Modern Buddy

What type of gas is recommended for a 2008 Buddy 50? I've been using Premium (I bought it used and I'm only one tank in)

87 octane

Run it on reg.

Interesting, does it hurt it to run it on Premium? Like make the engine run too hot or something?

It won't hurt it. It's just a waste of $. I have heard from someone premium runs slightly hotter. I'm not sure if that's true.

I think what 2t oil you use is more important. I recommend using a full synthetic. I'm a Motul guy so I suggest Motul710. Any good synth designed for scooters/MCs will be fine though.

Just to throw this out there; Bonegirl mentioned that she always used premium gas in her Buddy because her husband noticed that her engine's head and piston stayed much cleaner vs using regular gas.

Bonegirl's scoot was a 125 4 stroke vs our discussion is a Buddy 50 2 stroke. Maybe when you have a 2 stroke that has an oil mix, Octane responds differently because the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber will burn significantly different if you vary octane. A 4 stroke is more likely to be more sensitive to compression ratio. The 2 stroke with a fuel oil mix may need a lower compression ratio so that the lube will separate out of the mix in order to lube the piston rings more effectively. Just a thought.

I read her posts also. I'm a bit torn, honestly. I would love to hear from experienced mechanics on this forum about this.

If one were to believe all of the gas producers claims, I would assume that premium gas has more cleansing ingredients thereby helping keep engines cleaner. Before my Blur engine seized up, I used mainly regular gas and both the head and piston were covered in black carbon deposits. Once I get my engine running again, I'll be using only premium because of the higher compression ratio. Maybe (if I remember) when I get a couple of thousand miles on the rebuilt engine, I'll pull the head and have a look see, just out of curiosity.

I would be very interested to know the results. The skeptic in me has serious doubts, but Bonegirl(and husband) are a reliable source....so we will see.

40,000 4Tengine miles is 80,000 2Tengine miles because 2T equals twice as many combustion cycles.

I knew they didn't last as long but I wasn't looking at it like that. It's easier to rebuild a 2t though.

Mines light blue... But I'm hoping to change the color soon. I would rather a matte black or dark gray. Or I might end up buying a buddy riot 125 in the next couple months and keeping my current Buddy 50 for my wife. Here's a pic (it was taken at night, so not the best quality photo). I'll post some more pics another day.
