Sweet "moped" justice for thieves in Boulder...

Boulder officers are investigating a string of moped thefts over the weekend that could be related, according to police records.

Police made two arrests in two moped thefts -- and recovered a third stolen moped -- over the weekend.

On Saturday, police pulled over Richard Grant, 36, a transient, near Broadway and Iris Avenue after an officer said the moped he was riding appeared to match the description of one that had been reported stolen.

Grant said he was borrowing the moped from a "Wayne," whom he had met at a warming center. Police impounded the moped and issued Grant a summons for driving under suspension and operating a motorized bicycle without a license before releasing him.

Police left a message with

Wayne Michael Schofield (Boulder County Sheriff's Office)
the registered owner of the moped, who said she had been at breakfast with her daughter earlier that day and then came back to her daughter's apartment to find the moped missing.
After a warrant was issued for his arrest on suspicion of theft by receiving, Grant was spotted and arrested Sunday near Arapahoe Avenue and 23rd Street.

Later that morning, police pulled over Wayne Michael Schofield, 20, also a transient, on suspicion of driving through a red light on a moped near Arapahoe Avenue and Ninth Street. The officer noticed the moped matched the description of another one that had been reported stolen Saturday night.

Schofield was arrested on suspicion of theft by receiving. He told officers he had bought the moped for $50 and did not realize it was stolen. The owner said she kept a spare key in the storage apron of the moped.

Investigators did not say if they believe Schofield is the "Wayne" that Grant had referred to, but detectives are looking into the possibility, said Kim Kobel, a spokeswoman for the Boulder Police Department.

A third stolen moped was recovered near Lee Hill Drive and Broadway on Sunday. Kobel said the number of stolen mopeds reported in one weekend was unusual.

Both Grant and Schofield remain in custody on $2,500 bond. Both are scheduled for a filing of charges today.

Kobel said moped owners should keep their mopeds in a garage or a well-lit area whenever possible. Owners should run a chain or a padlock through the wheel of the moped and anchor it to something immovable such as a bike rack, and owners should not keep spare keys on the moped.[/url]

Nice! get 'em!

In other news, I go to Boulder a couple times a week, right off the mall. If you wanna do lunch and talk shop sometime, lemme know. There are a few Longmont/Boulder people lurking here and there.
