Has anyone painted the interior of their Buddy?

Post by JulietFitzie »

Hey all!

I can almost not tolerate the black interior on the Buddies. Or rather I know how much better it would look if it wasn't black (thats what makes the internationals more appealing to the eye in my opinion- not because theyre two-toned)

Has anyone painted their interior? If so, do you have pics? How did it go? What paint did you use?

Also I've heard talk about swiping panels and stuff- but I'm not sure how likely it will be that I can switch the floor and the part behind my calves for other ones. Anyone know anything? I tried a search on here first but it brought back no concrete info.

I'm not in LOVE with the Internationals, but if I find out theres no way I can change the black interior on the 125's in the future, then I'm going to get an international. Its that serious. lol.

Thanks!
Juliet

p.s. officially getting my scooter in a couple weeks :) :) :)

Repainting can be done. It's best to use Krylon Fusion or other paint made for plastic. One of the best things about these is that they don't require sanding or preparation other than cleaning.

Some pics from other threads:

Actually painted from pink to black:

I painted the interior of Portland_Rider's bike(Well the whole bike actually) and the interior did need some prep. I just scuffed the panels lightly with a sanding block.

Just don't try to use Krylon Fusion as a primer. Fusion + regular paint DOES NOT MIX. It will come out looking a little like...

Image

We were working under some pretty crazy time restraints so we didn't give the Fusion more then a couple hours to set. So that might have been the cause. Or it could have been some chemical reaction. I know that I didn't bother to "primer" mine with the Fusion and my paint outlasted hers x10.

Anyway sorry for the ramble. If you sand it smooth it should be fine. 8)

Is it just that you want two toned or you don't like the matte black with the color of scooter that you are getting? What color scooter are you getting? Is there a reason that you did not just go for the International, if you want the two toned so much?

I have a Buddy 125 in Sunset Orange, it has about 4 different colors and I find this to be too many colors for my pesonal tastes. The worst is the orange interior, but it seems like such a huge job to rip the scooter apart so that I can get to the interior panels, I will live with it. The orange of my scooter is a beautiful sparkly color that I really like, but the odd orange interior is what I just do not like at all.

Good luck, and welcome,

We actually masked off the interior panels and painted them on the bike. Worked fine. Because, yes, it is a giant pain to remove those panels :)

OH, don't tell me that! I am going to have to go out and get myself some masking tape and Krylon now! LOL Did you remove the body panels to protect them from getting painted and to allow better access?

Seriously, though, I am really thinking of going with Krylon Plastic Fusion paint in the Satin Brown Boots color or maybe the Satin Espresso. I want to go with a brown, I think that would look best with the orange...

I just want to go with something to cut down on the number of colors on the thing-the beautiful sparkly orange body panels are fine, but then we have the brown of the seat, the dark brown of the floor mat, a slightly lighter brown-almost khaki for the grips (perhaps they are a bit faded, but it is a different color anyway) and then a totally different wierd orange of the interior...

Maybe taking the orange interior to brown will help with the orange interior from detracting from the pretty orange of the body...

So, OP, what color is your new scooter, and what are you looking at wanting to change it to? I will say that I have used the Krylon paint http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion_for_plastic/ on other applications and used a lighter color to cover a darker plastic and it did a good job (touch ups were needed, but it was not a huge undertaking to fix those, but I would suggest goign with something dark to cover the black (for example if you get the powder blue I would suggest not trying to cover the black interior with a white paint).

YAY!!! THANKS GUYS

I am going to get the orange buddy and paint the black inside something else.
I love the orange but it looks way too harsh with the black.
So now I know I can paint it, and better yet, I can tape off everything and not have to take it apart to paint it. That is GREAT NEWS.

I'm so excited!! Thank you guys, and thank you for those pictures too -- they are awesome.

Nope, left all the body panels on the bike. The only things we removed were the seat bucket, and we painted the front panel off the bike, because it was easy to remove.

Long Island NY on the MAP! I grew up on LI, (Miller Place)... and never saw a scooter growing up, and in all my subsequent visits to the family, have yet to see a scooter less than 400cc. I can't wait to make the trip up this summer and turn some heads on Jericho Turnpike!

NICE! Yeah there are really no scooters here at all. Thats funny - Jericho Turnpike lol I almost live on jericho. I grew up in the bronx but moved here about a year ago-- and yeah I don't think I've seen one scooter here- other than visiting a dealership. wow thats weird now that i think about it.

I grew up in Valley Stream, but probably left before you guys were born....
There seems to be a few more scoots on the South Shore than North, there was a Vespa 'Botique' (That was what they called themselves  ) in Cedarhurst in the 80's
I still visit regulary and do see scoots in the 5-Towns area though.

JulietFitzie Have you checked out "The Long Island Hornets" scooter club yet?

