Added a UNI filter....
Well in the search for more power and and top speed, I decided to add a UNI filter and jetted up to 130. (thank you to Scooter Trash for his example of what a proper UNI filter installed looks like)
Over the weekend I tested it and found it to be a little peppier from 40-55 but that was about it. So after a plug check we found it was running a little lean. So my mech is drilling out the jet a bit, not sure what to yet, guessing 132 or 135. I will find out this afternoon. In addition I am adding a iridium plug today, once the jetting has been figured out.
I have a Bando race CDI and Coil coming in the mail. So I will keep you guys posted on how things improve. If these changes don't improve my top speed I will probably switch my 12g dr pulley sliders to 11g, for added pep around town(not that it needs it;)

Ok got Jack back and it looks like I was a little optimistic on the jetting;) So I think they went with about a 133 jet.... They want me to come back in 4 days to do one more plug check.

Noticeably louder. Its an obvious sucking noise. I had to clean it fairly frequently because I was having oil blowback issues into the filter at high speed. Under normal conditions this won't happen.Tocsik wrote:How loud is the intake with the Uni in place?
How frequently do you need to clean it (under normal conditions)?

Please do. The rear fender is ugly!threar wrote:Ah yes, now I see the big open shaft of light. I'd really like to see the outside view. (Off topic:) Might be my motorcycle talking, but I'd love to clean up some of the tail section, perhaps even pulling off the rear fender.

For the license plate, I was thinking something along these lines:
http://www.1tail.com/productImages_thumbBIG/35198
Might have to figure out how to fab/modify something, but perhaps there's a mount point freed up by the airbox-delete.

So question, we have been messing with the jet trying to get it right. The plug check looks good but I am have a bogging issue at between 1/3 and 1/2 throttle. What steps should we take from here? Should we change out the secondary jet (is it the same style or different, where do you get replacements if it is a different style from the main jet?) or is the and air/fuel mixture issue, or idle screw issue. Feels pretty good at WOT but still not the topspeed I would like. Also I have a race cdi and coil coming, will they help any of these issues? I ask because of the removal of the rev limiter And timing advances.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Absolutely! I bobbed my rear fender and added a reflective red stripe to the rear wheel cover.Kaos wrote:Please do. The rear fender is ugly!threar wrote:Ah yes, now I see the big open shaft of light. I would love to hear some ideas on adding an extension-type mud flap to that piece though. My back and/or backpack get pretty splattered now

Sounds like you need to shim your needle jet. I had to shim my brothers and he had far less modsMr Miller wrote:So question, we have been messing with the jet trying to get it right. OK, so the jet needle is not adjustable, this is why we need to shim it. Is this correct?
And doing that should in theory adjust the fuel at that throttle position, because it is probably running a little lean in said throttle position. And we think it is running lean because it is crackly sounding and a little jerky while held at say 1/3 throttle.

No not this time, I highly recommend Buggy Parts NW though. Mike is a great guy very helpful. I hear he has a fantastic adjustable cdi and coil set, but I needed to keep costs down with all this jetting stuff going on....

I wonder why Genuine doesn't automatically upjet the 150's since they have a slightly larger displacement; especially the BJacks since they are intended to have the Prima pipe

Your 'Jack is lookin' very stylish!
Have you experienced any issues with riding in rain having the sponge-like filter exposed (or hear of any issues?) I ride in any weather unless it's snow or ice so that would be an issue.

Jetting isn't about displacement, it's about mixing air and fuel. The 125 and 150 Buddies have the same intake and exhaust. The Blackjacks are supposed to come with 3 extra jets to use since the free-er flowing exhaust will make it more temperamental to it's atmospheric conditions.Tocsik wrote:Gracias!Mr Miller wrote:Stock is 95 jet, not sure what to go to after air box mods. At least people are willing to accept that you need to upjet with the pipe, lol. When I did mine, I was told vehemently that there was no need to rejet with the addition of the Prima pipe.

Update:)
So they shimmed the needle with one of the magic radio shack washers, rode it. Still boggy. 2 washers, pretty good. 3 washers, much worse. So back to 2 they went:) a couple more plug checks looked good so I think we have it.
Also added a Race CDI and Coil and an Iridium plug, can't wait to test it tonight after work!

How do you oil it?Kaos wrote:Just oil it properly and its basically waterproof.
I don't have a UNI filter, just the stock one. But I noticed in the manual, it says to spray the filter with 5 grams of 10W30 after blowing it out with compressed air. How the heck to you "spray" 10W30? I have no idea how to atomize automotive oil. I don't want to have to resort to putting 10W30 in my mouth and spewing it on my air filter.

I saw some "SuperTech Spray Lubricant" in the automotive section at Walmart that uses petrolium distillates. Would that work?

Uni has a kit with two cans in it. One is a cleaner, the other is oil. I'm sure wherever you buy it would at least have the oil. But that's for uni brand oil. Probably not the cheapest.ScooterTrash wrote:Air filter oilk1dude wrote:How do you oil it?Kaos wrote:Just oil it properly and its basically waterproof.

Uh I don't know about the supertech... I know UNI makes a spray oil for the filter, or you can use a K&N filter oil. You can find the K&N spray at most auto parts stores:)k1dude wrote:How do you oil it?Kaos wrote:Just oil it properly and its basically waterproof.

Not so great, still sputtering at mid throttle, I think it was even worse than beforegearhead wrote:how did the ride go?

I noticed that it was racing at idle so I turned the idle down as far as I could, and that actually helped with the mid throttle sputtering quite a bit. But it is still there. I am pretty positive it is running too rich in the middle...
So I am going to take it to the Voodoo Guru (Kaos) next Saturday, if anyone can get Jack running right he can:)
So hopefully I will have some better news next weekend!
Thanks again Kaos, for the invite up!

Turning the idle down wont affect anything, it just pushes on the throttle. Unless you turn the mix screw which is a no no if you don't know what you're doing. Good call on taking it to Kaos. sounds like this shop is below par as wellMr Miller wrote:Not so great, still sputtering at mid throttle, I think it was even worse than beforegearhead wrote:how did the ride go?![]()

Just curious.

Great job btw.

Yeah should have listened to you and your warnings:/ but live and learn I suppose. Sometimes it sucks living in a small town... We had 3 or 4 motorcycle shops in town a couple of years ago but with the economy we are down to 1.5ish.

Thanks:) it is a custom seat, I bought a stock seat and had it recovered similar to the black jack's seat (but with nicer materials and some more foam) it was about $50 to get it done:)

Thanks:) it is a custom seat, I bought a stock seat and had it recovered similar to the black jack's seat (but with nicer materials and some more foam) it was about $50 to get it done:)

Wow, that's defo worth looking into then. I love the look, sans my pink piping, and would love to have some more padding.Mr Miller wrote:"Mr Miller,
What seat is that that you have on there? It's not the BJ seat is it? If so, the piping looks way different than mine. Mine is also sunbleached pink at this point.
Just curious.
Yours looks like a custom stock seat.
Great job btw.
