The Mod Scooter Experience, Back to the Future

Post by MOD MIKE »

Having grown up in 1960's, I aways related to the MOD style and way of life; the scooters, clothes and music of the era. I would be interested in hearing from those of us who remember and appreciate the Mods in the United Kingdom. I'm sure i'm not the only one. Open for discussion.

When you say "those of us who remember and appreciate the Mods in the United Kingdom" are you English?

I guess I would be one of the most 'experienced' of British Mod culture around here. I was a child of the 70's, born and lived in Brighton until 2005 when I emigrated to the US.

I remember the continuous procession of scooters driving into Brighton on the A23 on any Bank Holiday weekend in the summer.

I am looking for some pictures, that I will post if and when I find them! My dad was a fully 'Parkered' up scooter riding mod of the 60's, not sure if he has any oldies he can scan, but have emailed a request to him!

To me the mod culture was the smartness of the clothes - Nice suit, Fred Perry Polo shirts, Ben Sherman, The Parker coat - with squirrels tail attached, Stay Pressed 'Pants', Nice shoes, etc
The music; early days The Who, The Kinks, Ska / Northern Soul, progressing to The Jam, The Style Council, Paul Weller (AKA 'The Mod Father') I was in Brighton the day of the very last Jam concert and there was the most mods I have EVER seen!

This one is my fave soul blog (not specifically Mod, but ya know): http://oldsoulmusic.tumblr.com/

In conclusion, I love Tumblr. FIN.

There is some great video footage, both old & new on youtube; search east end mods. To my surprise, these holiday weekenders are still huge events.
