is this a fair price???
i found a buddy 125,2009 at a dealer that has 564miles- it was there demo scooter. sales tax in this county are 8.25% and being that bigger cities are harder to access becuz of the mountains etc around here...things tend to be a bit pricier...not to mention its a tourist town. Anyway, this dealer only had the one buddy 125 and so i asked them if they would sell me THat one. i guess the wait for more buddys is tied up in customs??? so when new one's might arrive was not certain. brand new they would get 3700 they said. Being used,as the demo, they offered it to me for 2980 out the door. this would include all tax, dmv, 2yrwarranty...others i cant recall but basically i can hav it for that price out the door. asked her to throw in a nice 90 helmet and she agreed.(originally i tried offering 2500 and it was denied)-initially i didnt want to spend more than 1500 on ANY scooter-then went up to 2000 limit. this new price seems high to me consdiering what i originally wanted to spend. can anyone tell me if there is a better way to go? or is this my best bet and im i getting a good price??? thanx

its nearly the same OTD price as a "new" one, here. however 2009 "leftovers" are still sold as "new" with zero miles on them. this one is a demo so i think should have a deeper discount then one or two hundred dollars imo. i have seen no miles 2011 125 Bud's priced at barely over $3000 otd with 8% tax and all. some have gotten the new "Psycho" 125's for $3200 plus change otd. so
....imo it is barely fair. get it if you want one. also know this: Genuine is giving away free "bling" packages with the sale of leftover 2009's for some models. if the scooter is sold as NEW. if 125's qualify you may be eligible

I don't think its a very good deal. I just got Fireball, a 2009 125 Buddy with 165 miles on it for $2400 out the door. It was used (previously titled) so I did not get the warranty. I did get a windshield, front and rear storage racks, 2 battery tenders,a green light trigger and a helmet included in that price. Also a rainsuit that was for someone much smaller than me. I was also given the original bill of sale and all the original paperwork

Does Illinois OTD include all the stuff, specifically taxes and registration/titling and plates, that California does?? Factor all that stuff in before comparing.
If I recall from when I lived there for a year, Illinois plates were $$$, too.

3700? Is that after taxes and stuff? That seems high to me. For an older model with miles on it. Would you be getting the manufacturer's warranty? If not, I definitely would not pay that much.
Think about this: The MSRP of a brand new, 0mile, fuel injected Buddy 170 is $3,299 (according to Genuine's website). AND they're supposed to be rolling them out in the International colors...
MSRP for a 125 according to Genuine's site is 2700, NOT 3700. I can understand a couple hundred tacked on for taxes, but NOT a whole grand. Especially under these circumstances. Sounds like a ripoff to me. I think they are trying to make money off of you because it's the ONLY 125 they have and you want it. Don't settle. As a Genuine certified dealer they should be able and willing to call up Genuine and have the color/model you want ordered and shipped there (albeit, there may be a charge to you for the special order).

That does seem like a high price for a scooter with that many miles on it. The only redeeming feature of buying it from the dealer vs. buying it from a private party would be if the warranty still applies. Maybe it does because it's a dealer owned test bike, but I'd double and triple check on that since the warranty is normally non-transferable.
Have you been keeping an eye on Craigslist for used Buddys? If you haven't, I'd suggest hanging tight and watching for one. I'd also suggest being open to going into the Bay Area and bringing one home on a trailer or truck. Renting a U-Haul and buying used in the Bay Area would probably be cheaper than paying a jacked up price in SC. You'd also save some of the licensing fees if you bought used (though I don't recall exactly how that plays out in California - I've been gone from there for a while now).

ok Kelly imo (unqualified) shipping, freight, etc should not come into play. "new" warranty. sold "as new?" fine
but they used it for over 500 miles
i have NO idea what people pay for scoots where you live or from where they buy, but $3700 for a Buddy 125?
maybe four or five years ago
my dealer has them NEW (don't know the year) for around $3000 OTD
just saying. $3700 is not a fair reprensentation of the market most places
the deal you are getting? still fair, considering. BUT, i think over priced by $400, at least
still, its a good scooter, like new, warranty, and it is less then new, if only by a couple hundred dollars
so i say buy it if you want it. or offer $2500 and tell them to call you. bet they do
if you have not bought it already
also, if truly NEW you should qualify for THIS. pretty sweet

Ah! Gomen-nasai! Yep, JH is correct...I'd follow his suggested tactic for seeing if there ain't more wiggle room.kellysmith wrote:dont really kno how to use this forum...response is just above your copy...dint mean or need to include that it is just where i entered in b4 i knew where to properly do so
'Round here, I've gotten used to hardball capitalism and haven't seen dealers willing to cut anybody much of a deal, leftover, demo, or not.
The sad tale about bikes being held captive in a customs shed at the end of a crumbling pier for a year is certainly colorful, but....you know what they say: Buy the Scoot, Not the Story.

