Another Speedo Question

Post by Corsair »

Is there anyway that the speedometer can be adjusted so that it shows your actual speed (not the optimized speed)

The dealer I asked that question to in Salt Lake City told me no. Stating that even your car is about 5% optimistic and that there isn't a way to effectively calibrate it.

I'm no mechanic so I can't vouch for what he told me. Just passin on the word

I've seen on here and modern vespa where people mount GPS devices to their scoots. That's not the best way to calibrate but does give you more of an accurate "real" read on how fast you're traveling.

I haven't taken it apart to see what's there, but those kinds of dials can sometimes be adjusted with a pot. The goal of calibration is usually to be as accurate as possible throughout the normal range it would display. If you could adjust it you'd really have to play with it (and verify actual speed) at various speeds to improve the overall accuracy, if that's even possible.

Much easier to just be aware that it's telling you you're going a little faster than you really are.

They probably cannot be adjusted by dialing in a "pot" (potentiometer). The speedo is gear driven and the calibration is off by a percentage, not "so many miles per hour". If you dialed it in at, say, 30 m.p.h., it would still be incorrect at all other speeds. The only way to change it would be replacing the gears that provide the reading.

Or printing out a new dial graphic and pasting it over the existing one - which would be fine in daylight but wouldn't backlight correctly. You might be able to replace the entire printed facing with your own custom design - and recalibrated speedo graphic over the bare transparent base so that backlighting works correctly.

I dare say that is the MOST likely place you'd ever find me wearing a speedo.
