new handlebars on a rattler.
So i want to put some motocross bars on my rattler and i was wondering if anyone has done this before. I assume it should be fairly simple switch out with the minor exception of the turn signal brackets. Does anyone have advice or tips on how to do this mod.
I am wanting to gain a little more knee clearance and a little narrower (I come from a BMX background) and they have 7/8 bars in any size and color you want for about 17 bucks.
Thanks

never looked into it - but would PowerMadd risers work to raise the height, instead of re-assembling everything?

That 4-bolt pattern is specific to snowmobiles, you would have to buy it to find out of it matched up to the rat. Those type of risers also push the bars closer to the rider since the angle isn't adjustable. It's looks like it might work since the entire middle is an open slot for the bolts
You would be better off with something like this

Bar risers and new handlebars
As I mentioned on the other Rattler forum, I wasn't too pleased with the bar position and seating position of my '07 Rattler. First thing I did was shave the seat flat so there is no more step between the rider area and the passenger area.I believe the '08 and later Rattlers already have their seats flat. That's when I noticed that sitting farther back, my elbows weren't bent at over a 90 degree angle. Riding position is much improved. I decided to look into handlebars and risers. Maybe I could push the bars forward a bit. Found what I was looking for.... albiet a bit pricey. Genmar makes 1" risers that also pull back 1 3/8". Using these risers mounted backwards, I was able to push the handlebars forward. Instead of going with MX style bars, I decided to go with cafe style drop bars. I love the look and the sporty seating position. I can now lean the bike with much more confidence. At the same time, I also installed a set of dual-star mirrors and Pro Grip Rally Grips 714. These grips are my favorite hand grips on any type of motorcycle. Damn comfy.
A couple of notes:
Any 7/8 handlebar will work.
Any 7/8" motorcycle type grip will work. Motorcycle grips are usually thinner for the throttle side (to accomodate the throttle tube).
The stock bar ends will not work since the factory handlebars are threaded. Stock bar ends are a joke anyways. Get some heavyweight bar ends to help dampend vibrations if you want bar ends.
The stock bars have holes drilled into them to position the two switch housings. You'll need to drill holes into your new handlebars.
The stock lower clamp is machined to fit the Speedo mount. I tried to fit the speedo mount on the upper part of the genmar riser.... bar is too loose. Either I grind a bit off the genmar clamp or I use the lower mount. Using the lower mount does not leave enough room to mount the speedo in its factory mount. I used just the upper bolt to mount the speedo using the speedo's lower bolt hole. I'll need to figure out something better.... either fab up a mount, relocate the speedo or something else.... I kinda like a clean handlebar area so maybe i'll relocate the speedo. Not sure yet.

Big guys should go with the protaper kits on fleabay that include the bars, conversion clamps, grips, pad and grip glue for $99.00 in the KX high bend. No affliation, just sayin'
DO NOT DRILL HOLES IN THE BARS FOR THE SWITCH GEAR!!! Simply introduce the lil pegs to Mr. Dremel. Now you can adjust your switch gears in any position you fancy.

I thought about doing that but considering that the rear brake lever is part of that assembly, I assumed that there might not be enough friction to hold the assembly in place. So, you have done this and friction hold is enough? If thats the case, i'll grind off the nubs so I can freely adjust the assembly.bykpimp wrote:DO NOT DRILL HOLES IN THE BARS FOR THE SWITCH GEAR!!! bykpimp is right on. KX high bend protaper with kit from fleebay installed. Easy on, filed off the nubs and holds tight. Looks and feels great. My knees have breathing room now. Here's a pic.
