Broke the plastic 'scoop' guard?

Post by slurugger »

So this morning I was taking the cover off my 125cc Buddy and caught the black plastic cover on the right side near the kick stand. It's the 'scoop' cover looking piece. Well it broke off. What is this for? Is the cover necessary. Will riding without it damage my scoot? What is the point of this cover? Additional air intake? I thought the main air intake/filter was on the left side?

Thanks!

That's the cooling shroud for the CVT. It won't really hurt anything, but it is there to keep debris out of the CVT (which will hurt your CVT. Unless you feel like doing some fabrication to make sure there's at least a screen or something, I'd try to get a replacement.

The chances of something flying in there aren't high, but they do exist.

If the part with the filter is still in there, you shouldn't have anything to worry about though. Post a pic for confirmation?

Good lord how hard were pulling that cover?!

If you are talking about the fan cover, people go without them all the time. You can get a new one tho if you want...
I could only find fancy ones on ebay, about 16 bucks was the cheapest one I saw. $$$

Well only the plastic came off. I can see what looks like a spinning fan. I will snap pix and attach.

well only one screw was left holding it on. The other two broke a while back when chuck norris accidentally round-house kicked the cover when he got on. I was glad that was the only damage, could have been much, much worse.

Which side of the bike is this on? I thought from your original post you said it was right next to the kickstand (left side of the bike). You could be seeing the variator spinning, but I'd think it'd be pretty dark in there...

Nevermind, I mis-read the kickstand part...

That's the cooling fan shroud. No real harm in letting that ride without the shroud, assuming that there's no loose or broken plastic bits that could get pushed into the fan.

That's what I thought it was, the fan cover... The part in front of the exhaust (mine has the sticker). Right?

I have the same problem. The plastic cover is only attached by one screw. When I ride I can hear a definite rattle. Wasn't sure if it was crucial to replace or could I go a few days before I found another one. $16 bucks isn't bad but having it ship here may take some time and I would like to continue riding till then. Thanks for the advice.

Part is worthless and unattractive, take it completely off and put the screws back in place. Fan actually works a bit better in my opinion.

OK ScooterTrash. I'll yield to your expertise and take it off. My foot keeps hitting it anyway.

I'm not sure how your foot could be hitting it, I don't think I've ever really touched that cover aside from putting the sticker on...

Maybe you are getting on on the wrong side?

No..... I'm looking at ScooterTrashes pic and that's the right area. But remember, I'm new and only have had the scooter for a day. I'm probably not picking up my feet quick enough when I take off. I will adjust that on todays group ride.

Did you go down to Motorsport and ask if they have any in stock? They had had my pink panel right there when all I wanted to do was ask how much it would be.

Just took the guard off. Will take it for a test spin. There has been a rattling I think was coming from it when I hit about 25mph because it was cracked and not securely fastened. Hopefully that will have fixed it.

I took the guard off and don't have a problem hitting it anymore. I still feel and here that vibration and rattle though. Since I'm not familiar wit scooters, I'm going to take it down the the dealership tomorrow and have them test drive it. The scooter looks undamaged but I will feel better having a pro check it out before I decided to buy it. Either way, I have got the bug and going to buy a scooter. I even met a neighbor I have seen for years but have never spoken to. He has a scooter also and we're going to plan a ride soon. Need to start a thread about scooters bringing people together.

Actually, the scooter belongs to a very good friend of mine. He bought it in Oct. 08' but it's an 09. He rode it for a bit (500 miles worth) and decided he didn't want it after all and is planning on selling it......... I know, go figure! Anyway, the cover was already broken by him when I borrowed it. He's planning on replacing it though and knows I took it off completely rather than have it hang on by one screw. Just seemed the wisest thing to do in the meantime. At least I hope I did the right thing.

I missed this question... My DL says I'm 5'4", but in reality about 5'3". I can't flat foot the buddy, but I don't think it's necessary, I just lean to one side or the other and keep one foot on the floorboard.

My hubby (who is 6'1", by the way) has cracked his cover off, too. We were trying to figure out what had happened, but it looks like he just caught it with his foot during takeoff.

I wondered why that scoop was there. My old Chinese scoot didn't have the scoop and did just fine. The Buddy has sucked up TWO plastic bags from the road.

On a second look the ones on ebay are for generic GY6 engines, which it appears the screws will not line up. :?

You may have to give your dealer a call or I think you can call ScooterWorks directly.

Well good reason to check under your buddy from time to time. Found this thread during a search.

my Buddy sucked up a plastic bag under this cover, and now the bag actually appears to be partly melted on to the fan center itself...

This side goes into the CVT? (Right side of the scooter, opposite the kickstand.) Krusty's and ST pics show the correct side that I am talking about.

I yanked most of the bag out of there but I guess I am thinking I should pull of the cover completely to get the bag all the way out?

If I am finding the right parts diagram looks like just 4 screws after I get the offending cover off?

Scoot runs just fine now BTW, but will take any input!

Bummer as it is a great day for a ride!!!!

Cruddy cell phone pic attached.

That cover is a fan cover for cooling the generator, http://www.modernbuddy.com/pdf/BUDDY_125_PARTS_FIG.pdf ; (go to E8 ) reference parts numbers here: http://www.modernbuddy.com/pdf/BUDDY_12 ... ATALOG.xls (note; its E-9, not E-8 ) some paid engineer determined the cover should be there; he might be wrong but chances are he is not.
But, then, more than most likely, it will run fine until a replacement is located

not sure why my eights are turning into faces - whatever the face is actually an eight

[I edited your post so the 8s wouldn't turn into faces. It's doing that because 8 and ) makes the 8) emoticon. - polianarchy]

many scoots don't have them. the 4 stroke buddys have them but the 2 stroke ones and the rattlers don't, go figure. the faster you run your scooter the more heat is produced. the scoop tries to pick up more air. if you run WOT all the time its prob a good idea. if not your ok. although the buddys scoop looks like it points straight down.

Actually I believe its to keep water and debris out, not to catch air. After all, its pointed down.

Could be. All of the aftermarket ones claim amazing increase in cooling ability. But scooters run fine without it. If your motor runs that hot then liquid cool is prob needed not more air.
