You Know Your Buddy Is A Cool Scooter When...

Post by San Francisco »

Hot off the press:

I parked my Buddy Italia out in front of my place. As I was parking it on
the sidewalk this couple was walking past.

They were both staring at The Godfatherette. I pretended not to notice.

As they were walking by I heard the guy tell her "Boy that's a nice
restoration."

As they walked past she turned her head and saw the new vehicle paper
over the license plate and told him "No, that's a new scooter."

He said "It's a new scooter?" She said "Yes, look."

He then said "Boy that's nice, I wonder what kind it is." [I had debadged
the scooter this afternoon, so no way to tell it's a Buddy].

I then went indoors smiling under my helmet. :D

I think I already posted elsewhere that this was essentially my first impression of the SI in the flesh. I was riding through Denver's Highlands and saw two scoots parked at the curb. I thought to myself, "nice vintage bikes." Then, as I was passing them, I realized that one was a vintage scoot but the other was an SI. Almost turned around to ride by for a better look.

Then, about a week ago, I finally saw one parked while I was walking. The SI may be one of the coolest looking scoots out there. Much better in person than in photos.

I get so many looks and questions about my Buddy that I carry postcards with me from Metro Scooter here in Cincinnati. It's basically a Buddy postcard with the scooter dealer's name on it. Folks are very appreciative when I hand them a card about my scoot.

I don't know about the SI, but with standard Buddys just pick at one end of the badge to start lifting it. Once you have enough to grip, they just peel off. They also retain some of their stickiness so, if you get one off and it stays whole, you can use it to badge something else. I got one of mine off intact and it now graces my 20 inch i-Mac.

My Buddy 125 badges are on the side of the freezer in the garage. Baffled my wife to be sure.

Yes, that is my scooter.
Yes, I wear a helmet and a FIRSTGEAR armored jacket.

I took pictures of the debadging process so to post a "how to."

Look for the thread, I'll post it tonight.

It is in fact an easy process, but also easy to screw up [mostly when taking the glue residue off the Buddy].

After pic below, I left on the SI badge:

WOW... the Dealer should be giving you a commission. :D

Write your name on those cards!

Best way to get the badges off it to hit them with a hair dryer. Loosens up the glue and they peel right off without leaving a mark!

You know your Buddy is cool when...

...you have to spend almost as much as the price of the scooter itself on anti-theft security...lol.

The Buddy really does get a lot of compliments, sometimes from people you would have never guessed too. Some people still look at it (and scooters in general) as a toy until you tell them that it gets upwards of 65mph and 85mpg. Their tone completely changes then 8)

This one overly excited guy actually came up to me and says "Man I thought scooters were kinda sissy but this is one cool bike! I mean that's not sissy at all! I didn't know they made scooters like this." (He threw a bunch of other colorful words in there too that the forum won't allow me to use) I just choose to leave that one alone and take the compliment from it.

You neglected to mention that he stated "Geez, man, it sounds like it has some real balls too". :P I thought this whole exchange was funny, especially considering the fact I was sitting on it the whole duration of his "compliment". Yup, Skeeter is one bad mamma jamma 8)
