Question about heated gear

Post by chloefpuff »

(okay, this is a "for dummies" level question)

Do you plug it into the 12v outlet?
Aerostich has a heated vest that I've got my eye on.....

Read the description of the product. There are different connections. Most are hard wired, but some run on batteries. Most motorcycles do not have a 12v cigarette adapter, so it is doubtful you can find one ready to use with such an attachment, and it is very doubtful that you should plug that into the Buddy adapter anyway. The available lighter/charger on the Buddy has very low amperage, which means to draw enough power to charge anything heated will most likely blow it out. It is really only meant to be a cell phone charger, or GPS, and that is it.

Here's what the description says: 30 watts, 2.5 amps. Two lengths: Regular to 5'9", and Tall over 5'10". Patent Pending. Choose fused, lighted power switch coil or simple SAE non-switch, non-coil cord.

Other than I'm a "regular", this makes zero sense to me. So how do I power to this thing?

You would have to actually wire it into your bike, of which I have little experience, but I am sure there are plenty of people here who will step up to offer advice. If they have an 1-800 number I would also call, and see if it comes with instructions. Having a switch just means you can turn it on and off. Do not try to put it through the cigarette lighter though. I can guarantee it will need more power than that it can handle. I believe it only provides 1 amp if I am remembering correctly.

Hope that helps a little.

Well, I've gotten this far without learning how to wire. No reason to start now!

In other words, I guess I'd better look for gear with a battery pack.

The Buddy's 12V outlet has a 1amp fuse, so if it needs 2.5amps, it'd blow the fuse.

The wiring for this is very easy. Hardest part would be routing the wires up to a good exit point.

It would be wired directly to the battery. Red to red (also known as positive or +) and black to black (negative or -).

Having an inline switch would be smart (if the connecting plug is within reach, that would work just as well). As well as the additional fuse from the company.

Just be prepared to plug your battery into a tender each night (or after each use if possible). The additional 30watt draw will drain your scooters battery.
