I have a VersaHauler which I use on a 30 foot RV. When my Buddy is loaded on the VersaHauler, it is just rock solid, doesn’t wobble or rattle as I drive. Note that I am using a 30 foot RV. My opinion is that if you want to use a hitch mounted carrier like a VersaHauler or TiltARack then you need to step up to a pretty heavy duty truck which will have a strong enough frame and suspension to support the weight of the Buddy, something like a Nissan Titan.

Poly, I have a versa hauler VH50 that I use frequently on the back of my Dodge Magnum - Class II receiver is all you really need. The VH50 is limited to 250#, plenty for the TGB 50, Honda Met, and Mrs' Buddy125. I am reluctant to put the Blur on it as it is slightly over the weight limit - but if I need to get it to PhillyScoots I'll do it. I hauled the Buddy home from North Carolina when we bought it and had no issues. We take it to the beach and back once or twice a summer. I also have a 4x8 trailer (similar to the HF one shown above) with a plywood deck and some treated lumber that I can haul 2 scoots and lots of other items on if I need the capacity.

And then there is always the question of whether your back is strong enough to put the hauler in the hitch.
Don't they run about 70-80 pounds?

mine is no where near 70# (maybe 30-40), I have no problem at all carrying it or taking it off but it is kinda awkward to install (since it's usually Mrs' scoot being hauled she helps me plug it in). I have done it solo but it is easier with help and getting the scoot strapped in is definately quicker with someone to steady it

This is a bit misleading. My VW Jetta has a class II hitch which I use to pull a light scooter trailer. I would no more put 300+ pounds of Versahauler and scooter on that vehicle than I would put a cow in the backseat.

 I can understand how you might find the parsed quote misleading but I explained that I have hauled my <250# scooters with no issues many times. I highlighted the text because a previous post indicated that VersaHauler's required a Class III - which is incorrect if not misleading :?

I imagine a cow would exceed the limit of the VH50 at 250#

Correct. Towing capacity and tongue weight are totally different and, from what I understand, somewhat independent of class of hitch.

for the record, the tounge weight capacity for my Magnum w/ ClassII hitch receiver is 300#

the point is that you can use a VH50 with a ClassII hitch - it even comes w/ both receiver adapters. I have a spare ClassIII adapter if anyone wants it.

Hitch tongue weight capacity is not referring to a cantilevered load.
Leverage amplifies the effect of the load, but we all know that, right?

You need to contact the hitch manufacturer to get the load capacity for your vehicle loaded in that manner. It will be less than posted or listed.

Sorry, no experience with a VersaHaul or TiltaRack but if you're entertaining the idea of getting a vehicle that would allow you to haul your scooter inside I would suggest the Honda Element. They don't exactly get stellar gas mileage with 20 city & 25 hwy but are super practical. With the rear seats flipped up and/or removed there is a ton of room in the back. You'd be surprised at what you could fit back there.

Versa-haul Thumbs up!

Post by ryder1 »

I have a TrailBlazer and use a Versa-haul. I ruled out a trailer because honestly I have trouble backing up with a trailer attached to my vehicle.

The Versa-haul takes a bit of oomph! to get it up the short ramp but once on there and the ratchet straps secure the Buddy does not wobble at all. My first trip to the scooter deal which is 35 miles from my house was nerve racking, but the Buddy stayed secure.

Versa-haul takes up very little storage when not in use.

No complaints on the Versa-haul but it does help to have two people the first several times you use it.

Not sure about your specific trailer brands, but from what I've heard just about any car can pull a trailer if you can get a mount on it (with certain weight restrictions).

I went to a rally recently with another scooterist in town and his wife's Prius transported our scooters. :)

The Versahaul is much different because the weight isn't towed, it's carried on the hitch. You need something with a Class III hitch and a tongue weight capacity of (whatever) to avoid screwing up your car. One of these most definitely would not work with a Prius!
