What are your plans for Future Mods?

Post by Corsair »

What mods/accessories do you plan on adding to your Buddy?

-------

Right now here's my plan/wish list:
Re-Wire Turn Signals (thanks for posting that guide by the way)
Stebel Nautilus Compact Motorcycle Air Horn (thanks for the heads up on that one too)
Performance Pipe
Cylinder Kit
Upgrade Variator and Rollers
Reflective Wheel Stripes
Paint (body, rims, forks)
Underbody & Wheel Well LEDs
Chrome Rear Rack
Saddle Bags
Top Case (still trying to decide which one)
Add Clock
Possibly Add Foot Pegs
Possibly Change Mirrors (or at least extenders)
Gorilla Alarm with 2-Way Paging System
License Plate Helmet Lock
ATC2K Waterproof ActionCamera
GPS (Garmin 60CX is looking pretty good)

Now all I need is a Buddy... hey, one step at a time

FYI-

There are two helmet locks built into the seat. I don't know if they are as secure as an aftermarket lock, but they are very convenient.

That's a nice and pretty complete list Corsair. Ditto on most of it.

For now I am getting the Performance Pipe, plus the front and rear racks.

About the only other things you could do would be a windshield and to change or cover the seat.

Corsair, Dowco makes some very inexpensive sport saddlebags that fit a Buddy very well...you can order them out of Cycle World or Motorcyclist for $59.99. Encore Performance in Prescott had some in stock today (for $89.00!!) and I tried them on my scoot. Very nice! They compliment the lines and also are a good size.

I personally am trying to retrofit my Buddy with a Warp Core Generator and a dual Flux Capacitor set up. One is to power the photon torpedoes.

I thought about this too but opted instead for an Infinite Improbability Drive.

I already replaced the bulbs in the OEM front and rear turn signals and wired the OEM front turn signals to work with the DOT signals. I had a Prima windscreen installed. I moved the DOT signals to the headset like the '07 Buddy.

I figure front and rear carriers, maybe some paint. I'm thinking YELLOW! No, not really.

I'm seriously considering a headlight modulator and maybe a brake light modulator.

[Edited to catch up.]

Here's what I have done:

Re-Wire Turn Signals
Clock
Top Case
Passenger Foot Pegs

What still needs to be done:

Windshield
Different Horn - Fiamm? Air horn? Don't know yet.
Performance Pipe (in two years)
Reflective Stripes
Chrome (folding?) Rear Rack - LX modified rack
running lights
seat cover - though I really like the grey seat...

Things I have, but am still working with:

Helmet holder
Saddle Bags
cup holder

I'm sure this list will grow as I see other things that I like.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA now that's classic! Hey Keys, any chance you have a link to the saddlebags? Oh, and GT, be careful of those IIDs... things tend to get a bit... weird ...lol

PasadenaSue, what did you end up doing for a clock solution? (got any pics?) I was thinking of getting these foot pegs:

Sure, Corsair...they are at www.chaparralmotorsports.com . When you go to the site, type "Dowco" in the search bar and it will take you right to where you want to go. The standard bags ($52.99...sorry, I had the price wrong before) are at the bottom of the page and the deluxe series ($68.99) is on the following page. They have an entire series of bags in each type; the saddlebag set, two types of tank bags and a tail bag. Happy shopping!

Corsair -

I did the cheapo clock from the auto parts store. It cost all of $0.49. Must have been on sale! It's small but I can read the time when I am riding. (I'll have to borrow a camera to get pics.) I put it at 2 o'clock from the ignition. That way it's protected a bit from the elements.

El Cheapo works for me :D keep me updated once you post pics.

Keys, thanks for the links. Lojical1 liked the bags so we may be getting them for her scoot soon. Right now we're focusing on security (this scooter is WAY too nice) and all the "cheapo"/DIY/close to free mods (hey I'm still saving for my scooter...lol).

The next mod we're planning to do is getting the louder horn. Yeah, the stock horn is a definite No-Go. Especially here, where people pay NO attention or just don't care when driving. After that we're going to add reflective tire stripes and white walls by painting the stock tires with tire paint. I'd love to get the auxiliary gas tank, but that's another budget for another day (maybe once we both have scooters and start taking longer trips).

Thanks again everyone. Man it feels good to be working on the scooter with my own two hands. Both Lojical1 and I are really getting into it. Somehow it makes the scooter ("Skeeter") feel more valuable and special.

I posted this once before, but it is worth posting again. It takes a little work, but may be worth it. Remove your wheels and tires. Take the tires off the rims. Paint the rims whatever color you want...black, body color...I dunno. Paint the outside rim of the wheel white...however wide you want your "whitewalls". Remount everything...keeping your safer tubeless tires and PRESTO! The appearance of whitewalls with the safety of the tubeless tires! Cheap, too...except for your time.

Using both signals simultaneously makes you more visible (and looks pretty cool). Also some people prefer the look of using just the original signals so they take the DOT lights off completely.

