Picture of my half-painted scoot with custom colors
Yesterday, Kaos and I (essentially Kaos) began spray painting my Buddy. The picture that I took appears to have a bit more orange-tone in real-life.
In person, it does look like professional work. Kaos has the gift for using the spray can and my role was limited to picking up the used newspaper that the wind was blowing away. I got to play with some neighbors cat too. The color tones that I'm using are a blood-orange and antracite which is like a dark grey almost black. Afterwards, clear coat spray will be applied.
It's a funny looking scooter mutt today: green, cream, blood-orange, and dark grey. I'm still not sure which of the two new colors to paint the front and rear fenders, and the wheels. Suggestions?
I removed an earlier notice, without a picture, that I was painting since within 40 minutes there were sixty-seven views and no comments. I got the hint.
BTW, the colors that my blackberry camera took for my other posting today of my sheepskin cover are actually very true to life.

The paint job looks great so far!
I'd paint the fenders the red-orange like the main part of the scoot.
Are you going to paint the 'Serenity' logo or symbols on there?

Kaos, I just re-took the picture (5:15pm) which is more modest sunlight. Lets see how it looks.
Myras girls, your Serenity and brown-coat posts are great. They crack me up! To answer your question, it's a thought... BTW, what color should I paint the wheels (the Buddy Italian wheels are green so mine need paint!).
Let's see if there is contrast with this new picture.
EDIT: looking out my window in comparison to what is showing here online, it seems as if my living scoot still has a bit more orange blended into the red color. I think that my scoot looks better in the flesh than this pic.

krustyburger,Kaos wrote:It was Montana Gold if I remember right. That stuff dries WICKED fast. Not even tacky after 10 minutes.KRUSTYburger wrote:What kind of paint are you using?
Kaos is correct. We are using the Montana Gold line. Here is a link to their color chart and some additional information:
http://www.montana-cans.com/products/cans/gold/
What is really surprising to me is that Kaos was able to achieve such good results while spraying away even after the there was very little light left to see and the temperature was fairly coolish along with some breeze. I pulled on some lightly lined thinsulate gloves to ride home with.
The spray paint is available at art supply stores and cost a few dollars more per can. However, it doesn't seem to require many coats and little gets wasted during spraying. Still, check with Kaos on that as he has experience with spray painting. The last time I spray painted was in high school when I rebuilt a rusted-out old snowmobile in the mid-west.

Getting better. Thanks for asking. Probably another week on meds and I will be out the other side of this.Portland_Rider wrote:Thank you Skootz Kabootz. If you can't tell I'm a hardcore Browncoat and have been since the first episode aired. I was even lucky enough to go to 2 advance screenings of the movie and I've met all the cast.Portland_Rider wrote:Myras girls, your Serenity and brown-coat posts are great. They crack me up! I have some swag that I'd be happy to send your way if you're interested. Like, um, a 'Serenity' keychain for your scooter keys.

Sure do think it would look shiny with that Blood Orange.

OR

Me, I'd probably paint the wheels black.

I'd like to apologize in advance for all the questions...
What caps did you guys get with the paint? The super fat ones? How did you like the
ones you got? How much paint did you use? How many coats? Did you use primer?
I'm still deciding on colors, but I'm gonna have to order it pretty soon because I'll be doing
bare metal bodywork and rust is not my friend.

Having no idea that there WERE more than one cap(PR bought the paint)KRUSTYburger wrote:I'd like to apologize in advance for all the questions...

It seemed semi-fat. It was very even in it's spray patern, and worked well.
Everything you see in that picture is less than 1 can per color. Infact, judging by weight, I'd say it was a little over 1/2 a can. Each panel got about 3 coats of paint, followed by 1 of clear, with the exception of the front panel which got 4. No primer, just roughed it up a bit with some fine grit paper.

The caps we used were the standard ones though I'm not sure if there is a specific name to them. I informed that staff what I was doing and the reply at the art store was that the regular caps would probably be fine since it doesn't seem as though the wide or narrow would be needed for a scooter.KRUSTYburger wrote:I'd like to apologize in advance for all the questions...

Maybe getting a couple of different caps would be a good idea as I'm sure they are fairly cheap.

So far, mostly good.jijifer wrote:how is it adhering? any chipping yet?
I rode home immediately afterwards (maybe 20 minutes after the last spray). On the front panel/grill there appeared to be a few small pebble marks and a few small scratch marks. It is very possible that while dry to the touch the paint was still settling. I also noticed a few very small places where I was setting my boots down that the new paint had been scratched or rubbed off. Again, those were very small places.
I did not ride my scoot on Monday or Tuesday.

myras girls,
Yes, I can tell that you are a hardcore browncoat. Very shiny. That is great that you were able to get to two advanced screenings. You've met the entire cast? I'm honored to chat with you online. I guess with killing off Walsh and Shepard that there probably aren't plans for another film? Would that be correct?
You have some Firefly swag? Cool or shiny again. Thank you for your kind offer. Let me get back to you on that today when my coffee kicks in and I can really wake up here.
I like your suggestion of black for the wheels. As my current color scheme is turning out, the scoot's blood orange is not quite a perfect match with the Firefly image you posted. Those are beautiful colors. Mine has some more red in it which is a great improvement for getting noticed in traffic over the Italia Green (Portland is also a very green city so the Italia probably simply looks like just another bush to a cager). The other color thats being used in the seating area anthracite is not just a dark grey as it is almost a black so I think that black wheels with that almost black wouldn't blend well. Still, the anthracite which from several feet away looks like it is black, it should work fine. Thanks.

I didn't meet the whole cast at once, but rather of the course of several years attending Dragon*Con over Labor Day Weekend in Atlanta. Everyone gets to meet celebrities at Dragon*Con! I highly recommend it- a fun time to be had by all!Portland_Rider wrote: You've met the entire cast? I'm honored to chat with you online. As far as another movie goes, Joss did/does have a story in mind for another film or two- in fact when the cast signed on they signed a contract for potentially three films, depending on how well the first movie fared in theaters. Sadly the first film didn't gross enough for Universal to greenlight the second film so at this point I'd say we aren't going to see any more movies. *sniff*
Now Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcom Reynolds) is probably the biggest fan of the show and just won't let go. He's placed an item from the 'Firefly' set somewhere on the set of his current show, 'Castle'. He keeps bringing it up in interviews for 'Castle'.
You never know what will happen as more and more new fans find out about the series and rent/buy it on dvd. That's how the first movie got made. 'Firefly' was in the Amazon top 10 bestseller list for so long that Universal decided to give it another chance on film. 'Course now most of the actors are working on other projects, but no doubt they'd find a way to make a film if it happened as they all talk about what an amazing experience it was and how much they love the show.

The bike is ALMOST all painted. The fenders and headset still need done.Lil Buddy wrote:Any progress on the paint job?
How is it holding up?
Theres one spot that isn't sticking properly, but I suspect I didn't prep that part properly.
Its been raining for 2 solid weeks now, so we've not been able to finish it yet

Maybe PR should post new pics
