100 scooter crashes- video

Nobody dies(so they say), there are a few horrific ones though. They should probably show this video in MSF course because the majority of crashes are rider error. Lots of running into poles, not paying attention, driving too aggressive on wet roads...

great vid. at 3:30 a rider falls off a scoot but the scoot keeps going! even makes a turn all by its lonesome

we talk a lot about cagers being silly, but some of these riders are incredibly risky, unskilled, or just plain low on iq. i wonder if some who ride in countries where scooters are more common get a false sense of security because so many are on the road? i say this because i live in the SGV in L.A. and we have a large asian population. several have asked me about my scooter and they say they used to ride but no more. why? traffic and cars is what they say. too dangerous to ride. but some of these scooter dominant locales don't look any safer!

Looks like a 50/50 split between cagers not watching where they are going and scooter dudes not knowing how to ride. We had a couple of spills at Amerivespa in 2009 in Los Gatos but for the most part the riders were seasoned scooter riders and I didn't see anyone taking needless risks. We are no match for a 3000 pound plus car with our 240 pound mounts; I still am cautious when approaching intersections and slow down, just in case my wife is on the road...just kidding about the last part.

I respectfully disagree. I think the best one is a 3:30 (just after the scooter that ditches its rider and peaces out) where the rider takes to the sky and does a grand imitation of a helicopter.

And before anybody calls me mean, I'd think it was great even if it were me. It's pretty epic.

Ouch! It is just plain painful to watch some of these. A lot of folks going down in short sleeve shirts. Many in shorts and sandals. Many with no gloves landing on the palms of their hands on the road. Many helmets flying off - presumably most were not fastened. Many drivers and riders running lights or evidently not even noticing the lights. Like a destruction derby on 2 wheels.

H O L Y C R A P!! agree its a 50/50 split between cars almost running people down and scooterist just jumping into traffic or just t-boning a car. i swear most of them did not even grab the brake or let off of the throttle. crazy vid.

Most of it is indeed rider error and lack of situational awareness. The rider needs to always ride as if he is invisible, not as if he has the right of way even if he does have the right of way.

I was just in Taiwan in November--I didn't see any crashes like these but I was frankly surprised I didn't. It was my first time overseas so I wasn't really sure what to expect--I knew there were a lot of scooters... but I didn't know there would be quite so many with poorly equipped riders (nearly all).

Not wearing gloves, gear, or full-face helmets is just part of the culture over there. I actually played a game while there called "spot the full-face" because the vast, vast majority of scooter riders wore half or three quarter helmets, often with the visor (if they had one) up and no gloves. Many riders with regular jackets worn backwards (left arm through right sleeve, right arm through left) as their only protection from wind and the road below. Among the twelve days I was there and the literally thousands of scooter riders I saw, I spotted less than 10 full face wearers, and two of those were riding motorcycles.

And that's not to mention some of the other craziness I saw, like dogs riding on the floorboards, children standing between the driver and handlebars, or a family of four riding a single scooter (child standing, husband driving, wife wedging a second child between her and her husband). I got a kick out of seeing so many scooters everywhere (and seeing designated parking and scooter-specific traffic zones) but there is just not a culture of safety for riders there.

I kinda like 4:15 mark. The guy with beer on his dash videoing the scooter crashing into him. And it also seems to easy to pick out cheapo Chinese scoots, the ones that exploded into a thousand pieces.

^ i also like the guy at the end on the bicycle. i think he forgot he has no motor! and look closely at how the accident at :23 happens. don't look at the two scooters in the foreground, but the scooter in the background which gets hit. wtf who rides like that!

then he goes careening into the other two taking them down domino effect like. just goes to to show for those two unlucky riders....you never know!

Most of this could have been prevented by taking a motorcycle class. I finish mine tomorrow.

Though I felt OK about riding before, it certainly has taught me a ton, plus, now I know the basics of a motorcycle too.

Most of these people are taking needless risks, not watching for other drivers, sitting in the blind spots of other drivers, or generally being dumb. Especially in the rain and with a passenger! duhh...

gratz skully, aside from having to wear a long sleeved shirt during a texas summer for my MSF.. I really enjoyed/learned alot. I didn't have any long sleeved shirts so i had to borrow my brothers sweater, was awfully hot.

I think taiwan just has a very small skills test, riding slowly in straight line, turning, and maybe stopping. I doubt they have any safety classes, after watching this video.

"NObody dies"? I call bullshit on that one. The original poster put that on there so YouTube doesn't yank the vid. Head on crashes that throw the rider (without helmet) 15 to 20 feet are NOT usually ones you walk away from. There were some definite back breakers and major head trauma ones in that.

That being said

I'm strongly going to use a taxi if I ever find myself in Taiwan.

Well, while I agree that these were for the most part serious crashes, I couldn't help getting a chuckle out of the one at 2:52 (right before the exploding scooter). That guy almost looked like he was break dancing!

Also check out that many of the people were wearing no protective gear at all, or the most worthless of helmets...the skullcap.

I saw a few slides where people were geared up, so they're probably just angry at what they did to their bikes.

Seems like excessive speed on the part of the scooter folk plays a HUGE part in most of the crashes.

I have a friend with one...Yeah I think so....Matt lost his once in a motorcycle crash. Scared everyone to death that didn't know it was designed to come off.

I was thinking the same thing. I didn't watch the whole video- brought back too many thoughts of my own wreck and also got a little old after a while. But a good number of the crashes were due to the rider making quick moves to get around cars, split lanes, etc. I guess the overall point "don't ride like an idiot" is helpful!

Every time I go through there, I see something else I missed....like the scooter seat that departs from the scooter during that one wreck.
