Planning Ahead - Best Substitute W/W Tires for Stella?

Post by Silver Streak »

Even though my 4T Stella remains in EPA limbo, there's no reason I can't plan ahead a little. I like the idea of whitewalls on the scoot, but want to get rid of the Savas that come with it, as they have a terrible rep. I asked the dealer if he could swap out the tires for Continental whitewalls, but he claimed he couldn't get them and suggested Shinkos instead. Now I see the thread under General Discussion that seems to indicate that Shinkos might be as bad as the Savas.

I've heard good things about the Continentals and have recently discovered that Scooterworks sells a Prima whitewall that looks to have more of a sport-type tread (presumably a re-branded tire from some far-Eastern source).

Anybody know anything about the Primas or have any strong opinions?

I've had (and have heard) pretty good experiences with Savas on vintage scooters, but I don't have a Stella and I don't think I've ever tried the whitewalls.

They're owned by Goodyear and made in mighty Slovenia.

(Disclaimer: I'm 1/8 Slovenian)

That's interesting to hear. Savas are very much reviled over at Modern Vespa.

I would like to know some scooterist suggestions for WW's as well
The Vintage catalog from Scooterworks showed up in yesterdays mail & I was thinking those might look nice on my Stella

Not THAT small! At least the shift pattern is not like French Army tanks: one speed forward and four in reverse.

My late wife was half Slovenian and half Croatian... hands across the border (and other body parts as well, apparently).

The Prima whitewalls with the modern sport tread LOOK good, but I'd like to hear about some real-world experience with them.

If I decide to stick with whitewalls, I'll probably first try the Maxxis whitewalls on the Buddy Internationals.

So far, I'm not impressed by the Savas but I've become picky about tires. On the other hand, I don't think the stock Stella 4T needs a high performance sport tire.

Shinko's are lame and in my experience can be quite squirrely. I've heard good things of both the Prima and Maxxis.

the shinkos arent worth a crap
i wore out one rear in less then 4000 miles and now with only about 2000 miles on it the spare that i put on the rear is looking bad

i was thinking about the conintal white walls if i stick with whit walls or getting the fake white wall inserts then i can get what ever i want for tires

I thought I heard the Maxxis whitewalls were discontinued.

I thought maybe Scooterwest had the Maxxis but their site is down right now so I couldn't check.

Shinko also makes a performance style white wall, but I've never heard of anyone trying them.
Probably because they only come in a 12"

I also want white walls on my new genuine Stella 4T. shopping online, somewhere, one seller had and asterisk that noted that the Continental White Wall tire would Not fit on the rear of a Stella 4T.

Does anyone have any experience with this or know if it is true or not? If so, is there any other modification to allow them to work? Lengthen, strengthen the rear shock??

I want really sticky white walls, and won't put Shinko crap on it. Want safety and stickiness Only, don't care about tire life.

'Prima' seems to be the only other W/W in the size we need for the Stella and Buddy.
I've liked the ride they provide but they seem to wear very quickly.

I have Continental WW on my new Stella Auto. The ride is good and I haven't been too aggressive with them. A little pricey, but tires are one of those things I do not mind splurging on. Safety First!!

Pics in Scooter Gallery: 'New Stella Automatic - Let the fun begin' if you want to look at them on the scooter.

I was at Scooterworks last summer, and they said that some Stellas do indeed have rear wheel rub with the whitewalls, esp the Primas. They said if you experience wheel rub, get a second set of wheel washers, and mount them on the studs before mounting the wheel, and this should take care of it.

Looks like Motorcycle Superstore has the Continentals in stock along with several other offerings.
