How many folks own a loaner scooter?

So I finally got the Buddy 50 re-registered as a moped. I had it registered as a cycle so I could ride two up but my step-mom is interested in scooters so i told her she could borrow the Buddy to see if she liked it. If she does then I'll just give her the Buddy as I have had a hard time thinking about selling it to a stranger. It was my first scooter and quite honestly I'd rather give it to her so I could still see it and maybe even ride it every once in awhile.

If she doesn't like riding it I'm thinking about keeping it as a loaner for others who are interested in scooters but want to try it out before they buy one. Anyone else have a loaner scooter like this? Anything I should know about insurance, other legalities ect?

Well, I ended up selling my 50cc to a friend who got in a little...uh...trouble.

Before that I offered a few people a ride on it, some taking me up on it. I think its awesome that you are sharing the "scooter love", and Im sure its happens often.

It's not unusual to have a "spare" or "backup" bike. When I was making alot more money, I used to have an automatic and the Stella (first it was a Yamaha Vino 50 as a backup, then I picked up a Vespa GTS250 and the Stella became the backup). It's quite common with vintage riders since you need something to ride while the parts are coming in for the shifter scoot.

And, with full liability for me being $100/year, it's cheap to tag and insure. If I do decide to keep the Rattler once I find another Stella, that's probably what's going to end up happening to it.

I know one couple here in Nashville who went hog-wild on scooters... within 18 months, they went from one scooter to five -- two 125cc 4T, two 50cc 4T and one 50cc 2T.

They loan out their 50s to people curious... and yes, they've made some new scooterists with that strategy. All to the good!

Sounds like my husband and I.

We currently have my 3, his Stella and his Piaggio Fly.

Regarding loaning out your scooter...just make sure they have medical insurance, as (if your motorcycle insurance is like mine) medical is not covered. Or better yet, verify that with your insurance company. Definitely don't take my word for it, as insurance varies state to state.

I have a Zuma as my backup. it's one of hte last years of 2t and even the piaggo shops say they're fantastic, so once I get a new brake lever (damn wind!) I will probably keep it forever, and loan it for rides sometimes to fellow scoot peeps!

I only have the one, and no one but me rides it.

Actually, I'd be happy to let people try it, but the only people who've asked have been the ones I wouldn't even trust with my car.

Considering I still haven't found a buyer for my Honda Met, I s'pose that's my 'loaner/back up' scoot.
There have been times friends have ridden it with me on the Buddy, and when the Buddy was in the shop last June I did ride it to work a couple days. (At that time my commute was 5miles 'into town')

But if you owned two scooters, would you use one as a loaner?

I'm not sure I would loan out anything (scooter-wise) I need back.
