factory defect --blown engine

Was riding down the road and lost power with a lot of blue smoke. They found out that there was a crack in the engine and decided to install a new engine. I liked the scoot but haven't had a lot of time to ride it. Lot more to the story but that's about what happened. Merry Christmas everyone!

I think we would have to hear some more of that story before we knew what this really means. New bike - old bike? Low mileage - high mileage? Warranty - no warranty? Cracked what? Engine failed when? Previous problems? etc.?

It's a new motor. Dino oil for the fist couple cycles, then Motul synth.

Sorry you've got to go through break-in again, but good that you have a new 150 motor.

The impression is that sailboat had a Hooligan that ended up with a cracked crankcase (blown engine) and had it replaced on warranty. And then, the replacement also went south. This leaves two big question marks re the 170i.
If all this is fact, a known fact is that the 170i motor has been used in the Buddy for a long time in large deliveries with apparently no problems. So, I look for differences between the Buddy 170i and the Hooligan 170i. The only two things I see different is that the Hooligan 170i has an extended driveline case and no micron replaceable filter. Been trying to decide for my part whether to buy a new Buddy 170i or Hooligan. Am thinking that the longer heavier case bolted up to the base 170i crankcase may be a week point on the Hooligan engine and resulting in cracked engine cases. Or, less likely, no filter means trash in the oil. My guess is that Genuine didn't consider to redesign the crankcase and beef it up for the longer driveline loading. But until more info is forthcoming, I am going to go for the Buddy 170i. tried and proven.

. This thread is so confusing that you are pardoned for not being sure what it is telling you. If you go back to the previous thread posted by az_slynch, it sounds like there was only one new Hooligan. The engine was replaced under warranty several months ago. Now sailboat13 "just was wondering why no Hooligan news"?!?

News is, I really can't justify buying another new scooter anytime soon. If I could, I would likely get a Hooligan in green. Previous threads include generally favorable reviews, so the design is not a dud. Maybe Genuine should take a look at the Ruckus crowd and find a way to engage the zeitgeist of that culture with the Hooligan since it embodies elements that aren't far out of their wheelhouse.

I've seen plenty of roached Buddy, Super 8 and Agility motors at my local dealer. There's a similar thread where a Blur 220i grenaded its engine under strange circumstances. Sailboat's engine failure is more likely an outlier than a herald of a design flaw, especially when this engine type has now been under some form of development for a decade or more.

Bottom line, if you really want to know about the Hooligan? Get off your arse, visit your local Genuine dealer and ask for a test ride.

I, as everyone else, would love a paper filter on their hooligan, BUT look at how many bikes exist without them. The 250 Honda rebel, most dirt bikes, xr200/250 etc. I think it means changing the oil more often, but since it only holds a quart. I don't see the big deal.
I know several four stroke street bikes that have gone major miles with no paper filter. That issue, at least, would not keep me from buying one.
