Curse you, sidestand! Brake lever down!

Post by skully93 »

So, I foolishly trusted the sidestand (on uneven ground, no less!) for the few moments it takes me to close my gate.

It dove over, and broke the rear brake lever. The same one I broke on NY day :P. Then THE GATE FELL OFF. Bad morning.

Anyway, it's a cheap part, and I replaced it last time. However it was a pain in the butt, which means I'm doing it wrong.

last time, I didn't take much of the headset apart, grew frustrated, then just muscled the cable out with some needlenose. Done.

I'm confident there is a 'correct' procedure, so I thought I'd ask before I did the front brake ride of shame to the shop :P.

Thanks!

Loosen the adjuster sleeve at the rear wheel.....or go so far as to remove the sleeve.
Remove the lever pivot bolt/locknut and just withdraw the cable with the lever enouph to disengage one from the other.
Disengage old/re engage new..a bit of grease on the barrel and pivot bolt won't hurt..... and reassemble.....then restore the rear brake adjustment.

First time you get it right it becomes one of those 'That's it?' deals.

Thanks, Robbie!

I did it before (I plan to buy stock in these brake levers, you should too :P) but figured knowing the right way would prove useful.

That was pretty much the reaction. The gate falling off (it is metal, 12' long, prolly weighs 200lbs) was really the kicker. Managed to put that back together.

I should have just not put it on the side stand for this particular scenario. it is inclined, etc. Stupid of me trying to save 2 seconds.

The shop probably just has a bag of rear brake levers for when I come in.
