windscreens; suggestions for makes and mail order sites

Yesterday, at Vepa of Portland I checked out Kaos's small-size windscreen by Prima. We both agreed that a Medium size would probably be best for me. The small prima goes 13" high above the headlight. Unfortunately the medium size offered at scooterworks is only 14" high (wow, big difference!).

I went to Slip Streamer's website and unfortunately did not find any specs on the sizes of their different models.

Can anyone recommend any other windscreen makers or provide specs on the Slip Streamer sizes? I'm also seeking the names of a few good mail order houses.

I've spent the past 35 minutes reading more of the earlier previous posts about screens. I realize that much of it is personal yet at this time I haven't much more how to take a guess at size screen and shape other than to try and base my decision somewhat on my physical size.

I'm 5'8" medium build. My upper torso is where I have most of my height with my legs being relatively shorter. Upper torso wise, Kaos and I are probably somewhat close in size. He is happy with his Prima small screen.

I don't want a tall sail of a windscreen. So now I'm having second thoughts about a medium and wondering if I should get a small screen. Life can be confusing. Fortunately, this is really a very small human problem.

Any thoughts that maybe a small size 13" high one would be ok for me?

Probably anything is better than nothing

I am 5'11" and have a medium Prima. I easily look over the top but the windscreen pushes the turbulant air over my head resulting in a comfortable ride. Every time I clean the bugs off the windscreen I am think 'those bugs would have smashed into me if I didn't have the windscreen'. Anyway, I am a huge fan of having that protection in front of me.

In the photo, at the scooterworks site the screen is shown raised a few inches above the headlight.

I was surprised that the medium screen offered at scooterworks is only 1" taller than the small screen wsbud3 by Cuppini 17"W with 13"H from top of headlight.

I don't know the part number, all I can tell you is it is the Prima Medium screen.

here are a couple slip streamer 66 photos. One w/o rider, one with. I wear a full face helmet and the wind hits me on the top.
I am not even sure if you can see the screen real well in these pics though.

Peabody, you're looking good there on your scoot. Thanks for posting the pics of the windscreen. I could see the pics fine.

I went to Columbia Scooters here that pdxrita wrote about and took a look at the Slip Streamer 66. They told me that they'd have to raise my Buddy Mirrors up two inches to accomodate the mounting brackets. The saleman suggested that the stock screens for the Buddy from Prima at scooterworks would be about $200! I informed him that they were under $100.

On Tuesday, I'm going to call my local Buddy dealer Vespa of Portland and see what package we can put together.

Riding today was very windy at times. I really felt my scoot and me moved over a bit while going about 40mph.

Putting down my FF visor and placing one of OnGuards very heavy noose locks and chain under the seat helps somewhat to center and reduce winddrag. I'm looking forward to how a screen will further help reduce the problem.

I might be misunderstanding the post, but I did not have to do any modifications to my mirrors for the slip streamer. the end result is the mirrors do go out wider after installation (which is good)

Just a personal opinion, but I've had very poor service and misinformation from Columbia Scooters. I won't frequent their shop after they treated me like a second class scooterist for not being a Bajaj rider(The bike they sold the most of at the time) and feeding me blatent dis-information about the Buddy that I knew from experience was incorrect.

Sorry to hear about the bad experiences at Columbia. My partner bought a Kymco from them and has been happy with their service. I guess you have to buy a scooter from them to get decent treatment.

What they said about the mirrors is essentially true - the windshield mounts via the mirror holes, and then the mirror sits on top of the mounts. So it is a bit higher. I haven't found this to be an issue at all.

Yeah, thats kinda the impression I got. You're not worth their time unless it for their scooters...

My windshield raises the mirrors as well, they end up about an inch higher and either an inch forwards or an inch outwards depending on how you do the install.

You didn't misunderstand the post. The salesman said that the mounting brackets that he has for the SS #66 would require my scoot to have its mirrors hiked up at bit as in @ 2".

Thanks for your words yet really the treatment wasn't bad at all. Whether he really believed it or was simply breathing out sales BS, the comment about the Prima price wasn't a big deal.

Thanks for mentioning how the new mirror height does no affect things.

They must be under new marching orders this being the beginning of the slow season as overall the rep was nice and helpful. He took a SS #66 out to my scoot and laid it on top. Later, when I asked about other screens, he was nice enough to go get out a catalog which we looked through.

I did mention that I was referred to him by a member of the online MB Forum who bought a SS from Columbia.

I have the short screen from scooterworks. I am 6'1" and it directs air to the middle of my helmet, but I like the look of it and it keeps the air off my chest. Great build quality too. Oh and if I tuck a little I can easily get behind it.

Really, I don't think many of us have a lot of points of comparison. I would venture a guess that most of us bought a windscreen that appealed to us for whatever reason and we either like it, or hate it, in comparison to no screen at all. I happen to prefer riding with the windscreen since I don't like the feeling of being pushed back on my scooter when going 45 bmph or higher. So the real question, I think, is simply to screen or not to screen. Which screen you choose is probably less important.

I agree with you. Most of us do not have a prior frame of reference. My current Buddy is my first scoot, and I have never used or ridden anyone else's motorcycle before with or without a windscreen.

My thoughts are that whether I choose a medium or small that is Prima or Slip Streamer the difference of having or not a screen is obviously much greater.

I like to spend some time gathering information from which I hope to make an informed choice so that I don't have to re-purchase a different model in the future. Having spent time researching scoots, I'm still satisfied with my decision to purchase the Buddy and not the Sym or Kymco.

I have the Prima and think it is doing ok. Bought it cause it wa scheap and now it is even cheaper. I can show it to you and let you ride my Buddy since I am in Portland also.
