Broke belt = WOT

Post by BlackCat50 »

The other day I was going to work and broke a belt. I was crusing at wide open throttle. As normal, I lost forward acceleration and coasted to a stop. Now here is what has me puzzled. When the belt broke, the throttle was still wide open (yes I closed the throttle handle). As I was slowing, I hit the kill swith but it still ran wide open. When I had stopped, I cut the ignition off and pulled the key out...still running wide open. I finally reached up and twisted the throttle. That stopped the engine.

Any educated ideas on why the kill swith or ignition key would not stop the motor?

i wonder if something internal broke with the sudden change of having the belt break and the engine not having any resistance at WOT.

Ya, I'd have the variator side engine seal checked. It will be apparent as it won't run at all if it's really torn up. But it will be easier to just inspect it when you change the belt. Though the change of sudden no resistance could have something to do with it just getting to spin so fast it was firing by pure heat (diesel) rather than by spark. Some airleaks are like that, but maybe it could happen with the sudden loss of resistance as well.

I don't know anything about the engine not stopping, but I do have a recommendation. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to a kevlar belt. They can withstand more abuse than a standard belt. I have one that I have tortured and it runs fine.

it could be that with the colder tempuratures you are running lean, heating up the spark plug enough to keep the engine running even without spark. kinda like a diesel engine. how far north are you? i am in Florida so its not as cold here as other areas which would make the problem worse

i have noticed when i shut my scooter off lately that it sputters a bit, but it doesnt keep running. normally a little before i shut it off, i am forced to ride slow which would cool it down and make my problem not as bad as it would be if i shut it down at full throttle