i understand asking price. but it is a $2700 scooter. $2600 in '09. i THINK!
the pricing is because its a motorcycle dealer, most likely. they pile on fees
that said, and just for instance a new Buddy 170i with fuel injection is around, oh....$3700-$4000 otd these days
a couple years ago my mom paid $3800 OTD for a special edition Blackjack 150. the 125's? they were $3000 OTD
so is it worth what they are asking. darn it....yes because its a GREAT scooter!
could you get a better price from them if you want? i have a feeling you could

2980 is an okay price OTD. OTD (out-the-door) price means it includes taxes, title and registration fees generally... as in, your dealer should take care of registration and title with DMV for you and you shouldn't have to pay anything else to the DMV- just wait for the vehicle title in the mail and get the plates from somebody.
Get a breakdown of how they came to the 2980. Find what they are charging you for the actual vehicle + plus the taxes and title and registration. According to the Genuine website, 2799 is MSRP for a brand new Buddy 125. This Buddy has miles, but not THAT many miles... it sounds like they knocked off 100 or 200 from MSRP for you, because taxes alone have to be at least that with almost 10% state tax, right?
A $90 helmet is a nice freebie... depending on what kind of helmet it is. Is it a half-helmet? Don't bother. Brain buckets aren't worth a damn. If she's going to throw in a helmet make sure it's one that's actually worth wearing, that will actually protect you (I sound harsh, but I survived a crash that I certainly wouldn't have wearing a half-helmet two months ago)
ALSO
Customs has NOTHING to do with Buddy's. Genuine's HQ is in Chicago. There is no such thing as a Buddy shortage. They probably just don't want to order any more. Why the hell would they charge you freight? Scooter was already there.
AND
Your dealer's wife is COMPLETELY FULL OF SHIT when she tells you that she could get 3700 for one brand new and personally I think you should politely call her on it. Like I said, the only Buddy that could possibly OTD at that price is a brand new, 0mile, 170i... and the MSRP is still 400 dollars less that that- 3299. She may not be trying to swindle you- she may just be the wife of a Ducati dealer and doesn't know dick about scooters.
(Sorry guys... had to say it... wifey sounds like a total ijit...)

Anyways, Kelly, I fully endorse your choice of a Buddy, however, while this deal doesn't sound like a BAD deal, it doesn't sound like a GOOD deal, either.
Here's other things to consider: ask this dealer how many other Buddys they have sold, how often they service them. Their lack of knowledge about Genuine products makes me suspicious that their shop may not best the best place to take them. Do you ride anything else? Have you dealt with the shop or had anything serviced here before? Do you know anybody that has? Is it your only option as far as a dealer/service station if you buy a Genuine bike? Go to the Genuine website and use the dealer locator, see who else is near you- even if they don't have what you want in stock, they may be willing to match this dealer's OTD price and ship it in. Or maybe not, BUT if there's another shop nearby that can service your scoot, you'll know you have options if you become unhappy with this one.
The other problem I have with this lady outright telling you untruths about the MSRP of that Buddy is that she's obviously misinformed about the product and does not care to fix it. How many other things is she misinformed about, and are in your favor or hers? It's just unsettling to me. But I'm spoiled when it comes to shops.
The freight charges and stuff... I remember a thread here months ago about them... I think it's different from state to state whether dealers can charge customers for them or not, so maybe I'm wrong about that, it just seems odd to me. But I know what she said about customs is redonkulous.

i agree with Luna for the most part
i don't want to say the dealer is trying to get over on you. as luna says its not a BAD deal....but not a GOOD one
lets just say it greatly favors the dealer and in this case of a Buddy with 500 miles on it, a '09...it should favor YOU
you can visit the dealer again and let them know of your research and trip here to ModernBuddy
let them know you have been informed of pricing, model years, and what the market is getting for these scooters. tell them no way would they get $3700 for a 125 Buddy today. no way!
you could even buy a used one with 3,000 miles on it for $1800 or so. and that $1200 you saved would fix w/e repair it might need or even get you a whole other scooter!

