new 2009 rough house exhaust smells like burning plastic

Post by neddypot »

i took a 2009 rough house for a test ride today. It was fun, but I'm worried because when i was idling, the exhaust smelled really bad, like burning plastic more than burning oil (as the rider of a 1978 honda hobbit, i'm used the oil smell).

is this at all normal? they claimed it was a normal two-stroke smell. the bike has a little over 200 miles. the shop said they got it from another shop that went out of business. another, possibly smell related concern, is that, it's out of the break-in period, but i'm assuming, since it's probably just been test ridden a bunch, that no one followed any kind of break-in guidelines.

is buying this bike a bad idea, like my gut is telling me? they offered to sell it for $1800. does that seem fair and cheap enough, given the above factors? finally, how much does a used rough house in good condition go for these days?

thanks!! ned

I just bought a 2009 Rattler and it gives off that new hot motor smell. It only had 15 miles on it when I got it. You may just need to get it hot to burn off any oils on the motor. This thing sips the 2 stroke oil.

Yep my 110 Ratt drinks 2t oil like its water on a Hot day. I tried something new other than the Motul which I get from my club. We were out of 710. So I had to go else where to get 2t oil. I got some and I can smell the new motor aroma. But I have almost 7000 miles on my bike. I think its the oil. The Motul doesnt make that Odor. But I kind like the smell of this 2t oil. Reminds me I am riding a TWO STROKE. HELL YA!!! Could be just the kinda of oil the dealer put into your bike.

You could try the two stroke oil that smells like strawberries when it burns. I really want to sniff that stuff.

Had a guy here in town running the strawberry stuff in a buddy50 with a 70 cc kit. You CAN smell the strawberries..As bad as it is to be sniffing exhaust we were all standing under a car port taking a whiff. ! Hilarious!

I have always liked the motul or spectro stuff myself. Works great...

That plastic smell? just make sure there isn't some protective plastic film stuck somewhere under the bike? But yeah, prolly just new oils burning off

If it was brand new on the showroom floor, it definitely could have something spilled on it from setup. Maybe go back and see if you could test drive another one. I know once the pipe is hot anything plastic would stick instantly. Like say, a grocery sack.

Those flying plastic bags will always aim for exhaust. I've never had a chrome pipe without scars from a plastic bag.

Be sure to check you don't have an exhaust gasket leak....

I wouldn't be too concerned, but $1800 for floor model doesn't strike me as the deal of a lifetime. Ridden by novices and an unusual break-in to save... $200? I don't think you'll have problems but I would want more than $200 off for that.

My 2009 RH50 exhaust smells placticky too. That is just the way this bike smells. My Yamahas all smelled more oily. Ride on, not a problem.
