Only if you're riding like crazy would I change my oil every 3 weeks... The intervew is a little misleading and you should go by the manufacturer suggested schedule...

The mfg sugested octane rating is a bit misleading as most of the oriental
nabufacturers use a slightly different octane rating. I use regular 87 oct treated with Stabil. I change my oil every 1000 miles, tranny oil every 2000
miles.Perhaps this dealer is trying to drum up business. The scoots she was
showing price wise I would surmise are Chinese mfg, nothing wrong with that
and I have owned Chinese scoots that gave good service.
If nothing else this is a good plug for scooter use.

That is true too. I had 2 Tanks, a 150 and a 250 that were pretty good but I have an Icky Bear trike that was a bad example of Chinese work. Once we got the bugs out of it I cancelled the insurance and tag registration and use
it here at my place to get around and to the mail box!!! :P

I worked for a scooter dealer and the similarities to this dealer interview are uncanny. They also recommended ridiculous service intervals no doubt inspired by financial gain and not what the manufacturers recommend.

In cases like this don't patronize the dealer and spread the word as to why. :x

you got a Kymco and a Vespa gt, I'm sure you'll get by on about 2000 mile intervals. Use synthetic oil. Keep the tires topped off, swap out the plug about annually, change the gear oil about every 7,000. That should be the basics. I'm no expert, that's just how I roll. 500 mile oil changes is overkill. Perhaps on a no-name china scoot, they might need that frequent maintenance. She doesn't seem very reputable, their shop doesn't even have a website. What business doesn't have a website these days... seriously?!

"Expert" my ass.

1. The only scooters you may need to change oil in that frequently are generic Chinese GY6s. I know someone who got 20K out of one by changing his oil every 500 miles. Good for him, but for many that would negate the savings of buying a $1,000 scooter. "Use motorcycle oil." Jeezus.

2. Octane has nothing to do with the quality of the gasoline. See: viewtopic.php?t=1015#11071

The shop is no longer in business. I have to wonder if it's because they offered 5 years of free oil changes every 500 miles. They would be changing my oil every few weeks for 5 years.

I would have changed my oil at the end of every riding day last summer if I kept this schedule!

Doing an oil change every 500 miles would mean making appointments for two pit stops along the way on each of my 1-week trips. Except of course that I ride a 2-stroke, and I get an "oil change" (i.e. I refill the reservoir) only once per trip. :)

Wow, yeah, ignore that video. :wha:

1. Octane rating denotes the gasoline's combustability, not quality.

2. Manufacturer's recommendations for oil changes are fine, as with any vehicle. Problems only otherwise arise when the oil level gets too low.

Even that reporter thought high octane gas was synonymous with high quality gas.