The free bling ($300 of accessories) offer is through April 15th only, per the Genuine Scooter website (if this scooter, being a loaner sold as new qualifies).JHScoot wrote:Genuine is giving away free "bling" packages with the sale of leftover 2009's for some models. if the scooter is sold as NEW. if 125's qualify you may be eligible
I recently bought a 2009 Buddy 125 and it qualified.
IF the scooter qualifies, this $300 worth of accessories may or may not make the difference between it being a good deal to you.
Just more info for you to think about.

yes i did consider that. makes it more tempting. but the "bling" is supposed to be free. if you want the bling, yes. sweeter deal can be reasoned. but if not? hmm.....michelle_7728 wrote:The free bling ($300 of accessories) offer is through April 15th only, per the Genuine Scooter website (if this scooter, being a loaner sold as new qualifies).JHScoot wrote:Genuine is giving away free "bling" packages with the sale of leftover 2009's for some models. if the scooter is sold as NEW. if 125's qualify you may be eligible
I recently bought a 2009 Buddy 125 and it qualified.
IF the scooter qualifies, this $300 worth of accessories may or may not make the difference between it being a good deal to you.
Just more info for you to think about.
oh good one
$1800

$1700, even

Dealer lady may not be TRYING to be shady... she may just not know her shit, like I said. Either way, she's not conducting good business/giving you good customer service... or a good deal.kellysmith wrote:and maybe im restating sum of this stuff a little off kilter??? swear im TRYING to be rite on key but i COULD be possibly not entirely accurate...dont wanna falsely represent the wrong details that were given to me...leaving this open for 'maybe' errors
And you don't have to tell us the name... me? Doesn't matter I'm on the other coast... everybody else on that coast may be able to figure it out already without you naming it XDD
We have many members over there in Cali. Apparently redhand and I are the East Coast night owls

kelly do you like this sort of thing
http://sfscootercentre.com/?forsale=psy ... ed-edition
uc, that is a special Buddy. MY dealer here in L.A has them for around $3400-3500 otd. others have gotten them for less. and this is a special edition 1 in 174 model. only 174 were made. and they are plated with the number
so do you think that plain 'ol '09 Buddy with over 500 miles is worth just a few hundred $$$ less at $3000? i think maybe not
here is my dealer add
http://www.nohoscooters.com/news/2012/0 ... ddy-psycho
pretty sure he OTD them for just over $3500. but he would most likely do what some other dealers are doing. which is selling for less. and that is no secret among scooter folks
so yes, look around at options IF spending $3000

well if finances are an issue i do think you can find a GREAT used scooter for under $2000. some have been posted here already. feel free to ask about any of them. one or another here will always want to talk scoots with you. its just that sort of community
you don't need to resort to a chinese scooter, however. pretty sure you know that.
i mean i am not bashing them i think they are fine for light duty and even more. IF you are lucky. if not? ugh
so look used, too. Buddys are tough. The Fly 150 is good. but upkeep is pricier. much, i think? its Italian, you see
and those Yamaha Vino's will go on and on and on....

Kellysmith:
There is a Genuine dealer in San Jose, they are located on San Carlos near Bascom.
I would not buy the used one at the Santa Cruz dealership. They are known to be a price gouger...but you are right it is SC after all.
My question for you is are you set on a buddy? Cause I would also suggest a Elite110. I got my Elite at Hollister Honda for $2600 OTD in December of 2010, they should cost even less now. Ask for John or Neal in sales and get a OTD price quote. They'll give you that right over the phone.
I'm in Aptos twice a week and if you want to try out my Elite let me know. You do have a moto license, yes? I commute from San Jose to Aptos on the Elite all the time, 80+ mile round trip. Sometimes I take it on 17 from Los Gatos all the way to Vine Hill when in a crunch for time otherwise I take Summit and Old San Jose/Santa Cruz/Soquel.
edit:
do not buy a chinese scooter!!!!! I've worked on too many and you are just asking for trouble with one. You'll have a very expensive yard ornament if you get one.

If you have patience look for a used one on CL.
I do suggest new riders take the MSF but you can take your DMV test at the Capitola DMV on a scooter and pass it pretty easily. Do some practice on the weekend first. They are the easiest going DMV I have ever been to.
Yes I make that commute all the time on a scoot, rain or shine except when I need to carry something large or if I'm sick. I used to make that same commute on a Honda Metropolitan. So I'm at Cabrillo on Mondays and Wednesdays if you want to try out the Elite. But first at least get your permit.

kelly allow DaBinChe to help you all he can! the guy knows scooters top to bottom. the Elite 110 would be a great choice, and at $2600 OTD a great deal. even if it were a bit more
if i were you (i am not) i would take DaBin up on his offer of meeting you and showing you around his scooter. if you can. you're in good hands
btw you think his commute is long? he rode THIS to Alaska. and back, pretty sure. this is him. hope you don't mind me tooting your horn, dude

now is a good time for me to tell Dabin i think he is freakin' awesome for doing that
