here's the lineup outside my office... a bunch of motorcycles and a few scoots... it was quite a lineup that day... usually it's only myself, two other scoots, and one or two motorcycles...

Very cool! Do you work in Cambridge? If so, where? I used to live in the Boston area and lived in East Cambridge (pre-gentrification).

Back in the dark ages of my early adulthood (early 80's) I lived on Pearl Street, off Central Square. Use to be a Dunkin Doughnuts on the corner of Pearl and Mass Ave and a Steve's Ice Cream in easy walking distance.

Aha! Another Orange Buddy in Cambridge... (Here is a picture of mine from about a month ago on its first day in town- after a quick "ride" in the elevator up to the apartment while I ran out and bought a lock.)

NO WAY! another orange buddy in cambridge!!! that's awesome... i haven't seen you out... i work in kendall square along the river... i live in the middle of the triangle between kendall and inman and central... i'm mostly just scooting to work around the kendall area or down to back bay to pick up my wife from work... rad... hope to see you out sometime...

That's pretty much where I used to live! I always bragged that I lived halfway between Rosie's Bakery and Toscanini's Ice Cream. They may both be gone, for all I know, or they may have moved since then.

Damn, I wish I could remember the name of the street I lived on.

But Lobsterman, I do remember the Dunkin' Donuts you're talking about. See? At least I haven't forgotten the important things: desserts.

yeah, it's an indoor cell phone pic... though I kind of like the orange-chocolate buddy look.

was there last night... great place... but for my larger shopping trips it's gotta be the basket... market basket... basically half the price of shaw's for the same quality... trader joe's is excellent for quality healthy food though... oh and for 2-buck-chuck

alex - where are you in cambridge? where do you ride most often? kendall? harvard? central? porter? all the way up in the great north of alewife?

I live across from the Harvard Law School in Cambridge. I've ridden it mostly around Harvard and Porter Sq., up around Fresh Pond and Belmont. It's made rides to Watertown easier too. I've gone into Boston across the Longfellow Bridge a couple of times (I work in Chinatown), but haven't found many places I'm comfortable parking it around work. The first day I got the scoot I rode around Allston/Brighton and down Commonwealth Ave, and across the BU bridge... First impression is that the drivers in Cambridge seem to be a little more aware of scooters, especially on weekends when it seems like there's a motorcycle, scooter, or bike every couple blocks.

...I'm thinking of riding down to Providence, RI (Javaspeed) for the 500 mi. checkup if I can figure out a non-expressway drive.

If you leave Camridge, there's a Trader Joe's here in Cincinnati. I happen to be a fan of Fat Weasel beer myself.

For good highway alternatives, try using http://maps.google.com/ for directions and select "avoid highways".

also... the google maps directions to providence while avoiding highways would unfortunately not be suitable for a b50... it recommends rt1 pretty much the whole way and you gotta do a consistent 40-60mph to travel that stretch safely... i've lived almost my whole life in various places between providence and boston... it's quite a trek but i'd recommend this way for the safest but most direct route:

Well, Alex shows a 125 as his ride, and I confess I assume that for most riders who discuss going any long distance on their scooter. A 125 should be fine on that route I would think.

When I lived in the Boston/Cambridge area, the drivers -- despite their bad reputation -- were far more aware and considerate of bicyclists than the drivers here in DC. I was an anti-bike helmet rider while I lived up there (I thought they looked geeky), but literally one week after I moved to the DC area, I went out and bought a helmet, because the drivers' cluelessness about bikes made it so much more unsafe to ride around here. I wouldn't be surprised if the same was true about driver awareness of scooters.

And on the Trader Joe's issue: we've got 'em around here, too. None close enough to my house to make it worth shopping there regularly, unfortunately.

I was stationed at Fort Devens, MA, a long, long time ago. Our transportation was a "communal" VW bug that kept finding its way to Boston. Had a tough time getting used to "Regular" coffee having cream and sugar. Never had to "order" black coffee before.
