Buddy rear drum brake - uneven, surging - fixed

Post by bradsarno »

My the rear brake on my 170i was feeling funny, like a brake drum that was out-of-round. When braking and especially when coming to a stop, it was not smooth and even, instead it was only braking well thru half of the wheel rotation. Also it didn't brake very strongly either. I talked to a mechanic and he said it was very unlikely that it was out of round and that maybe glazing was the issue.

So I took off the exhaust and bracket, removed the wheel, and could see in the drum that it had gotten kind of shiny in some places. Also the brake pads were a bit glossy in spots. So I got some very rough sandpaper and sanded the entire inside of the brake drum with the scratches going sideways, opposite the way the brakes drag on the drum. After really cleaning and scuffing it all up, cleaning it all out with alcohol, I put it all back together.

Now the rear brake is smooth and even and grips twice as well as before. I can now lock up the rear wheel if I choose, and before, I couldn't lock it up. So it was an easy fix. Not sure what caused the glazing, but a little bit of sandpaper was all it took.

How many miles on the scooter?
Do you tend to use the rear brakes a lot (such as slowing into a turn without the front brakes applied)?

Let us know if the glazing seems to come back. I would be interested to know if it's the terrain where you ride (hilly?) or your riding style or maybe something goofy with your pads.
.::I know the voices in my head aren't real, but man do they come up with some great ideas::.

Good questions. Scooter has about 2100 miles on it, just a baby. I'm a new owner, about 600 miles are mine. I kinda think it was doing it when I got it, but it did seem to worsen.

On straight stops, I do mostly front brake, or that 70/30 balance thing, but going into turns where it's subtle braking (sometimes just to show a brake light), I think I probably do ride the rear brake more while the throttle is also being worked simultaneously, but that's light stuff. I don't often do real hard braking. Climate and terrain here in St. Louis are pretty normal, not real hilly, no long, hot downhill brake riding, but lots of stop and go, mostly 30-40 mph zones around here.

I'll comment again if I observe it returning. I was really glad to get the brakes to where I could lock them up if I wanted to. Before the de-glazing, there was just no way to make them grab that hard.
