theft), uninsured motorist and collision, but I'm not in a high risk area, obviously - rural northern NM. My total annual premium is $320.

East LA sounds like it's gonna be a hard area to insure in.

My insurance company is USAA. It's kind of exclusive, you either have to have been in the military or one of your parents has to be a USAA member. They're awesome.

I actually go through USAA for everything else--renter's insurance, banking, etc. I decided not to go with them for scooter insurance because as I remember, they wanted to insure my scooter through another company and wanted the entire years' premium up front. It sounds like that was not your experience. I will explore them again next year when my insurance with Geico expires in November. It's worth it to pay up front if I can get better, cheaper coverage.

I'm with USAA thanks to my wife who was an Air Force Brat as she like to say. We have everything including homeowners, many cars, liability etc., so it makes a good combination/package deal. The most expensive part of adding the scooter was covering myself if I get hit by an uninsured driver.

My full coverage was around $230 per year for two riders. I also use USAA, but they actually don't provide motorcycle/scooter insurance. They have a deal w/ Progressive, so that is actually the company that insures the scooter. They do make you pay the year's cost up front. I likely could have shopped around for a better deal, but time is money. The coverage I bought has high limits and my wife and I are in married, with kids, and in our late 30's. I am sure those factors went into the rate. I was amazed they did not ask for details concerning prior motorcycle experience or recent MSF courses.

They told me that they don't do motorcycle insurance in some states but they do in California.

My brother lives in Oregon and couldn't get USAA to insure his motorcycle at all.

Check with your agent to see if the UM (uninsured/underinsured motorist) coverage on your other vehicles will cover you on the scooter; if so, and if you are happy with the amount of coverage, you can drop the UM coverage on the scooter and save some money while still being covered (although passengers may not be). Also, ask your agent if UM policies in your state "stack," that is, if you have more than one vehicle insured with the same company you get the benefit of all the UM policies if you are injured by an uninsured or underinsured motorist.

Thanks for the advice--but unfortunately, the Buddy is my sole vehicle right now. As a poor graduate student I can't afford to insure more than one vehicle (let alone the payments and gas). But I will ask about stacking with USAA, since my boyfriend insures with them as well. Previous poster is right that the uninsured coverage adds the most to the premium, though.

USAA doesn't do motorcycle/scooter insurance in Oklahoma. They referred me to Progressive.

Yeah, I have full coverage with Progressive (which includes theft)... very reasonable.

Although the real test comes once you actually have to file a claim (which hopefully won't be an issue for a loooong time).

I just got full coverage with Progressive, through my car carrier of Amica since they don't handle motorcycles. I had to pay all upfront, but reasonable at 180 a year, and definitely theft. You are covered in your garage or theft from home (I hope) under renters insurance, but scooters are too easy to steal while out in the world.

Some other thread discussed insurance. Since my homeowners/car and recently life insurance is through Allstate, but here in Nor Cal they don't have moto (My agent says in Oct/Nov that should change)

I asked him to look into the best coverage (including the kitchen sink!) with minimal deductible. He went as far to check about $200 vs $500 deduct and decided that there wasn't much difference in coverage vs taking more of my money...for me as a new rider (assuming I get my CA M Classification) on a Buddy Italia my quote was $575 a year

So I asked a few others here at work who ride motorcycles and a former coworker has a guy...I'm gonna call him later to get a quote but that just SEEMS really high! Again I asked for full coverage + kitchen sink on the quote but...still...

I checked with USAA and they no longer cover motorcyles or scooters.....they refer you to progressive and one other company I think...

I was in a hurry as well and went through American Family insurance which does my homeowners, so now I have a multi line discount as well..paying $178.00 for a year.. $250.00 deductable includes theft, uninsured motorists etc..etc..

also according to my agent american family is going to start offering discounts for people with good credit.....basicly using your credit score to determine your discount i think.....that is good news...

I did check with farmers after and they were offering slightly lower like $149.00 plus some small fee which brought it pretty close to what I am paying now but I believe it would have been not as good of coverage..I will stick with american family for now........they have treated me well over the years and I can never find anyone to beat there home owners insurance...probably because they do not insure homes in states where hurricanes hit every year..less claims........

will any of your agents adjust your rates for having covered parking or additional security (alarm, disc lock, etc)?

$107 a year, for full coverage, with theft, 250 deductible. And I live in a "bad" part of Cleveland with no garage.

State Farm rules for bike coverage. All of my full size motorcycles have also been inexpensive with them.

Got full coverage included in that is theft. $254 a year, drops to $204 once I pass the MSF course and get my full M class endorsement.

Don't know the company. It's what many of the riders in my office use. Not sure if they're just a brokerage firm or if they actually do their own.

Depending on the state and company, the more you insure (home/reneters, car, motorcycle, life...etc) with a company the more they "tend" to give you a break/discount.

With USAA it depends on what state you're in. They cover motorcycles in California.

We just picked up two Buddies and got insurance through Progressive and it covers theft. It cost $161 for both Buddies for the year.
