2T Stella Top Speed

Post by thumbuddy »

What is the approx top speed for a stock 2T Stella. Mine is an 09 with a little over 500 miles. This afternoon I reached 57 indicated and 52 on my iphone speedometer. I thought the Stella would be a bit quicker and boy does it ever slow down when it sees a hill. My Buddy 125 is a good bit quicker.

The 2 stroke Stellas seemed on average to top out around 55-60mph. Mine was 55mph on a good day, but that saw alot of use and not always the best of attention since it was my daily driver and had a few "quirks". I sold it with 30,000 on the clock and it was still going strong.

500 miles isn't even really broken in yet. The more you ride it, the more it will loosen up and you should start seeing better top-end speed. I would swap out the gearbox oil since you're just breaking it in. I did mine at about 700 miles when I bought it, and there was tons of little bits from it being a new scoot. Shifting got even smoother after that.

Thanks. I changed the gear oil at 250 miles, per my dealer suggestion. Didn't see any metal pieces and didn't notice any difference in shifting. I had hoped it would ease my occasional trouble getting into first at a stop. I have started shifting into 1st while on a roll.

Did you try a clutch adjustment at the arm and at the cable? That usually solves the rough-shift into first. Give it a double check and make sure that there isn't any play down there and that may help.

Sometimes a little rocking back and forth will help slide into 1st

Your performance sounds about right for a stock 2T with the amount of miles on it. It will do a little bit better once completely broken in, but unless you put in a freer flowing (louder!) pipe and jetting to match, that's about it.
Of course you will always have people claim how their stock bike does 65 easily etc etc, but those claims are, how shall I say, unrealistic.

As a comparison, the top speed of a stock PX200 is about 60mph. And that of course has a bigger motor than the Stella.

Buddies are much quicker..

I can easily hit 60 on either of my stock stellas. If I'm going down hill.... with a good wind at my back.

Same stock top end. Granted, I was having some idle issues and near to the end of things I didn't ride it as much, so the carb could've used a good going over. I ended up selling it to pay for moving costs to a new city and a new job that I ended up losing 6 months later. After moving back to Phoenix, I kicked myself for selling it  fixing it would've been soooo cheap

2T Stella Top Speed

Post by klow »

My 09 Stella 2T has under 400 miles, and I've had difficulties getting it into 1st gear at a stop, too. Initially I thought that it was my inexperience with the scooter, but I've found that by shifting into neutral at the stop, then double clutching allows a smoother shift into 1st. As for top speed, so far its just cracked 50 mph. I'm looking forward to the end of the break-in period.

You still have a bit before you really settle that motor in. My Stella didn't get into it's groove until about 1500 miles (I bought it with 700 on it). Changing the gear oil, believe it or not, will help a ton with hard shifts. I changed mine 4 times in the first 1k miles I owned it, and it soon smoothed out to a pleasant shift. Keeping that clutch cable tight at the headset and at the lower shift arm always helps too.

I got Audrey up to 60 going downhill, had an "Oh ****!" moment, and slowed way the hell down.

I have gotten an indicated 64mph on my 05 Stella. Mods to the power plant include a Sito Plus Exhaust and a Mazzucchelli Crank Shaft. Frankly, it gets a bit uncomfortable on those small wheels once I hit 50mph so top end doesn't mean as much to me as the additional power now available 0-50mph.

With a sito+ flat road, 5500 feet elevation, my bike will hold 55-60 indicated. I cruise a 55mph (rural) US Highway regularly and don't seem to slow folks down. If I wot, I can get it to 65 indicated, but I don't like to hold that very long for fear of burning down the motor.

The stock pipe is very restrictive, and a sito does not really make it much louder. It is a great upgrade.
Valves are for wussies.

I can't see how double clutching makes any difference on a Vespa based transmission. Typical double clutching is to pull the clutch...shift to neutral,..release the clutch, rev to spin up the tranny....engage the clutch again...shift and release the clutch.

Keep in mind that a 2T Stella has a basic basic basic basic transmission system. Unlike a manual car transmission, especially the presynchro ones, there really isnt anything to "spin up" by double clutching.

When you shift all it is really doing is moving the cruciform to lock up the selected gear combination. Neutral is just a small space where the cruciform can sit without engaging any of the combinations between the layshaft and the grear stack. All I can see it doing is beating on and wearing the cruciform early by shifting at a higher rpm. Well it's probably not great for the cush drive either. This isn't the fast and the furious!

If your at a light and having trouble getting into first rock back and forth a little. That helps take the pressure off the cruciform and allows it to slide into the 1st gear position giving you that oh so pleasing "clunk"!

If I were to install a Sito, will I need to get a different carb jet or whatever it is?

You would need to change your jets to a bigger size with a Sito+ a straight Sito is pretty much like stock.

I hear ya......freezing an engine isn't much fun. I did that once, never again. I keep Stella in comfortable ranges for both her and myself. Hmmm, 5,500 ft......Denver?

I don't want to go any faster than 55 on my Stella, a good wind gust and I can feel the front wheel lift off the ground :P
