I get Motorcycle Classics magazine and with it comes these emails. This is the first scooter pic they've sent.
Czech-made. Anybody familiar with it?
With what appears to be a chain final drive, I wonder if it's really an underbone motorcycle like a Honda Cub, but with bigger bodywork.

I think you're right; this may be an underbone. It was sold in a slightly less scooter-y version in the '60s (as a Jawa). It had a foot shifter and large wheels—14", much larger than most scooters in the '50s.
Appearance-wise it's very much in line with the Eastern European/German scooters of the time: Zundapp Bella, IWL Berlin, Czeta.

Hay isn't that the proto-type Genuine Scooter 300i??? Just kidding, interesting scooter but don't know what it is. Jawa, you may be on track with that, however. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.

I think there was a "thing" there for a while wherein the MC manufacturers were trying to "scooterize" some of their bikes to cash in on the craze.
A further example:

Very obviously a motorcycle but they tried to add bodywork in the form of what was called the "bathtub". These are kinda rare now because most owners pulled that stuff off and threw it away.

You know, I have also noticed how many modern bikes like the big Harley's and other bikes that are enclosing there bikes and even have covered leg guards. I call them Scooter Want-to-be Bikers.