I loved seeing the pink they painted black. I have a 2006 pink and its fading into a weird 2-tone pink machine. I might have a new summer project now.

I like the Broncos machine that was awesome.

Good luck with your modifications!

Yeah, the orange and black do look pretty harsh together. What color are you thinking of going with?

I think I'm going to paint the inside Orange as well- so the whole thing is orange. I'm sure the inside I paint won't come out exactly matching the outside panels but close enough. I like the way it looks all one color.
I was playing on Photoshop, though, and I also like the powder blue when the inside is also blue. So I'm not sure if I'm going to purchase the orange or the blue yet. But either way the inside will match and either way it will have a tan seat.

I am going by memory for colors and internet pictures.

Krylon seems to only come in a safety orange (I have seen this color and it really is the orange of traffic cones and road construction barrels) and the soft Tangerine of the Buddy might not go so well with this particular shade of orange.

The Mint Buddy might look very nice with the soft mint green of the "Honeydew" color, kind of a monochrome palette that I think would likely be very pleasing.

The Powder Blue Buddy might also look lovely with the "Satin Peekaboo Blue" as the interior.

Just my own thoughts on the matter, of course. I am planning to stop on the way home to pick up a can of the Cocoa Brown Textured Shimmer paint to see how it looks in real life and I am considering maybe using that for the interior. I am not sure how well this particular paint holds up to wear and tear, seems like it could be better, could be worse.

Thanks for the thread, I have learned a lot and I am really feeling motivated to actually try this for myself

Right now I am working on getting myself TO the shop to get it. My sister still has my truck in PA and it is a bit far to walk. We might have to wait until they get down here and we are ready to go to Indy for me to go get it.

For some reason I think Caitlyn and Chris might look a little sideways at me if I show up with a bottle of spray paint in hand.

Oh wow - you're right- they don't have the right orange at all. I didn't realize how limited the colors would be since its such a specific type of paint. Damn.
I just looked elsewhere for a good paint for plastic- and only found a few other ones- which had even more of a limited selection of colors.
Grrrrr
Well i guess this makes the Powder Blue Buddy the final choice.
Ideally it will look like the attached image, but realistically anything close will be better than the black.

this interior thread got me to thinking....

my cream with black interior is looking bad. the interior black is faded and dull. I am happy to hear you can mask off and krylon. It really does not drip?

minor thread stealing alert: what colors would go with cream if I wanted to move away from basic black? open to anything

I would venture to say that you can get away with pretty much any color with cream! Depends on how adventurous you want to be... They do make the Krylon in a black, so you could just touch things up and not have to worry about little scrapes and scuffs (yawn).

If you go with a darker color it would be easier to cover and when the paint gets scuffed it would be less obvious.

If you have not used spray paint before I really urge you to get some and paint some things that are not as precious as your scooter... surely you have some lawn furniture hanging around that could stand some freshening up? If not, get some and practice on that. :) This will also give you a chance to check out the actual color and see if it is what you are looking for.

You can always Google tips for using spray paint, the thing that I have to constantly remind myself is to put a very light coat on and then build up from there. You can always do another coat but try to put too much on at once and you WILL get a drip or a ripple and then it will look like crap.

I also think that it helps to go across the article, like you are making stripes-but they touch-from side to side (the Krylon sprayer has a cool little directional thing that you can rotate to go up and down, side to side or whatever works) and stop the spray between stripes spray off of the article, you don't want to be pointing the sprayer at the article when you press the button to start the spray because you will be more prone to getting too much all at once and getting a drip. (I hope that makes sense, it is hard to describe).

If you miss a spot or don't get enough to cover, which is actually what I go for-because I know I am not getting too much on at once, just let it sit for a bit and then do another coat, and on until you have a nice consistent coat of paint.

I love the blue with the blue, I think that it will be quite a beautiful look! When you are done, please post pictures, if you can figure out how (unlike me  ).

For the cream, I would love to see a nice taupe or khaki interior, I think that would be pretty-in a sensible-pair-of-shoes kind of look.
If you want to get away from the black, but stay dark you could go with the "Patriotic Blue" (not quite a royal blue, but kind of close) and that would look nice, a tad boring, but more interesting than the black.
Something a bit more daring (IMHO) would be to go with a red, like their "Sun Dried Tomato" which is a warm medium red or the "Red Pepper" which I think is a beautiful color and would look lovely with cream.
Now, I love green and think that their "Ivy Leaf" is a fabulous color, but you gotta like that color-and some people loathe that color. :)

This is going to be fun.

I might have to see if my friend Dutch  will let me borrow his garage since I don't have one of my own and with my luck I will get some damn Japanese Beetle landing in my perfect paint job and making a mess of it if I do it at my house.

We used Montana Gold (I think that was its name Montana something...) and it seemed to do well.
