I moved down to Philly about 6 months ago and haven't spent much time on this site since my new job doesn't give me free time to go on the internet
But I'm home for a couple of days since I took a bad spill yesterday. My wheel got caught in the trolley tracks as I was about to make a turn. The bike fell on my right leg. I got up with an adrenaline rush, picked up the bike and rolled it over to a parking lot. I was about to go back into the street to retrieve my face shield when I realized exactly how much blood was coming from my throbbing ankle.
I had an ambulance take me to the ER...busted up my elbow & knee, got a little road rash on my leg, but the ankle was the worst. Not broken (thankfully), but severely bruised and there is a ginormous wound. This would have probably been mostly prevented if I were wearing my boots. I am kicking myself for getting lax on wearing my gear. Thankfully I was wearing my helmet (as I ALWAYS do.)
Seriously people, boots are a great idea. If I busted up my ankle like I did barely moving, I don't wanna know what would happen during a fall at even 25 MPH. There is now a hole in my ankle so gross that I have trouble looking at it.
Ouch, hope you heal up soon. The ankle's a nasty place to sustain an injury.
If you feel you should wear boots and you have boots but you don't wear them... then you've got the wrong pair. I got tired of lacing up my boots everytime since I could just slip my sneakers on in a few seconds. Velcro and zippered boots that fit under or over jeans and/or riding pants changed that. It's a difference of 5 seconds vs 10 with sneaks vs boots. Old boots were closer to a minute.
I had a similar thing happen to me last July...although it was caused by me trying not to kill an idiot guy on a bicycle who rode out directly in front of me. Needless to say, I decided to lay the bike down rather than T-bone him, resulting in my ankle being trapped under the bike as it slid (I had been going ~25mph). My ankle was the only unprotected part of my body, so it suffered the damage. ER ride (even though I was across the street from the hospital) and major deep abrasions with constant threats of skin-grafting from the surgeon. Luckily, after many weeks, it heeled up and I'm just left with some gnarly scars.
I had been looking at boots, but dragging my feet (no pun intended) about spending the money...then my accident changed that. I bought the Icon Bombshell boots and I absolutely love them! They even have special added ankle protection.

Yeah, I definitely got lazy with the boots. And I'm surrounded by people in this city who don't even wear helmets when they ride, let alone boots or any other gear, so I definitely got lax. I have a nice pair of Docs that I was wearing the first time I dropped my scoot, and they definitely saved my foot that time. This spill was much worse though...maybe because I didn't have the gear.

I ride with Doc Marten Industrials. They're fantastic. When I took my slide they only took some minor scuffing.
Yup, I got two pair of docs and I'm thinking about picking up a pair of grinders or a pair of Fluvogs. Both of which use much thicker leather than Docs these days. btw have either of you been able to check out the made in england docs yet? I've heard they're just as high quality as the originals before they moved manufacture to china.

Great thread (glad you are OK DIPA!). I have worn out my boots and am now shopping for a new pair. With summer coming I am tempted to wear my Chuck Connors but nothing feels right except my over the ankle boots. Protection is always in fashion for me. I've really liked my zip-up Honda MC Boots. Easy on and off. (Won them in a company golf tournament five years before I ever started riding and they just sat in the closet waiting for me to buy a scooter!)
I'm looking at some Doc Martins and various other brands. Really interested in hearing what other people like.

The Doc Marten Industrials are still made in England. Thats why I buy them Vs the normal Doc's. They still retain the original Doc quality.
She felt the Icon's were a little bit too...??? Don't know what else to say, at least for her, they were simply a little bit too... The Diadora's seem well made and still pretty fashionable.

It's not that I would mind being even taller it's just that my legs are already as long as a guy I know who's 6'4". If I wear heels on the Buddy my knees will be practically right up to the handle bars!
For some reason, I just don't gear up when I'm on the scooter. I wear full leathers when I'm on my MC, but for some reason........... Road rash sucks, and I should know better, but for some reason..........

That's good to know. The last pair of docs I bought kinda sucked. The leather is quite thin and soft so they don't hold a polish very well and If I ever do lay the scooter down I'm not sure how long they will hold up for until I reach ankle. I'll have to check out the Industrials.

A lot of people around here seem to have that attitude...for me it was the scooter's smaller tires that got me in trouble this time. The emergency room nurse said I was certainly not the first one to come in for scooter injuries from getting caught up in trolley tracks. I mean, road rash hurts at even 15 MPH regardless of what you're falling from!
I wear my gear year round a heavy Corrazo jacket during the colder days and a mesh on hot days. I wear gloves every day also, the palms of my hands have alway been susceptible to perspiration. So wearing gloves gives me better grip as I scoot.
I have 3 different pair of boots. Which I wear year round, even during the hottest part of the summer. I switch daily from one pair to the other. It gives them a chance to air out and un-stink.
The other thing I do is keep a pair of "work shoes" at the office and change into them when I get to work each morning. Keeps my feet "fresh", well as fresh as feet in shoes can be.
Since you're in Philly, head over to Gilly Jeans on South street. They have an AMAZING selection of boots, are super nice, and will order you anything if they don't have them.

i have these boots as well. very comfortable and still feminine, especially if you have narrow feet. i've had them for over a year and see them lasting for a long time. only wish they made these in synthetic material, as i am not keen on buying leather products.
My one and only slide on my scooter was the one time I didn't wear my boots. Nice big section of scar tissue on the outside of my right ankle, new-ish pair of x-trainer sneakers ground down and toast. $80 out the window. Those were good shoes, too.
I wear surplus army boots, the old soft-rubber soles. They're about to need retirement, though and I hate the new sole design...I should start looking around. Might look into those Industrials.
