I just re-read the OP and wanted to ask: Are you thinking of the Pure Fix with the gearset set to freewheel?

That was one of the options

Based on what I've seen here, it looks to me that your idea of 'resarching' your bicycle purchase has been to solicit the opinions of others, get opinions from people with decades worth of experience, and then argue back against those people with your plans to buy something of the lowest possible quality at the lowest possible dollar price. With a change of mindset, it is possible to pursue a high-quality product for a relatively low price. People who love bicycles would like to help you. Please let the walmart idea go.
Wow, great way to tell me what my intentions are! I NEVER knew what I really meant

I'm comparing ALL options. I just have a problem spending more on a non-motorized machine than it would cost to buy a decent used motorbike, and if the only way I can just get my feet wet in the sport is to buy only certain "quality" brands without actually seeing what the difference is simply by other people telling me what to buy then I'm not doing it.

I have also been looking at several brands listed and still chewing it over as well. But, it's easier to just jump my case because I said an option you don't like.

As I have said before, this is all great info and is pointing me in the right direction, but please don't jump my case if I explore options that you may personally not like.

I hope that your continued research helps you develop a useful perspective on what you're doing and helps you make a good choice.

I accept that just because you keep bringing up the walmart bike doesn't mean that is the action you're going to take.

As strangers or professional philosophers, we could probably talk all day about the relationships of price to value and quality. As consumers, each of us navigates the minefields every day. I have decades of experience in the subject that you asked about here, and I hope you will search your heart for the possibility that I offer my advice, even when I feel compelled to do so somewhat bluntly or emphatically, because I believe I am trying to help.

Thank you for the concise explanation for why you don't listen. I have been there and I understand. I hope that your continued research helps you make a good decision, and I respect that you place a high value on your own decision making.

TL;DR

Translation: "My opinion is best, and if you don't agree with it, I'm going to spout opinion that you're too ignorant or stubborn to agree with my opinion"

Do you get a kick out of being an annoying little troll? Everyone's been VERY helpful here... except you.

Ahem… NO BICKERING PLEASE!

If y'all don't get along or disagree or misread each other's tone and intent or simply dislike each other, just leave it and move along. It's part of being a member of a diverse community.

It's so frustrating when people fail to acknowledge my magnificence. I wish OP the best possible result with whatever choice they make, and the chance to get as much pleasure out of riding as I have. Mistakes, and they have been many, are just as much a part of my learning experience as any victories.

They say mistakes are the only thing that you can truly call your own...

Neo's got a good head on his shoulders, so I'm certain he'll make the best decision available to him under his specific circumstances.

I got a K2 mountain bike when I turned 21, it's held up for the 10 years since, including the summer I worked as a bike messenger in downtown Washington. Most other riders were on fixies, but they were a lot more hardcore then I was, even though I was able to pull 12 hour days non-stop. I replaced the tires with skinnier road tires to make it more bearable. Later on, I bought a fixie from someone on ebay, and gave fixed gear riding a go. Almost killed myself in the process, so I put a freewheel on one side and flipped the rear wheel. Painted it gold a few months later and ended up not riding much at all, so I gave it to my cousin and kept the K2. I recently started doing bike commuting almost half the time since my new apartment is a 6 mile each way, mostly flat, and almost all on exclusive bike paths.

I might try to get that singlespeed back from my cousin or a fold up, like the Dahon Speed P8. That might be another good option for you to fold up and take on the train.
