First oil change/service?

Post by iheartsf »

I know some of y'all changed your buddy's oil at 185m (300km)-edit: 'cause that's what the manual says to do- but I hit that mileage within a week and a half, so it seemed a bit silly to bring it back in. Now I have around 300 miles and I feel a little guilty.

When should I be bringing him in for his first oil change? Should I have anything else done at that point? (besides adding a rear rack :))

Gracias! :)

My dealer told me to bring it in at 500 miles so that's what I'm planning to do. I'm at 340-something so I'll probably bring mine in next weekend.

Yes, you should.

In order for the Genuine warranty to be valid, a Genuine dealer has to give it a once-over checkup before 500 miles.

So have them:

1) Change the engine oil
2) Change the gear oil
3) Check fasteners and tire pressures
4) Check whatever else they need to for the warranty to be valid.

Just to be safe, make a specific point of telling them to only put 90cc of oil in the final drive, else it will weep out and end up on your rear wheel & tire.

They shouldn't charge more than a 1/2 hour of labor time for everything other than the fluid changes, or they're ripping you off. Just something to watch for when you get the bill. ;)

Sweet. Thanks Jeremy!

It's funny, when I first signed up for insurance and they asked me how many miles I thought I'd put on it in a year I said probably 1,000. At this rate, I'll probably ride 4-5,000 in a year. Crazy!

Hey, I like your avatar, by the way.

It took me a while to figure out what that was depicting in the manual. Apparently it is a dog getting burned on the hot exhaust of a parked Buddy, and the manual is saying that parking the Buddy in an area where a dumb dog can get to it is incorrect.

Sometimes, the translated manuals are frustrating, but they're funny too. This kind of thing, you'll never find in a Honda manual.

I'm dropping mine off at the dealer Saturday. I'm having separation anxiety already! It should have pretty close to 500 miles on it by then.

I did read on another post that the factory recommends checking the valves on the first service as well. I don't know if that is required by warranty or not, but it doesn't sound like a bad idea.

I thought it was a picture of the scooter running over a dog.

In the MSF manual it says not to kick a dog if it's chasing your motorcycle. My whole class thought that was the funniest thing ever

I've had mine for about 2 1/2 weeks and am at 350 miles. I am making an appointment with my dealer for this weekend or next. I'm pretty surprised that I'm hitting the 1st service marker already...or not!

Hello,

I've had my Buddy about a week and a half. I am at a bout 300 miles and I am taking it back today for its first oil change.

There was a discussion about synthetic oil on the Yahoo Buddy group. What I got out of it was that synthetic oil prevents the engine from breaking in properly b/c it lubricates too well. I guess if you use synthetic the rings never seal up properly. There may be autos and perhaps bikes that are designed to run on synthetic oil from the start but I don't think the Buddy is in that club.

My dealer didn't specify any particular brand, just "regular" 15w-40.

As for whether or not synthetic is OK or of any benefit after the break-in period I'll defer to some of the more experienced members of the forum.

I called my dealer the other day to see that if I performed the normal maintenance would the warranty still be valid. He stated that a dealer did not need to perform the oil changes.

THat is correct......if you do the oil changes etc then they can not by law void your warranty just because they did not do it.........with that said make sure you save every receipt and document all of your maintenance thoroughly..if something should happen and you have not done that it could come back to haunt you.........

thanks for the information on the oil......I will let her get broke in and do some more checking around......I would think the synthetic would be better long term......keeps the engine cooler and doesnt break down at high temps like regular oil does...........cost a little more but well worth the money in the long run........I will double check with the dealer as well......
