Who's Crashed? [Crash Reports]
Quite a few crash reports for the still-fairly-new Buddy have been posted on the forum. This has made me kind of curious about who has crashed and what the circumstances and results have been. So, an informal, non-judgmental survey for those with crashed Buddies (or those who live with somone with a crashed Buddy), with my own answers in the following post.
1. Which model and displacement (CCs) scooter was crashed? Color?
2. Was the crash due to rider error? What time of day did it occur?
3. Could the crash have been avoided? What will you do differently next time?
4. Was the rider injured? What type of protective gear or clothing was the rider wearing?
5. What was the damage to the scooter?
6. Cost of repairs, if any?
7. How much (weeks, months, years) riding experience does the rider have? Does the rider have a motorcycle permit, license or neither?
8. Had the rider completed the MSF course?
9. Was the rider the scooter's owner?
10. How fast was the rider going?
11. How far was the rider from home?
[EDIT: Many questions have been altered or added since the initial post, so some of the subsequent posts may not have answers to all of them.]

7. License.
8. I'm ashamed to say no. Though I've recommended the course to others, I'd been delaying taking it until the wife was on her scoot and ready for the course so we could take it together. Then, of course, I totalled her scoot. Oops.

If you don't mind, I'm going to add another question to the list, but I think it's an important one.

I'll add new questions to the original list. If anyone wants to add new answers you can edit your existing post if you like. Thanks!lobsterman wrote:Can we add another two questions?
10. How fast were you going?
11. How far were you from home?
I am curious because I have heard that most crashes happen at relatively low speed and pretty close to home.

1. No, was clipped behind by an impatient cager while turning left. Around 10am.
2. Possibly... not too sure how though. Perhaps if I hadn't turned so quickly trying to get him off my tail.
4. Still have the bruises to show for it! That was it though.
5. Smashed left mirror, snapped brake lever, some body scratches.
6. 70$ and that included an alignment.
7. Permit
8. <.< -cough- Perhaps if the course were FREE...
9. Yup
10. Not really applicable, maybe 5 mph? It was in the middle of a turn into a gravel lot.
11. 40 minutes from home, however right there on my campus.

my wreck...How it happened
I was stopped at a red light and the light turned green, as I accelerated and hit a patch of oil on the road that was damp from a drizzle earlier in the day. As a result the scooter came out from underneath me. I had a helmt on and jacket so I was fine.
The scooter recieved very minimal damage because it slid on the kickstand and that kept the plastic body from actually touching the pavement.

Oh I hoped I would never post here but "Mr" peabody99 called me this afternoon to report a minor accident on his black buddy. He was driving in a parking lot at the University where he works . A car pulled into his path and was broad sided by the Buddy. The guy was apparently a real jerk, did not ask if the Mr was OK only "what were you doing?? " , treating him as if he were a hackey sack playing punk on a skate board as opposed to a middle aged licensed driver WITH THE RIGHT OF WAY. So the Mr. asked somewhat sarcastically, are YOU ok -and he said "yeah but my cars not!" Buddy had taken a big bite out of the side of the car!!! Mr Pea99 then said "you DO realize I have the right of way?" and the guy grumbled and left, oddly Buddy only had a scratch (to add to the one when one of those sensor guided parking lot sticks came down on him). I know he should have called security and made a report but when you get shaken but like that, there is no visable damage, and someone else is at fault but acts so unremorseful
it is hard to think on your feet. Anyway given what a jerk this guy was,am I evil for snickering that Buddy dispensed a bit of grass roots justice and put a big dent in the car?

has anyone else noticed that most of the incidents posted happened at a near-standstill, or while "practicing"?SteMer wrote:Has anyone else noticed the color of Buddy that received several votes as the fastest (sunset/orange - in a previous thread) is also currently leading in this category? Hmmmm. Just a simple observation.
and the correlation with the color, sunset, is no coincidence... there is just more power to keep under control...

Or, possibly that orange is simply the most popular color?SteMer wrote:Has anyone else noticed the color of Buddy that received several votes as the fastest (sunset/orange - in a previous thread) is also currently leading in this category? Hmmmm. Just a simple observation.
I also know of at least 3 other crashed pink Buddies which have not been reported here. I was actually expecting a high incidence of pink crashes, but maybe they're just keeping quiet!

Sorry to hear about the broken arm, pickupbear. Heal well!
It does look like orange seems to be either the most popular color or that you all are less inhibited about your scooter exploits. I wonder if the there's some connection between the color of your Buddy and your personality.
Just having fun trying to stir up a friendly rivalry between the colors.

Yeah, the "accidents close to home" statistic has always bugged me. Of course most occur closer to home; this is where most riding/driving occurs. No matter where you go, you have to end up there. Unfortunately, a lot of people seem to interpret this as meaning that riders are either more accident prone close to home or, even worse, that they can rest easy five miles from their house because the likelihood of getting in accident has magically been reduced.

Doubtful since he's a guy who crashed a pink buddy (and I would beat the crap out of him if he even suggested crashing was a girl thing). No, he's referring to the previous thread where there was a rash of several pink buddy crashes in the span of a couple of weeks.dahuffy wrote:What would make you say that....because they're most likely driven by women ?ericalm wrote:I also know of at least 3 other crashed pink Buddies which have not been reported here. 1. Which Buddy (50/125) was crashed? Color? 125 Pink
2. Was the crash due to rider error? What time of day did it occur? No some idiot woman ran a stop sign while I was going to work at about 8:45am.
3. Could the crash have been avoided? I avoided physically hitting her car by laying the bike down.
4. Was the rider injured? Unfortunately when I laid the bike down I laid it on my knee. I am currently lying here with multiple fractures in my tibia, which required surgery. I now have a plate and nine screws in my leg. I am completely non weightbearing for at least another four weeks. The doctor says it will be three to six months before I walk normally again.
5. What was the damage to the Buddy? Nope it landed on top of me.
6. Cost of repairs, if any? Zero
7. Does the rider have a motorcycle permit, license or neiher? I had a permit, which will have expired by the time I can ride again.
8. Had the rider completed the MSF course? I took a scooter safety course which isnt as long or expensive as the MSF.
9. Was the rider the scooter's owner? Yup
10. How fast was the rider going? According to the accident report I was doing 25. I really dont remember.
11. How far was the rider from home? Less than a mile.

