day two as scooter commuter: WAY more entertaining!!

Post by dannyW »

So today I'm riding safely down a two lane road n Los Angeles called Highland.

A yellow speed bike flies by me zipping through double car traffic.

But, It doesn't matter because at the red light we end up at the front of traffic waiting for green.

This guy is "that guy" I've noticed on a speed bike.
1. Tank top
2. shorts
3 backpack
4. scratched up body on bike.

I nod at him, and he actually shook his head (almost in disgust), then revved his engine.

We waited for the light to change, and I noticed three cars trying to turn left in front of us, but this guy is still revving his engine.

As the light turned green for us, he didn't notice the third car turning left, and hit the gas. then he noticed the car. then he stalled his bike.

I didn't laugh, because I actually thought he was going to drive into the left turning vehicle.

.... wow....

cut to -

About two miles later,
I take off at a green light and I'm ahead of traffic on a pretty wide street, (4 lanes and a turning lane in the middle)

Some yahoo in a red maseratti, guns it out of a star bucks.... I initially saw him and some weird spidey sense went off, so I looked, then got right.

I'm lucky I did, because he fishtailed the car, and instead of slowing down to correct, he gassed it a dropped rubber all the way down the street and if I hadn't gotten to the right, and slowed down, he would have mutilated me!

He never even looked or saw me.

I still got to work fast.

God I love this scooter.

I commute through that same route; I'll probably see you around Hollywood at some point. (That is, if my Vespa ever gets out of the shop... bah...)

The stretch of Highland between the 101 and Hollywood is one of the most dangerous stretches in town and a lot of that has to do with idiots on other 2-wheeled vehicles. But there are also a lot of cars changing lanes without looking or signaling, cars running lights, occasional lane closures of stalled cars...

Anyway, I've seen several scoots and MCs get into trouble along this route, including a guy on a Vespa GTS taking a side mirror off a BMW and a sportbike getting rear-ended.

I've been commuting on my Italia for two weeks now and I'm absolutely loving it. My brain just fires differently when I'm on my buddy. Getting to and from work is an experience...not just a time to tune out and listen to music. The first time I rode it at night I came back to the house and told my wife (with a dumb grin on my face) that riding my Buddy was as close to flying as I've ever felt. It just sort of melts away until you feel like you're floating on air. I love it!

I work about three miles from home and my commute is mostly country roads, so it's a very relaxing ride for the most part. However the other day I ventured out further to return a movie to Blockbuster, and I was exposed to the sensation of driving past a dump truck carrying a load or what seemed to be gravel or sand. When it passed me some sandy dust flew onto me and it stung every inch of exposed skin...quite shocking. Other than that I haven't had any crazy things happen yet. Hopefully it stays that way.

But yeah... riding my Buddy is the highlight of my day.

Do people actually say this? Or are wise asses just making stuff up and putting it on Urban Dictionary? Ha.
