near your ring finger from shifting? I have this blister or bruise caused from my ring being pinched when I shift.

FYI it is not a good idea to wear rings while riding any moto.
It is possible for them to become distorted and crush your finger in a crash. With the only way the pressure can be relieved is if someone has a tool to cut the ring off.

Back on topic, do you wear gloves when you ride?

I have a small callous at the base of my ring finger (despite often not wearing my ring when riding). Had it even before riding a shifty!

desmolicious, I never thought about gloves. I wear gloves when cycling in the winter but I never about it when scootering, especially in this 98 degree Georgia heat. What are the better gloves for scooters?

My own opinion is to never scooter without gloves. One look at the hands of someone who has gone down without gloves will give you nightmares for the rest of your life. For summer riding there are mesh backed gloves of various designs. My personal summer favorite are Petzl rock climbing gloves (available from REI)

You'll want gloves. I always wear them, even in the rare instances when I'm not wearing a jacket.

Motorcycle-specific gloves are best, but even a lot of those can be kind of wimpy. My basic requirements are extra protection in the palms and knuckles and double stitching on the seams. My heavier gloves also have reflective piping/details.

Thanks Eric, any suggestion for specific models or makers that you've liked over time?

Ya gotta wear the gloves! It will greatly reduce your ring issues.
There are lots of nice ventilated ones on the market.
I really like Alpinestars, but check this link:

Best thing is to go to any moto shop and start trying them on.
If you have a cyclegear near you, they nearly always have a good selection.

I don't have moto gloves. Back when I started to ride about 35 years back, I really liked handball gloves, as they were made out of leather (won't melt in a slide), had a bit of mesh on the back for fit and ventilation, and had great padded palms. The racquetball weenies killed the sport so gloves are harder to find, but I've found similar leather gloves at Harbor Freight under the Western Safety brand.

I wear either motocross gloves during the summer and heavy motorcycle gloves in the winter, and no problems with the ring here. And, my ring is a Tungsten Carbide with custom inlay, so there is no risk of it "crushing" my hand in an accident: Simply won't happen. Under pressure it will simply shatter apart if the forces get that strong (and, being 3 times stronger than steel it would take QUITE alot of pressure. I'm sure if it gets to that point, my wedding ring is the least of my worries), and it has a melting point of about 2,700 degrees. It's also said to be one of the easiest metals to remove by EMT's in an emergency medical procedure: Vice locks can simply shatter the ring without damage to the finger pretty easy (with proper training of course) if it does need to come off, no crushing.

So, needless the say this ring is NOT coming off my finger for ANY reason, which is the way it should be :D

Gloves are one of those things that I've tried to save money on and regretted it. My summer gloves wore out and I got a pair of clearance gloves on sale at Cycle Gear. They started coming apart after a month!

My favorite pair is some Belstaffs I've had for 5 years or so, but they've been discontinued for some time. They're similar to these:
Image
Unfortunately, the velcro closures need to be replaced. So to tide me over until I take them to a leather shop (I like them that much!), I recently got a pair of these Hein Gerickes which are pretty nice:

For summer gloves, I haven't had much luck. Most of the light/medium weight ones I've had have worn out pretty quickly. I've owned probably 4 or 5 brands. SO, I'm shopping around again, hopefully a little smarter than in the past.

Some good deals:

I always gear up when riding and that includes leather gloves. I also replaced the original clutch lever with a Dog Leg Lever that shortens the reach for the lever. For me, it was far more comfortable and reduced strain on long rides.

For warm weather...and we have a lot of that...I like Cortech textile and scorpion. I have found that lighter colors REALLY make a difference!

I know I need gloves but I also need that too. Where can I get those and are they easy to install? Anything that will reduce the clutch lever travel just a bit would be great.

Dog Leg Levers really are nice. I have relatively small hands and this was a great solution. Check out Scooterworks:

Also, contact Phil Waters, owner of Pride Of Cleveland Scooters. He did the installation for me and I'm sure he would be happy to provide you with whatever info you need.

Huh, just looked at my hands and noticed the callouses that have been there for years. That's from going to the gym. Maybe I should be wearing gloves in there? I wear them riding there..

Huh. Never noticed before it was mentioned, but you're right: There IS a noticeably thicker callous behind my ring on my finger. Dunno why I never noticed it...

I've been widowed for two years, and mine has just gone away.

Now I'm engaged to marry again October 1, so I guess it'll be back!

Marrying someone who already rides is MUCH easier than trying to make a scooterist out of someone you're already married to. :)

To paraphrase the Broadway show "South Pacific": They have to be carefully taught.

Deborah's father was a rider, and she had a Honda CT70 and her motorcycle endorsement as a teenager.

When I started dating her last fall, she hadn't ridden in many years. She re-caught the bug riding cupcake on my scoots, and I bought her the Buddy for her birthday last March so that she'd have her own ride. She's a natural rider; it all came back to her very quickly.

I think you never really lose that love of being on two wheels, the desire just sits dormant for a while until you meet someone that rides, or a shiny new bike crosses your path at a 4 way stop, or you're reading a mag or a Genuine catalog and the centerfold catches your eye. She had it in her blood; you thankfully just unleashed it for her.

My wife had never been on two wheels until we went to Greece and rented a scooter, since then she's been talking about scooters; see, now it’s in her blood.

Best of luck to you and your wife to be; stay happy, stay safe and keep on scooter-in’.

Dog Legs are available for both sides but I just did the clutch side. The left hand is a bit busier than the right. It works for me.

That makes me laff! IT's so true. The one thing I didn't realize when I bought my Stella was how much maintenance I would put off so I could keep riding. Anything that isn't needed to keep her running and wont cause damage waits until the snow comes.

Funny though I don't ride a Stella, but reading this made me check. Even though my wife and I split up 11 years ago I can still feel the 'ring ridge' on my finger......

Hehehe.. Ring ridge aye. Mine hasn't left my hand in 28 years. I've got a ridge going on the other hand now with a Celtic ring for our 25th.

However, i've never noticed it when I rode with a clutch. Gloves distribute the pressure nicely.