That's surprising that folks take it that way... for me it reminds me that even if I'm just going a few minutes away I need to be wearing appropriate gear. I've seen a lot of posts in the various helmet discussions (here and on modern vespa) where folks say "I wear a helmet only if I'm going on a long trip" which seems scary to me. My last accident (in my car) was less than 100 FEET from my house (telephone pole jumped out at me!) so I buckle up always.ericalm wrote:Unfortunately, a lot of people seem to interpret this as meaning that riders are either more accident prone close to home or, even worse, that they can rest easy five miles from their house because the likelihood of getting in accident has magically been reduced.

man you wont catch me going anywhere without a helmet, although i dont always wear a jacket. I just figure, I don't have impressive healthcare and I have the means to prevention, so I think, how much is my head worth, yanno?

wow sorry to hear about this accident. It is amazing how bad you can get messed up in a fairly low speed crash. Take care and heres to a speedy recoveryBlackeyes24 wrote:1. Which Buddy (50/125) was crashed? Color? 125 Pink

Thanks. I think I went down right on my knee which is probably how I got so messed up. I know the bike landed on me because the first thing I remember is screaming "Get the bike off my leg!" Then I started screaming at the EMT about not having health insurance as if they were going to stop treating me because I couldnt pay. Its amazing what you think of as you are lying in the middle of the road with blinding pain in your knee. I also landed on my elbow but thankfully it wasnt broken. My helmet did its job there is a big scrape along the side of it but my head is as good as it ever was. Got the hospital bills today. They are scary!
I miss riding but then I miss walking too. Oh well. There is a saying that there are two catagories of motorcycle riders: Those who have fallen and those who will fall. I am now part of the "have fallen" category. Hopefully it was the first and last time.
Apparently the officers at the scene at least got a little amusement out of the accident. One of South Florida's men in blue was kind enough to ride my little pink scooter home for me instead of making me pay to have it towed. I am sure the site of a big cop in bermuda shorts on a pink scooter must have been a hoot.

Zikes. no insurance. this may help people that do not have medical insurance to think about getting injury coverage through the scooter insurance policy...it adds a couple hundred a year but may be worth it! see if the hospital social worker can help you access programs that are on a sliding scale to settle your bill. I remember I once lost track of an unpaid $10 medical bill and it went on my credit report...still shows up nearly 15 years later...

I was saving up for the scooter insurance, working extra hours at work etc, but I didnt have enough yet. Now all that money has gone to pay bills and I have to start all over again. I was supposed to have health insurance by September but my office keeps putting it off. The hospital did lower the bill some now I just need to give the bills to my attorney and wait to hear about the other woman's insurance.

Too important an issue to worry about thread hijacking. My daughter in south Florida is going through a similar situation except her car was hit by a guy with no insurance. My daughter is going the attorney route to avoid any out of pocket expenses. If this stop sign running woman who caused the accident has insurance, you shouldn't be responsible for any out of pocket expenses. Her insurance should cover it all. If not, find a lawyer that will handle the case for a percentage of the final award.Blackeyes24 wrote:I was saving up for the scooter insurance, working extra hours at work etc, but I didnt have enough yet. You were the victim here and you've put up with enough already. You don't deserve any financial burden on top of the physical pain you've already experienced.

I work for a law firm and oneof the attorney's there has agreed to represent me at less than the normal personal injury fee. We are waiting to hear back from her insurance company to find out exactly how much coverage she has. Once we know that my attorney will let me know what I should do next. South Florida drivers suck! In the mean time I go to physical therapy and hope to be walking and riding again as soon as possible.

Seems to me a good number of south Florida drivers are insane! Good to hear about your law firm connection, my daughter's situation is similar. Hopefully, her insurance company covers everything (was she ticketed?). If not, I would think that the mere threat of a suit would have her insurance company ready to settle out of court. Good luck!Blackeyes24 wrote:I work for a law firm and oneof the attorney's there has agreed to represent me at less than the normal personal injury fee. I get to brag/confess to being unlucky.
I hit the ground taking my endorsement test, courtesy of a bit of sand and loose gravel in near the exit of the speedy curve portion of the test. Front tire lost traction and lowside on the sand and gravel.
Cosmetic damage only, wounded pride, a bruise on the ribcage, no damage to the jacket, gloves or helmet (which didn't even hit the ground).
The person administering the test apologized about the gravel and sand, and they brought out some brooms to clean ip up right after my incident. She did however think that I had excellent crash awareness in protecting myself .
For what it's worth though, apparently the spot I went down claimed a Harley earlier in the say, and the gravel was in fact oil absorbtion stuff (glorified kitty litter) and they rescheduled my exam for next week.

She was reluctantly wearing a helmet at the time. When she felt her head hit the ground she lost her reluctance. She was very lucky as she landed on grass and was going pretty slow.
Good lesson learned without serious physical harm.

I'm not much for litigation but this is an instance where an atty it most benefitial. OK, I believe karma is as simple as playing the odds, so data/facts are important to me. that's why I wanted to bring this post back to the front. I'm keeping up mainly with #8. So far, I think, 13 of 16 crashes took place before the rider took the BRC.
