50cc performance pipe?

Post by rablack »

I checked the Scooterworks site and discovered that there is a performance pipe for the 50 cc Buddy.

Does anyone have any experience with this pipe? Would I just sound like a bigger, meaner leaf blower? Performance? What could be expected - more top end, more acceleration, both? I rode a 50 with the 70 cc cylinder kit and the difference didn't seem worth $200 plus labor to me.

The 125 cc pipe sure looks nice compared to the 50cc one. Damn my skinflint ways, I shoulda got the 125.

You wernt riding a properly tuned 70cc.

Click this link and select the movie on the right.

That is my Malaguti (about the same weight as the Buddy). I weigh 165. This was last Sept. I have a 70cc Malossi MHR Rep kit, 19mm carb, Tecnigas None exhaust, overrange, red spring. It is probably $1000 worth of parts. Speed that day was a solid 65 (GPS verified, which agreed with my calibrated bike speedo).

If you arnt afraid of some carb jetting, and variator tuning, then go for the performance pipe. You will be able to out accelerate the B.125 when properly tuned...shoot, I can out accelerate GT200s, P200s, Chetaks, etc...

I'm mechanically able but time constrained and have no experience with two-stroke tuning or CVTs. I can bolt on a new pipe but am wondering whether it makes sense to do so without doing the other mods.

In other words, would the new pipe with no other mods make any real difference? would the scoot run worse?

no. It will not run right at all without jetting and roller tuning. The pipe pulls more fuel/air mix through the cyl and requires jetting. The increased power will throw the weight/spring balance off and it will just bog down and act like you have a power decrease.

BTW, here is how the pipe works:

This is far far different from how a 4t works. The 2t responds very well to the pipe and you can easily double power output just by adding the pipe. With a 4t, adding a pipe typically adds about 1hp (on a 125/150). It might look goofy, but it really is a work of art.

Excellent diagram/animation - thanks.

So, to get the full benefit of the pipe you must rejet.
Having achieved the greater power output you then need to change the roller weights and probably the contra spring.
Do you then need to change the final drive gear?

Rather daunting and a far cry from simply bolting on a pipe. This is also something that I might want to wait on doing until the warranty has expired.

You dont have to change the final drive gears....you only do that if you want to increase top speed some more (at the sacrifice of low end acceleration).

You might be able to just get away with changing the rollers, but usually the contra spring is not very strong from the factory and you will get belt slippage. Also when you start to get really light on the rollers (like 3g or so) the transmission begins to not work very linearly (it gets really twitchy)...so you end up putting in a stiffer spring to get it to stabilize more.

I talked with the people at Sportique in Boulder and they confirmed that just adding the pipe would not do anything but bog it down - at least at our altitude. The first performance upgrade for the 50 that they recommend is moving up to 70cc bore as monza has done - just fyi.
