Can't get my CVT cover off- Buddy 50

Post by pinkbuddydude »

I'm trying to derestrict my buddy 50 as shown in the Genuine video (viewtopic.php?t=11300&highlight=dealer+video), but I can't get the CVT cover off. I removed 8 screws, are there more I don't see? I also removed the kick start swing arm. Any ideas?

The first time I did mine it was a pain in the a--, 8 screw is right (at least for my 125) U need to get something like a mallet to tap around the cover to get it loose, something that won't damage it. Ther is a post here somewhere when I had the same problem

I cant be sure of the bolt count difference of the 125/150 and the 50cc models, but if you truley are sure you got all the bolts out, a small hit with the palm of your hand downward will get it off. Have your opposite hand ready to catch the cover incase it falls. You dont want to scratch it. Nothing mechanically can be messed up if it hits the ground, but for looks it can be damaged.

Yeah, its just 8 bolts on the 50's too. You didn't need to remove the kickstart lever.

Just hit it lightly with your hand, it'll be stiff the first time you take it off.

I remember the first time my CVT cover came off – it needed to be persuaded with a mallet, gently tapping around the cover until loose. At first I tried with the palm of my hand, that didn’t work for me, just hurt my hand so I went for something firmer.

Also, if you crank the kick starter hard it usually comes off.

OK all you mallet users, listen up! Please be more specific when telling someone who's doing this for the first time that it's a rubber mallet so they don't end up damaging their case. Non-marring would of course be ideal, but something as simple as a tent stake mallet (big black rubber thing) would be the cheapest.

Usually, it may just require a couple light taps. Since I am mallet-less, I will sometimes fold a shop towel over a few times and use that to pad a small hammer. If it requires more force, I have to get creative.

Really need to make a Harbor Freight run soon. :)

This might help clarify mallet use.

Place a towl or some shop rags on the case before you hit it with a mallet or your hand. This will help prevent scuffing the case and will soften the blow of your hand. Works for me everytime.

lol... thanks for the mallet clarification. the only mallet i have is a wack-a-mole style wooden mallet, which i'll try tonight. if that fails i'll move to the folded shop towel + hammer approach

You dont even need a mallet, make a light and firm fist with your right hand, and just tap lightly a few times until it comes loose or falls off.

the wooden mallet did the trick, though it took several taps before i felt it start to come loose. thanks for the advice guys, i'm all derestricted now and can't wait to try it out. but i'll have to wait since the roads by my house aren't fully plowed, and i don't have chains on my buddy tires
