Scootergate 2010 - Washington, DC

Scootergate 2010 is running from June 4-6 in DC. Modern Classics (a recent Genuine dealer in DC) is one of the main sponsors, and it should be a good time. Registration is up, and there are plenty of hotels in the area. Check on Hotels.com or something similar, it is peak tourist season, so they fill up fast. Unfortunately the CORSA and CORSette races are for vintage 50's only, but there looks to be plenty of events, rides, and good times for everyone.

Clarification: The Corsette is for vintage smallframes (usually running 90cc engines, but some of the "girls" have souped-up rides), and the Corsa is for vintage bikes of all sizes.

PS: I'll see you there! I may or may not have a scooter to ride because there's no way in hell I'm riding down Route 1 from Philly all by my lonesome. All the Philly folks who are coming down are doing the Corsa, sigh.

I'm planning a ride up to Long Island to visit family, but I too am leery of Rt. 1 for several stretches. I've been toying with google maps to plan a strickly backroads and farm roads route, except for major cities of course. Every time I get up to Philly, I've made so many turns that it seems to lock up the browser and I lose my data. Once you get into MD, I'd go with MD-7 (Philadelphia Rd), crossing the Susq at Havre de Grace (US40), then 7 again all the way to the Baltimore area, then between Balt and DC, there are an abundance of relatively easy backroads. It's also a nice ride with at least 1 other. It looks like the safest Del River crossing is the Tacony Bridge, everything else is too fast. I can't wait to grab a hot one from Geno's.

The Tacony Bridge is great, yes.

Unfortunately, I'm not comfortable doing long distance riding by myself. A bunch of us rode to the Charm City Scooter Rally in Baltimore a few years ago, and it was fine. Route 1 all the way, even though there's a stretch of 55mph by Kennett Square (close to Philly).

sweet! A contingent from Philly. I highly recommend MD Route 7 (Phila Rd) from Havre de Grace to Baltimore, less traffic, few trucks, and safer speeds. I look forward to meeting you all.
