Confused about Stebel Horn

I was thinking of ordering the Stebel horn and did a search on related posts.

It looks like there was some disagreement on one or more of the tutorials that were given and now I can't figure out if the horn is safe to put in the Buddy or not.

There's the post in the "For all new owners" section that takes you instructions on Modern Vespa, but there's also:

Any comments on whether the electrical system can support the horn?

I've definitely felt you confusion for the longest time. Be assured though, the electrical system can and will handle it perfectly :) You just have to make sure you add the amp and relay that comes with the horn.

Hopefully one of the resident electrical geniuses here can feel you in a bit more.

Yeah, it seemed like some folks didn't install the amp and relay and that was where the disagreements came in...

Well the thing is if you remove the stock horn and hook the Stebel up it will work with out the amp and relay (tried it myself just to hear how the horn sounds). BUT just because it's working doesn't mean it's working safely (hence the arguing). So my advice is to hook it up the correct way (with amp and relay) and just avoid the possibility of future problems.

Just hook it up according to the directions that come with the horn. You will be fine. I've had mind in for a while, and everything is working properly.

Sorry we've confused you. The discussion was over whether the extra wiring (the relay and all that yada yada) was necessary. The answer is that that extra work will save you from burning up your horn switch and other electrics which are not designed to carry the extra current the Stebel requires. If you can find some of those Posi-Lock connectors that are mentioned in that other horn thread, they are great stuff which will make the job easier.

I wonder if the Modern Buddy folks should just get together and make a "Stebel-ize your Buddy" kit with the Posi-Lock parts and a DVD of the entire install process from start to beep. Would that have helped?

That would be too great! Let me know when the pre orders start :) A video definitely would help... A LOT ...lol

I just finished the install an hour ago, and I followed the instructions and used all the bits and pieces. I'm no electrical whiz, but the horn works great. The hardest part for me was mounting it, and it sounds like everyone has come up with their own solution for this.

Inside the packaging there was a small card warning that the relay must be used or you will fry your electrical system. I heeded that warning.

As a total noob, a dvd of a scooterist detailing things like the horn install to changing oil would be AWESOME!!!

Things like:
To add the Stebel horn or other horn you'll need
A. Your Buddy
B. These tools...list of sizes and what not
C. The horn

Then step by annoying step on how to do it would be again FREAKIN AWESOME!!!

I'd pay for that! Hell, I'd pay for a series of them!!! Horn upgrade, light modulator, Oil change...etc.

Paypal donations to keep the site going (Cover the cost of the blank DVD discs and shipping the rest go to the site fund). Just a suggestion.

In terms of electrical system supporting the horn, the Vespa & Buddy both have 12V systems and the Buddy actually recharges better than the older Vespa LXs. As has been said, follow directions & you'll be good!

ModernVespa did a Maintenance and Basic Mods workshop in NoCal a few months ago. Maybe we should do that! Who wants to come to LA to do it? :)

If anyone in the LA/SFV area plans on doing the install and has a better idea of how to do it, I may be able to borrow the sweet HD DV camera we have here at work and do a video. PM me!

Can you post pics of your wiring setup?
Negative ghostrider. I don't have the technology for that, but I can tell you that I very slowly and carefully read and followed the instructions. Have you tried to install it yet?

The Stebel install isn't hard, it's all about following the instructions. Use the tools they recommend (can be purchased at Radio Shack for about $10) and use all the hardware that comes with it - fuse, relay and all.

I've posted other suggestions about laying out the parts like in the diagram before, I still think that's your best help.
