Are they auto choke models? (aka auto enrichiner) Sounds like a possible combo of a stuck auto choke/ air fuel ratio being a bit off. If you're not comfortable with carbs start with the easy stuff. Remove the bowl on the bottom of the carb. Usually two screws and you're done. Check and see if that looks clean, if that's all tarnished/ gunked up good chance the rest of the carb is. Put it back together and get someone to clean the carb for you. Two screws out, two screws in... shouldn't be too intimidating.
If you want to try to blow the blockage out you can try what worked on my Rattler this season. Remove the air filter from the carb. Cover the intake with the palm of your hand and crank the motor. The compression from the motor should be able to move any blockage at that point. If all else fails PM vespatech... he's got a TGB too.

thats MRs old tgb
He sold it a few months ago and since has been sitting in my shop.
it has starting issues but it is because a small piece of plastic got stuck in motor from the owner kicking it. May just need a rebuild I havent read any of your symptoms. but be sure to check your compression anything less than 150 I personally would rebuild with a better quality cylinder and piston.