Check It: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hP4F-ZM3uM

That's one way to do it. You can also mod them like this (which is the way I want to mod mine): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu8rKy2mzz8

On my black/silver Buddy 50
Done so far:

Debadged front panel
Native-American medicine wheel decal on front (red)
Installed brake light modulator
Wired both front turn signals together
Moved DOTs off bracket - directly attached to headset now
Chrome rack
Black topcase (not Buddy - something called ERGO my dealer had - stout box)

To do list in no particular order:

Rig additional brake/running lights on topcase
Make back pad for topcase
Change brake/rear turn signals to brighter bulbs (maybe LEDs)
Halogen headlight
Additional headlight(s) (JC Whitney) wired to headlight switch mounted on bracket attached to the central screw on the front panel
Stebel air horn
Install fold out passenger footpegs (JC Whitney) still working on fabrication ideas for mounting these to the rear screw on the existing silver footplate
Paint silver footplate flat black
Add red reflective 3/4" pinstripe tape on bottom panels and front fender for a black/silver/red color scheme
Remove front fork reflectors - wrap or stripe fork with red reflective tape
Trim about 6 inches off the rear fender

I'm not considering performance mods even though I now wish I'd bought the 125. I've ridden a 50cc my dealer kitted up to 70cc. The slight performance boost didn't seem worth the bucks. I've got the same thought on messing with rollers and weights or adding a pipe, particularly since I'd be off into the land of rejetting the carbs. The Buddy 50 works great for what it is. I'll save my bucks for a bigger scoot later.

so i was seriously pondering what i needed to do to get my scooter to less like twharton's... i thought about flames, or even argyle.. but in the end i decided on a much more personal (and likely more pricy) option: having animals painted on it! i would likely remove the front basket just to inrease the available surface area to be painted. so far the animals i'd like on it would be:

rat -- left handlebar (left of speedometer)
cuttlefish -- the front wheel cover
pointing monkey from family guy
manatee
platypus
ferret
squid

so far i think that may be all i'd have room for. I'd like to get a seatcover of some variety. maybe in another year or two i'd want to add a pair of speakers to hook up to my ipod... maybe... it also just occured to me it'd be interesting if i could have a picture engraved on my windshield.. less obstructive than a huge sticker.

any of you KS guys/ chicks know of a place that would be able to do this kind of paintwork?

I finally borrowed a camera so here are my mods so far:

ET4 foot pegs
Vespa Helmet holder
small clock

and a coffee cup that fits perfectly in the storage compartment.

Today I took my scoot to the shop so they could look at the brakes, I removed the windscreen (smallest size) because earlier I wanted to check the brake lines under the body panels. Realizing the problem was the calibers I put things back together but left the windscreen off and drove to the shop where they can work on the bike. Boy what a difference! I’ve had the screen on for over 6 months and forgot how it rode without the screen.
If there is a single modification I would do over again its adding a windscreen, not sure how the other sizes are but the smaller one adds a huge comfort level, the buffeting is reduced to nearly nothing compared to without a screen. There is also a dramatic stability difference between on, which is good, to having no screen, I was jacked all about without the screen.
I highly recommend a windscreen if you want top-end comfort and stability

The foot pegs are available for around $60 at

http://www.scooterpartsdirect.com/cat.p ... 1&men_id=1

look at the bottom of the page. There's a discount for ordering via the Internet. It's the best price I found new.

I was looking for those at my personal shopping strip mall, aka eBay, but
could not find them. Saw your link, 5 minutes later my order was complete.

Thanks for the link. Nothing like saving money on a Sat. morning!

It wasn't planned, but I found some Gas Saver tire valve caps at Wal*Mart that will make it easy for me to see if the tire pressure drops below 27 psi. I have a little flexibility problem that makes getting to the tire valves a little difficult.

Don't know if they plan any, but crash bars seem pretty unlikely given the Buddy's lack of rear cowls. Legshield protectors are possible, but you'd probably have to drill plastic to mount them, plus the "legshield" is actually several pieces rather than a single one... seems a little unlikely.

Plus, the point of crash bars (aside from looking hot) is to protect your scoot when it falls. But those were designed for metal-bodied scoots. Replacing chrome on the Buddy would cost a lot more than replacing plastic panels!

So what's the small, chrome, carabiner-looking thing hanging just beneath the front of the seat? Is my Italia missing something? I've heard talk about a "helmet lock," but I haven't found mine yet. Of course I haven't read the manual yet. :)

Open your seat and you'll see two little pegs near the hinge. Loop the rings of your chinstrap around that peg and reclose your seat. Whala! Your helmet is secure from theft and you still have all that storage area in your trunk. BTW, two pegs for two helmets for those who "double up" with their wives.

No sewing neccessary. Just get the 3 prong plastic clips from michaels or an army/navy store and the rope just feeds thru them and stays taught. God knows I can't sew either!
