Yes, Happy Thanksgiving all.

It's going to be a bit happier for me this year, and for a completely selfish reason: I'm having steak, wild rice, spinach, and a nice green salad for dinner. After years of putting up with turkey, sweet potatoes, and the other traditional foods that I happen to loathe, I decided to cook a separate dinner menu for myself.

Whatever you do, enjoy yourselves mightily.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

This is going to be my first Thanksgiving on two wheels...and the forecast high is above SIXTY degrees-we'll be flirting with record territory!

But I don't know whether I'll get to ride today or not; I've been invited to dinner at my BFF's Mom's house ninety miles away.

And THAT'S what I'm truly thankful for. I have a friend who considers me family.

I hope all the Americans on the board have a wonderful day. And I thank all the global peeps for putting up with us.

*HUGS*

Yes it is pecan pie and yes it is homemade. The secrete ingredient is to replace the corn syrup with maple. Guess its not a secrete anymore.

Somewhere on Fuelly there's a formula for the banner. Just copy and past to your sig (edit your profile). Thing is, after your set up your signature, you have to click the 'attach signature' box every time you post; I usually forget haha.

As for mpg... do you use Seafoam or Star Tron or anything to combat ethanol? I was advised to always use it.

That's also the secret to good pancakes. Heck, avoiding corn syrup is the secret to a lot of good things.

Hopefully everyone had a good food-coma day :D

Unfortunately our Thanksgiving plans of hosting our first Turkey Day as a married couple were thrown out the window because my wife was required to work Thanksgiving for a DOUBLE SHIFT (see posted rant about that later on). So, only some of the family was visited. Grateful for that, but nothing like what we planned.

So, who's got the best turkey leftover recipe?

I love Thanksgiving, possibly my favorite holiday. I don't care about its either politically-incorrect or corporate origins. As far as I'm concerned it's about nothing more than getting together with friends, cooking a lot of food, drinking good wine and having a fine day. I like roasting the bird, making cranberries, the whole bit. And, yes, I love T-Day food! I love hearing about all the weird stuff that's become family traditions for many people. I love the hearing about the things many folks make once a year but are downright religious about. I won't necessarily eat it, but I appreciate it.

We had a good year, though a bit more traditional than in the past. Just felt like it. No complex gourmet stuffing, no squash soup, nothing too ambitious.
neotrotsky wrote:So, who's got the best turkey leftover recipe?
Saturday I'll carve up the rest of our bird (half of it left!) and then drop the carcass in the stock pot to get the rest of the mean off it and make some stock. The stock will get frozen, eventually used to make soup. The meat that comes off is small chunks of mixed white and dark. Some will go into the soup if I make it this week. The rest is for chili!

Its my favorite holiday as well. My wife and I started a new tradition yesterday by going on a scooter ride. We cruised the back roads and found a Wildlife Lands area that was open. We cruised around at 5mph checking out the place. It was an awesome dirt road that winded for about 4 miles. It was a gr8 day :D . I hope everyone had an equally gr8 day.

Happy day-after Thanksgiving everyone!

I know I haven't been on here in a while, been super busy at work, and at home, and at school... this time of year is always a little nuts for me.
I opened at 7am at the store this morning, and I have so far had about... 5 customers MAYBE.

Anyway, I spent WAY TOO MUCH time making a wide variety of a new found favorite (and super easy) party/family gathering "dessert", COOKIE BALLS!
Image
So I made like 10 different kinds, with 3 different kinds of chocolate, 4 different kinds of regular cookies, 2 different kinds of gluten free cookies special for my step-sister, in addition to a myriad of other tasty ingredients (peppermint candy, coconut, caramel syrup, toffee, bananas, raspberries, maple syrup, etc etc).

Here is one of the easiest, and plainest, recipes Kraft has on their website, it's pretty simple, and you can go crazy with whatever you want to put in or on them! I also didn't necessarily use all of the Kraft brand nonsense, because there's a locally-owned (mostly) organic grocer here that has the same things that taste better and are just plain "better for you". I did end up having to use "1/3 the fat" Philly Cream Cheese and reduced fat Oreos though, since there was nothing else ANYWHERE, but hey, less calories is less calories.

The best part about these though, you don't need to use the oven!
(I did use the stove to double-boil the chocolate, instead of using the microwave, I don't like microwaves... somehow I always burn things in there!)

So, if any of you feel as though you are inept at food-like creations, but are asked to bring something to share, these are really easy, and generally a really big hit! :D

Growing up mom always made 3-4 pecan pies, 1 pumpkin pie, a lemon meringue (for my sister) and a sweet potato pie (for me).

We had pecan trees in our yard so I grew up eating pecans. Still my favorite.

I wanted to get up really early, ride to a nice, eastern-facing vantage point, have some coffee while watching the sunrise before coming back to finish cooking and cleaning. But I didn't. :)

Yeah, the traditional recipes for mince pie included finely-chopped meat of one form or another (hence "mince"). However, the modern version is a conglomeration of candied fruits, citron, ornage peel, raisins, etc. in a tangy, alcohol-enhanced filling.

BTW: I'm also one of those few people who actually enjoy fruitcake. The more dense, the better.

I made some with golden oreos, coconut, and a wee bit of caramel sauce, dipped in dark chocolate, and boy they were awesome.
